4.2.3 Community involvement<br />

In recent years <strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong> has benefitted<br />

considerably from volunteers contributing many<br />

hours and helping with a wide range <strong>of</strong> projects.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> projects that volunteers undertake<br />

would not o<strong>the</strong>rwise be possible.<br />

The <strong>Beeches</strong> is highly valued by local residents;<br />

it is important that it is considered a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

local community as this fosters better<br />

appreciation and care. Regular consultation with<br />

<strong>the</strong> community ensures people are well<br />

informed about key issues.<br />

Target: support at least 5,000 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

volunteer work per year.<br />

Achieved by:<br />

s promoting volunteer activities;<br />

s holding regular work parties;<br />

s encouraging work experience students;<br />

s producing and publicising a list <strong>of</strong> ‘ jobs<br />

s vacant’ for volunteers;<br />

s holding community events;<br />

s implementing <strong>the</strong> volunteer strategy.<br />

Target: ensure at least one activity per<br />

month is relevant and attractive to <strong>the</strong><br />

teenage age group.<br />

Achieved by: involving groups such as Skill<br />

Force, Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, Scouts and Eagle<br />

Scouts.<br />

s taking opportunities to publicise issues<br />

relevant to <strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong> at local<br />

events such as Parish Council meetings;<br />

s creating opportunities for <strong>the</strong> public to<br />

meet staff and learn about <strong>the</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong>.<br />

Strategy (BBTS)<br />

Produced in conjunction “Exploring <strong>the</strong><br />

with Buckinghamshire roads and paths<br />

County Council (BCC), now free from cars”<br />

<strong>the</strong> transportation plan 2009 public consultation<br />

aims to encourage<br />

sustainable travel to<br />

<strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong>, reduce<br />

<strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> traffic on<br />

roads through <strong>the</strong> reserve<br />

and to facilitate <strong>the</strong><br />

expansion <strong>of</strong> conservation<br />

grazing scheme.<br />

Target: minimise <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> cars and<br />

motor vehicles on <strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong>.<br />

Achieved by:<br />

s continuing to work with BCC regarding<br />

transportation to deliver <strong>the</strong> BBTS Action<br />

<strong>Plan</strong>;<br />

s reviewing and, where necessary, revising<br />

both Strategy and Action <strong>Plan</strong>;<br />

s ensuring that conservation grazing issues<br />

are fully reflected within <strong>the</strong> Strategy and<br />

Action <strong>Plan</strong>;<br />

s ensuring <strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong> is included in<br />

Local Transport <strong>Plan</strong> v3;<br />

s reviewing car access including car park<br />

surfaces, drainage and capacity.<br />
