engine. However, for the purpose of this dissertation, the ones which follow stand out and<br />

proved to be extremely valuable:<br />

The Internet Movie Database: http://www.imdb.com, which is an online <strong>da</strong>tabase of<br />

information related to movies, actors, television shows, production crew personnel, video<br />

games, and most recently, fictional characters featured in visual entertainment media.<br />

Martin’s Film Noir page: http://www.martinsfilm<strong>no</strong>ir.com, which is a site totally<br />

dedicated to film <strong>no</strong>ir and has links to many web articles, images and other <strong>no</strong>ir sites.<br />

JSTOR: http://www.jstor.org is part of ITHAKA, a <strong>no</strong>t-for-profit organization helping<br />

the academic community use digital tech<strong>no</strong>logies to preserve the scholarly record and to<br />

advance research and teaching in sustainable ways and offers multi-disciplinary and<br />

discipline-specific collections that include complete runs of journals as well as select<br />

mo<strong>no</strong>graphs, transactions, etc.<br />

InformaWorldTM: http://www.informaworld.com is a one-stop site hosting journals,<br />

eBooks, abstract <strong>da</strong>tabases and reference works.<br />

The British Film Institute: http://www.bfi.org.uk holds runs of all the important journals<br />

and articles. Its library has the most important collection of books and other materials for<br />

the study of film in the United King<strong>do</strong>m.<br />

“The Dark Room”: http://www.cinepad.com/film<strong>no</strong>ir/<strong>no</strong>ir_intro.htm is an interesting<br />

site created by Jim Emerson which introduces <strong>no</strong>ir ico<strong>no</strong>graphy and also has direct links to<br />

other <strong>no</strong>ir sites.<br />
