It seems that Spring has a special meaning
for all of us this year. But even as we
turn to new beginnings, there are those
of us who cherish the past. Historians
would say that we must know what
went before if we are to understand the
present, and that is certainly true. But for
collectors, there is a simpler rationale. It
is nostalgia for a gentler time. Enjoy
Dollmaster's Wonderland,
and collectibles celebrating
yesterday's gentler childhood.
For collectors, by collectors. ♥
Dollmasters is delighted to
introduce a family of fanciful
miniature mice, handcrafted
in the USA by the Petersen
family since 1972. Annette
Petersen crafted her first little
mouse nearly four decades
ago, and today is joined in the
wee mouse world by Annette,
Willy and Donna, the next
generation of Petersens. They
describe their creative process
this way. "We make the mold,
cast it, and a little mouse
begins to emerge. Meticulous
hand-painting and an
enormous amount of patience
and time brings each sculpture
to life". All of the Wee Forest
Utilizing the Scottish highland
folktales of his maternal ancestry,
a then unknown Canadian artist
named Palmer Cox created a
group of playful sprites known as
the Brownies and he introduced
them to the world in February of
1883 in a children’s periodical,
St. Nicholas Magazine. Like the
greats, Rose O’Neill and Johnny
Gruelle, Palmer Cox filled his
world with a wide array of fanciful
characters, and like those greats,
Palmer Cox now finds his works
immortalized by the contemporary
great R John Wright.
Each Brownie is an entirely
Why are salt and pepper shakers so collectible?
Is that they come in pairs? Is the diversity of
designs of those pairs? Or is it that after centuries
of use, modern society has yet to divine a new and
better way to dispense salt and pepper? Or, judging
by some of our salt-and-pepper shakers, it’s that
The most beloved dolls were never purchased
with cash. Their cost was merely some sewing
supplies and a few hours of work, and their
price was merely a smile and a "thank you." No
contemporary company captures the American
tradition of home made cloth dolls like Gail
Wilson Designs, where you are the artist. You
are both the mother and the child. You make
An extraordinary feat
of cartography, first
published by Etienne
Turgot in 1739, the
Paris map is one of
the most decorative
and celebrated maps
ever made. Every street and building of the
pre-Hausmann era is shown. Not a window, chimneypiece
or turret has been omitted. Today’s Parisian
suburbs were yesterday’s orchards. Windmills dotted
the landscape. Its creation was a Herculean project
that took over five years to complete. Turgot’s
Plan de Paris (in 3 wall scrolls on fabric, or as a 25
sheet art paper portfolio) is a remarkable technical
achievement, a flight of the imagination created
many years before the first manned balloon flight
and the invention of photography. The map is
available in two ways: three museum-quality-fabric
scrolls with wood beams or as a 25 sheet art paper
a family
of fanciful
miniature
mice,
handcrafted
in the USA by
the Petersen
family since 1972. Annette Petersen crafted
her first little mouse nearly four decades
ago, and today is joined in the wee mouse
world by Annette, Willy and Donna, the next
generation of Petersens. They describe their
creative process this way. "We make the mold,
cast it, and a little mouse begins to emerge.
Meticulous hand-painting and an enormous
amount of patience and time brings each
sculpture to life". All of the Wee Forest Folks
are hand-crafted entirely in the small town of
Carlisle in eastern Massachusetts.
What are the Flower Fairies? They are
small fairies born when a seed sprouts
and tasked with safeguarding their chosen
flower through its life. Their existence was
first chronicled by Cicely Mary Barker in
literary form in the 1920s, and only, recently
renowned, the American artist R. John
Wright has begun to portray them in his
chosen medium of felt. Each hand-made R.
John Wright Flower Fairy is a signed limited
edition and each holds a hand-made felt
example of their flower as well.
Rose Fairy. 10". SD-1263. $790. ♥
The Auction of De Kleine Wereld Doll
and Dollhouse Museum of
Lier, Belgium
An exceptional collection, considered one of the finest private small museums of
childhood ephemera in the world, featuring beautiful dolls, rare dollhouses, stores,
kitchens, and finest quality maitrise furnishings from the 19th century. "We wanted
to build a world for dolls, and then invite some dolls to come and live there", is
how the museum founders, Els Van Houtven and Lena de Swert described their
concept. The result was a remarkable environment in which dolls seem
alive as they are posed choosing a costume for the ball, preparing the
banquet table, decorating the house for Christmas, walking the dog
in the park. As well as creating the world of the 15"-20" poupée (of
which many examples are highlights of the auction) the museum also
featured a wonderful selection of even smaller worlds - doll rooms,
doll houses, stores and kitchens. Of particular note is an early
Christian Hacker millinery shop with connection to the Parisian
fashion journal, Les Modes Parisienne, as well as a remarkable
Chinese Tea Shop, three well-laden miniature toy shops, butcher
shops, mouth-watering bakeries and candy shops, and more. Each
house and shop is in its original unrestored condition, so sought by
collectors, and with all contents intact as they appeared in the museum. The 164
page full-color catalog is available for $59 including after-sale prices realized.
