Biodiversity is all around us <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>; it is found<br />

<strong>in</strong> the gardens, parks, fields <strong>and</strong> hedgerows on our<br />

doorsteps <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> our neighbourhood, as well as the<br />

very special habitats of national <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

importance <strong>in</strong> protected sites such as woodl<strong>and</strong>s, bogs<br />

<strong>and</strong> turloughs.<br />

In <strong>Roscommon</strong>, biodiversity gives us a county rich<br />

<strong>in</strong> natural heritage <strong>and</strong> resources. Mak<strong>in</strong>g space for<br />

nature <strong>and</strong> wildlife <strong>in</strong> the countryside <strong>and</strong> urban areas<br />

has huge socio-economic <strong>and</strong> environmental benefits<br />

by mak<strong>in</strong>g our towns <strong>and</strong> villages nice places to live,<br />

work <strong>and</strong> do bus<strong>in</strong>ess, ensur<strong>in</strong>g healthy agricultural<br />

<strong>and</strong> forestry ecosystems, improv<strong>in</strong>g our health <strong>and</strong><br />

well-be<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> protect<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>tegrity of our natural<br />

environment. Biodiversity is a wonder to enjoy now,<br />

<strong>and</strong> to protect for future generations.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a huge variety of wildlife habitats <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Roscommon</strong>. Some of the most important sites have<br />

been designated for nature conservation (Appendix<br />

1). Habitats of particular <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>clude bogs, turloughs, eskers, callows, woodl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

lakes <strong>and</strong> rivers. <strong>The</strong>re are also many species of rare<br />

plants <strong>and</strong> animals found <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>. Outside of<br />

the protected sites there are lots of other important<br />

places for nature <strong>and</strong> wildlife <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> both <strong>in</strong><br />

rural areas, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> our towns <strong>and</strong> villages.<br />
