HMOS COMPRISING SELF CONTAINED FLATS<br />

APPLICATION OF THIS STANDARD<br />

This standard applies <strong>to</strong> houses wholly or partly converted <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> self-conta<strong>in</strong>ed flats. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual units are self-conta<strong>in</strong>ed, where amenities i.e. WCs, wash<strong>in</strong>g and cook<strong>in</strong>g<br />

facilities are exclusive <strong>to</strong> the occupiers of the flat. The occupiers form a s<strong>in</strong>gle household.<br />

<strong>Flats</strong> comprise more than one room accessed off a lobby or entrance hallway that is<br />

exclusive <strong>to</strong> the unit.<br />

Table 1 states the maximum number of occupiers, irrespective of age, who may sleep <strong>in</strong><br />

any sleep<strong>in</strong>g room when tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> account the number of sleep<strong>in</strong>g rooms available.<br />

Table 2 states the maximum number of occupiers, irrespective of age, who may sleep <strong>in</strong> a<br />

bedroom depend<strong>in</strong>g on its size.<br />

In calculat<strong>in</strong>g the maximum number of occupiers for any flat, both Table 1 and Table 2<br />

need <strong>to</strong> be applied. For example, where there is 1 bedroom with<strong>in</strong> the lett<strong>in</strong>g, the<br />

maximum number is 2 (us<strong>in</strong>g Table 1), but for 2 occupiers <strong>to</strong> sleep <strong>in</strong> that bedroom it must<br />

be at least 9.5m 2 <strong>in</strong> size.<br />
