iNvasive species<br />
Invasive species are plants or animals that have<br />
been <strong>in</strong>troduced to Irel<strong>and</strong>, are spread<strong>in</strong>g rapidly,<br />
push<strong>in</strong>g out native species <strong>and</strong>/or alter<strong>in</strong>g natural<br />
ecosystems <strong>and</strong> how they function. <strong>The</strong>re are<br />
several <strong>in</strong>vasive species that are a serious problem<br />
or threat <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong>: zebra mussel, Himalayan<br />
Balsam, Japanese Knotweed, <strong>and</strong> Grey Squirrel.<br />
<strong>The</strong> impact of climate change may exacerbate the<br />
impact of <strong>in</strong>vasive species.<br />

proBlems for Biodiversity<br />
Biodiversity has decl<strong>in</strong>ed globally <strong>in</strong> recent centuries due<br />
to human activity <strong>and</strong> exploitation of resources. <strong>The</strong> price<br />
we pay for not tak<strong>in</strong>g care of our natural environment is<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly high- global warm<strong>in</strong>g, soil erosion,<br />
water pollution, flood<strong>in</strong>g, decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g fish stocks, species<br />
ext<strong>in</strong>ctions, spread of pests <strong>and</strong> diseases etc.<br />
Biodiversity <strong>in</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> is under threat from activities<br />
such as development, dra<strong>in</strong>age, pollution, dump<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>in</strong>vasive species <strong>and</strong> climate change. <strong>The</strong> price we pay for<br />
not protect<strong>in</strong>g our biodiversity, particularly wetl<strong>and</strong>s, has<br />
become <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly obvious <strong>in</strong> recent years <strong>in</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> as<br />
we have had to deal with flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> pollution of dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
water supplies. Wetl<strong>and</strong>s can act like filters, <strong>in</strong>tercept<strong>in</strong>g<br />
nutrients <strong>and</strong> pollutants before they enter waterbodies,<br />
<strong>and</strong> they can act like sponges, hold<strong>in</strong>g water <strong>and</strong> releas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
it slowly. Dra<strong>in</strong>age <strong>and</strong> destruction of wetl<strong>and</strong>s contributed<br />
to a decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> water quality <strong>in</strong> some parts of Irel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a<br />
decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the water-hold<strong>in</strong>g capacity of the l<strong>and</strong>, lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to flood<strong>in</strong>g under high ra<strong>in</strong>fall conditions.<br />
Biodiversity is our natural capital<br />
<strong>and</strong> must be protected so that we<br />
can cont<strong>in</strong>ue to reap its many social,<br />
economic <strong>and</strong> environmental benefits.<br />
