ABOUT US:<br />

The <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Marines</strong> is a youth education and service<br />

program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of<br />

high school, which promotes mental, moral, and physical<br />

development. The program focuses on character<br />

building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free<br />

lifestyle, and from 1993-2010 was the focal point for the<br />

U.S. Marine Corps' Youth Drug Demand Reduction<br />

efforts.

What We Are Not<br />

• Not a recruiting service for<br />

the <strong>Marines</strong>.<br />

• Not a Rambo outfit<br />

– no weapons, warfare or<br />

tactics<br />

• Not a “scared straight”<br />

correctional program.<br />

• Not a baby-sitting service.<br />

• Not couch potatoes.<br />

• Not funded.


REQUIREMENTS<br />

• A copy of a birth certificate is required for all<br />

youth.<br />

• A Social Security Number, INS identification<br />

card, or tax ID number is required for all<br />

youth.<br />

• <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Marines</strong> must have physicals updated<br />

annually.


REQUIREMENTS (cont)<br />

• <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Marines</strong> must be actively enrolled in<br />

public, private, or certified home school and<br />

in good standing (not expelled). Failure to<br />

maintain enrollment in one of the above is<br />

grounds for dismissal from the program.<br />

• Must have never been convicted of a felony<br />

or misdemeanor involving weapons or child<br />

abuse.<br />

• Must follow all YM rules and regulations.


JUST SOME OF THE RULES…..<br />

• Males don’t wear earrings.<br />

• Males have short conservative haircuts.<br />

• No finger nail polish for males…flesh tone for females.<br />

• No eccentric hair styles.<br />

• No bagging/sagging – pants worn at waist with shirts<br />

tucked in.<br />

• Must show respect for YM rank and authority.<br />

• Have to say, “Yes, M’am”…<br />

• Don’t say “yeah.”


JUST SOME MORE OF THE RULES…..<br />

• No profanity.<br />

• Covers (hats) off indoors.<br />

• NO DRUGS OR GANGS.<br />

• Must be registered in, attending, and getting<br />

good grades in school.<br />

• No threatening behavior

Frequently asked questions<br />

• Where do we train?<br />

– Lee bldg., unless otherwise advised.<br />

• When?<br />

– Every other Thursday from 1800-2000 (6-8)<br />

– Every other Saturday from 0830-1430 (8:30-2:30)<br />

• How much does it cost?<br />

– $180…can be divided into 3 payments.<br />

• What do I get for my money?<br />

– Most of the regular and PT uniform, guidebook,<br />

newsletter, patches as well as annual dues, insurance.


FAQ’s cont.<br />

• Is there a limit on the number of recruits accepted<br />

into Boot Camp?<br />

– Yes, 40 is the maximum<br />

• When does Boot Camp 2013 start?<br />

– Saturday January 5 th , 2013<br />

• Do we need a physical?<br />

– Yes, a recent (within last 6 months) school sports<br />

physical will do, but our paperwork must be filled out.<br />

• Are staff members paid?<br />

– No, the staff is 100% volunteer.


FAQs cont.<br />

• Do I have to attend all the trainings?<br />

– Recruits are allowed not more than 3 excused<br />

absences during Boot Camp.<br />

– <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Marines</strong> must notify staff in advance to<br />

be excused.<br />

– Multiple unexcused absences may result in<br />

being dropped from the program.<br />

– Leaves of absence--Available for <strong>Young</strong><br />

<strong>Marines</strong> only for athletic or school activity<br />

reasons...must be requested in writing and<br />

approved by Unit Commander.

• Are there mandatory events?<br />

– Attendance at every event is strongly<br />

encouraged but there are 5 that are mandatory<br />

for all <strong>Young</strong> <strong>Marines</strong> and Recruits.<br />

• Graduation<br />

• Spring Car Wash<br />

• Memorial Day<br />

• Fall Fundraiser<br />

• Veterans Day<br />

– Missing a mandatory event may exclude you<br />

from a fun activity like camping, or hinder<br />

promotions, etc.


I’ve got my packet, now what?<br />

• Fill out the packet COMPLETELY, and don’t<br />

forget a copy of your child’s birth certificate.<br />

Failure to do so means your packet won’t be accepted.<br />

• Enclose a check for $180. ($60 if choosing to<br />

make 3 payments.) Make it out to CRYM<br />

• Mail it to the address on the envelope or<br />

• Turn it in at any scheduled training.<br />

• Check the calendar page at www.crym.org<br />

to verify training schedule and location.<br />

• All packets must be postmarked by Saturday,<br />

December 15th.


What do I need to provide?<br />

• Plain white t-shirt with last name written in black<br />

2” letters on back.<br />

• Running shoes with white socks.<br />

• Any color sweatpants (these will be replaced by<br />

unit gear when they come in.)<br />

• Lunch for Saturday trainings.<br />

• Pen or pencil.<br />

• Recruits and their parents provide the boots<br />

(unit can order them for you at $20 per pair.)


How do I become a<br />

<strong>Young</strong> Marine??<br />

• Attend and graduate from Boot Camp.<br />

– Approximately 3 months of training, every other<br />

Thursday and every other Saturday.<br />

– Learn Drug Demand Reduction, YM Obligation,<br />

YM history, basic drill, physical training, teamwork,<br />

military jargon, etc.<br />

– Must successfully complete all prescribed enabling<br />

objectives, must pass a physical fitness test and must<br />

pass basic drill performance in order to graduate.<br />

– Keep a positive, motivated attitude and work hard.


I did my best, but...<br />

• I didn’t pass one of the tests or didn’t<br />

complete all enabling objectives…..<br />

Do I have to quit?<br />

– No, you are still a member of the <strong>Young</strong><br />

Marine family.<br />

– You will stay in a Recruit status until you pass<br />

the tests and claim the title.<br />

– There may be some encampments or details<br />

where Recruits are not able to participate.
