This species was <strong>for</strong>merly widespread and common throughout <strong>the</strong> lowlands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> south and<br />

east <strong>of</strong> England. It has declined since 1950 due to pastures being ploughed and <strong>the</strong><br />

remainder being managed more intensively. The distribution <strong>of</strong> this species in many counties,<br />

including <strong>Huntingdonshire</strong>, is now limited to nature reserves and o<strong>the</strong>r sites specifically<br />

managed <strong>for</strong> nature conservation (Stewart et al. 1994).<br />

At Woodwalton Fen <strong>the</strong> niche <strong>for</strong> this species appears to be maintained by cattle grazing<br />

(Wells, 2003). The only o<strong>the</strong>r site it was known from was Holme Fen, where it was last<br />

recorded in 1898.<br />
