Why protect a bog?
A bog is a kind of wetland. A wetland is land
that is inundated or water-logged for a long
enough period of time to inuence the soil and
vegetation as well as encourage aquatic life.
If forests can be considered the lungs of the
earth, then wetlands are surely its kidneys.
Wetlands purify rain and runo water before
it reaches groundwater sources.
Wetlands also protect neighbouring land.
ey store excess water from rain and
melting snow thereby reducing ooding and
erosion damage.
Bogs, in particular, are characterized by
an accumulation of partially decomposed
organic matter called « peat ». is soil is
water-logged, acidic and quite nutrient poor.
Plants growing in the bog are adapted to this
harsh environment. Oen, bog plants are
rare because they can only grow in bogs.
