actioN for Biodiversity iN couNty roscommoN<br />
County <strong>Roscommon</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> Plan 2012-2016 <strong>in</strong>corporates the County <strong>Roscommon</strong> Biodiversity Action Plan. Biodiversity<br />
actions from the <strong>Heritage</strong> Plan are set out here. <strong>The</strong>se actions have been devised as a result of public consultation carried out<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2007 as part of a process to develop a County <strong>Roscommon</strong> Biodiversity Action Plan. <strong>The</strong>y have also had regard to public<br />
consultation carried out <strong>in</strong> 2009 & 2011 as part of the process to develop the County <strong>Roscommon</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> Plan 2012-2016.<br />
oBjective 1: to collect <strong>and</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>ate heritage <strong>in</strong>formation Notice<br />
To facilitate the development of a comprehensive heritage database for the county, to make this <strong>in</strong>formation available to all.<br />

Encourage school children to get <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> wildlife surveys, such as though the NPWS outreach education programme,<br />
the Green Schools Programme <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>in</strong> Schools Scheme.<br />
Compile a web based database of accessible local wildlife sites <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>, <strong>and</strong> promote via the <strong>Roscommon</strong> County<br />
<strong>Council</strong> ‘Virtual <strong>Roscommon</strong>’ website.<br />

Summarise survey data from recent biodiversity surveys <strong>in</strong> the county <strong>and</strong> make available though <strong>Roscommon</strong> County<br />
<strong>Council</strong> website.<br />
Promote <strong>and</strong> encourage participation wildlife projects <strong>and</strong> surveys, which gather <strong>in</strong>formation on habitats <strong>and</strong> species<br />
throughout the county. Examples <strong>in</strong>clude: Red squirrel sight<strong>in</strong>g records to irishsquirrels@gmail.com or www.biology.ie;<br />

Seek support for the employment of a Biodiversity Officer to co-ord<strong>in</strong>ate implementation of the Biodiversity Action Plan<br />
<strong>and</strong> advise <strong>Roscommon</strong> County <strong>Council</strong> on biodiversity related matters.<br />
Cont<strong>in</strong>ue biodiversity tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for all <strong>Council</strong> staff; <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g planners, eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>and</strong> key personnel; Elected Members &<br />
Boyle Town <strong>Council</strong>.<br />
Organise biodiversity tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g / <strong>in</strong>formation events for community groups, REPS/AEOS participants, l<strong>and</strong>owners <strong>and</strong><br />

Promote regeneration of food sources for wildlife such as the ‘LINNET’ w<strong>in</strong>terfeed scheme through biodiversity events on<br />
<strong>Roscommon</strong> farms.<br />
Promote woodl<strong>and</strong> schemes; such as the ‘Neighbourwood Scheme’ <strong>and</strong> the ‘Native Woodl<strong>and</strong> Scheme’ through open<br />
days <strong>and</strong> other events.<br />
Compile <strong>and</strong> make available a list of sites that show best management practise for range of conservation issues, e.g.<br />
coppice management, hedgerow management, callow management.<br />
Ensure all mechanical hedgerow cutt<strong>in</strong>g carried out by operators who have achieved the Teagasc proficiency st<strong>and</strong>ard MT<br />
1302 – Mechanical Hedge Trimm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Promote a biodiversity friendly policy <strong>in</strong> the management of graveyards, open spaces, verges, dra<strong>in</strong>s, rivers <strong>and</strong> streams;<br />
for example with <strong>Roscommon</strong> County <strong>Council</strong> <strong>and</strong> Rural Social Scheme staff.<br />
Promote the implementation of recommendations from relevant biodiversity research publications, such as ‘County<br />
<strong>Roscommon</strong> Hedgerow Survey Report’, 2005 <strong>and</strong> ‘Hedgerow Translocation – Document<strong>in</strong>g the successful translocation of<br />
a mature hedgerow’, 2007 etc.<br />
Hold demonstration days on farms to show good farm<strong>in</strong>g practice; such as <strong>in</strong> Riparian corridors <strong>and</strong> hedgerow<br />
management.<br />
