Agricultural systems depend on healthy natural ecosystems to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

soil fertility, poll<strong>in</strong>ators, pest <strong>and</strong> disease control.<br />

tourism<br />

Many tourists come to Irel<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> to see <strong>and</strong> enjoy the<br />

ancient <strong>and</strong> green l<strong>and</strong>scapes. <strong>The</strong>y appreciate the rural tranquillity <strong>and</strong><br />

largely unspoilt countryside. Many visitors come specifically for activities<br />

that directly depend on a healthy natural environment such as angl<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

boat<strong>in</strong>g, walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Quality of life<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g like a day cruis<strong>in</strong>g along the Shannon or walk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through Lough Key Forest <strong>and</strong> Activity Park to clear the m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong><br />

relax. Biodiversity plays an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of keep<strong>in</strong>g us healthy both<br />

mentally <strong>and</strong> physically by provid<strong>in</strong>g beautiful <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g places<br />

for recreation.<br />

Many medic<strong>in</strong>es we use everyday (e.g. Aspir<strong>in</strong>), were orig<strong>in</strong>ally derived<br />

from plants. Pharmaceutical companies cont<strong>in</strong>ue to explore wild places<br />

for potential new drugs.<br />

culture<br />

<strong>Nature</strong> <strong>and</strong> wildlife has <strong>in</strong>spired numerous poets, pa<strong>in</strong>ters, composers<br />

<strong>and</strong> authors, such as the <strong>Roscommon</strong> born pa<strong>in</strong>ter Roderic O’Connor,<br />

or the author John McGahern who lived for a time <strong>in</strong> Cootehall.<br />

the couNty crest<br />

<strong>Roscommon</strong>’s County Crest reflects the heritage of<br />

County <strong>Roscommon</strong> <strong>and</strong> how important biodiversity<br />

is to the county. n <strong>The</strong> Blue background st<strong>and</strong>s<br />

for truth <strong>and</strong> loyalty. n <strong>The</strong> Crown st<strong>and</strong>s for<br />

Rathcroghan <strong>and</strong> the association of the O’Conor’s,<br />

K<strong>in</strong>gs of Connacht, with the county. n <strong>The</strong> Gold Cross<br />

st<strong>and</strong>s for the Abbeys <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>, St. Coman <strong>and</strong><br />

the Cross of Cong, which was made for High K<strong>in</strong>g Turlough Mor O’Conor <strong>in</strong><br />

1123. n <strong>The</strong> words ‘Constans Hiberniae Cor’ are lat<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> they mean Irish,<br />

steady, firm, unchang<strong>in</strong>g, constant <strong>and</strong> unwaver<strong>in</strong>g. n <strong>The</strong> Sheep’s head<br />

st<strong>and</strong>s for the long tradition of sheep farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the county. n <strong>The</strong> Oak Leaf<br />

with acorns st<strong>and</strong>s for growth <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous fertility. It also represents<br />

Douglas Hyde, first president of Irel<strong>and</strong>, born <strong>in</strong> Co. <strong>Roscommon</strong>. He wrote<br />

under the pen name of ‘An Croabh<strong>in</strong> Aoibh<strong>in</strong>n’, which means ‘little oak’. n<br />

<strong>The</strong> Green <strong>in</strong> the triangle represents ‘Ros’ mean<strong>in</strong>g wood, from Ros Coma<strong>in</strong><br />

– the Irish name for <strong>Roscommon</strong>, which means the wood of St. Coman.<br />
