DRESS AND GROOMING POLICY
2012-2013
The purpose of a school uniform policy is to encourage students to focus on the learning
process without the distractions of unsuitable dress and grooming. Personal appearance shall not
detract from the educational process. Students shall maintain an orderly and clean appearance at all
times. When a student’s appearance at school becomes a disruptive factor, a safety hazard, or a
health concern, the administration will take the appropriate steps to correct and remedy the situation.
The minimum acceptable standards for student dress and grooming to be interpreted and enforced by
the principal or designees at Veterans Park Academy for the Arts are:
A. Tops: All polo or button-up shirts must have a collar and be solid red, white, navy blue, or
hunter green (no logos).
B. All shirts must be properly fitted and be tucked in at the waist throughout the school day. If
students wear a t-shirt underneath their shirt, it must be white or the color of the shirt being
worn.
C. Shirts shall be appropriately fastened. The length of the shirt must be long enough to be tucked
in properly. When the student raises both hands over his/her head, midriffs should not be
visible at any time.
D. Bottoms: Shorts, long pants, skirts, skorts, capri pants or jumpers must be navy blue or khaki.
E. All bottoms must be properly fitted (tight clothing is not permitted). Shorts, skorts, skirts, and
jumpers must fall no higher than 3 inches above the knee.
F. All bottoms must be worn at the waist with a school approved belt at all times. If the bottoms
don’t have belt loops, a belt is not required.
G. Denim, spandex, sweatpants, pants made of stretchy material or cargo pants/shorts are not
permitted.
H. Students may not wear navy blue tops and navy blue bottoms together.
I. Belts: If bottoms have belt loops, a properly fitted belt must be worn at all times. Belts must be
either leather or canvas and can be black, brown, navy blue or tan. The belt must be plain and
free from studs, spikes, or other decorative embellishments. When fastened, canvas belts must
fit and be secured by the belt loops (not hanging).
J. The buckle of the belt must be simple and free from symbols, logos, or other adornments. (plain
belt buckle)
K. Jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts must be a solid color (red, white, navy blue, or hunter
green). All jackets with hoods must have zippers. The hoods of the jackets, inside and out, must
be the same color as the jacket and cannot have faux fur, decorations, etc.

L. Jackets are not to be used to cover dress code violations. Jackets must be worn unzipped on
campus at all times.
M. Hooded pullover “hoody” sweatshirts are not permitted.
N. Hair color should be the student’s natural color. Hair should not be dyed or colored in any way.
This includes highlighting, extensions, etc. Any hair accessories (bows, ribbons, etc.) must not be
larger than 3 inches.
O. MOHAWKS, extreme spiked hair, edging, or designs cut into hair are considered a distraction
and, therefore, not permitted. EYEBROWS must not be edged, shaved, or designed in any
manner.
P. Shoes: shoes must be closed toe and closed heel. No high heels, flip flops, crocs, boots, or
bedroom slippers.
Q. Socks must be predominantly white, black, blue, or brown and must be worn below the calf.
Socks must be worn with shoes at all times.
R. Cosmetics: make-up must not be excessive to the point where it becomes a disruptive factor.
For example; no black or neon colored nail polish.
S. Writing on the body, tattoos, and body stickers are not permitted.
T. Jewelry-students may wear one necklace. All chains may be no longer than 20 inches in length
and be worn inside of shirts at all times. Chokers, dog collars, spikes, or chain wallets are not
permitted.
U. Students may wear one ring per hand, and one bracelet per wrist. Gel bracelets and silly bands
are not permitted.
V. Earrings are limited to one pair of hoops if double pierced, and all earrings must be smaller than
a quarter.
W. Adornments that are attached to exposed body parts other than the ears are not permitted. (For
example: an adornment attached to the tongue, lip, and nose is not permitted.)
Sweatbands and bandanas may not be worn anywhere on the body at any time.
Performance groups will be given the opportunity to purchase a shirt to wear.
Students are encouraged to wear their grade level/ team shirts on Fridays.
In the event students are allowed to be out of school uniform, Lee County Public Schools dress
code must be followed.
Any infraction of the dress and grooming policy, which the teacher or administration feels
disrupts the flow of education, will be addressed. Should a student choose to dress or groom
inappropriately according to the school’s dress and grooming code, he/she will be placed in the
ISS (in school suspension) room until the parent comes to the school to correct the situation.
After repeated dress or grooming code violations, the student will be considered insubordinate.
