The " Earl Percy's ae daughter" is the heroine in<br />

the ballad of " Johnie Scot."<br />

Is this the duke of Winesberrie,<br />

Or James the <strong>Scottish</strong> King?— p. 82, v. 21.<br />

In all the copies of this ballad, there is great confu-<br />

sion with regard to the titles of the different characters,<br />

particularly of these high potentates. In the versions<br />

<strong>recovered</strong> by the Editor of Johnie Scot, they are vari-<br />

ously termed Duke of York, King of Aulsberry, King<br />

of Spain, <strong>and</strong> Duke of Mulberry. But which of these<br />

is the proper title, it is impossible to determine, <strong>and</strong><br />

is in fact, of little consequence But it may be doub-<br />

ted whether the title of Duke of Winesberrie be
