<strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> open spaces, parks and gardens in and around <strong>London</strong>,<br />

owned by <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong> Corporation as part <strong>of</strong> its commitment to sustaining a world class city.<br />

Each open space is a unique resource, managed for <strong>the</strong> use and enjoyment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public and for <strong>the</strong><br />

conservation <strong>of</strong> wildlife and historic landscape.<br />

2009 public consultation<br />

agencies, local authorities, conservation experts,<br />

local groups and site visitors. We have received<br />

a high level <strong>of</strong> support for all aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plan.<br />

<strong>the</strong> city at <strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong><br />

A team <strong>of</strong> Rangers, based at <strong>Burnham</strong> <strong>Beeches</strong>,<br />

works with volunteers and contractors to protect<br />

and maintain <strong>the</strong> important features <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnham</strong><br />

<strong>Beeches</strong> and Stoke Common for people and<br />

wildlife.<br />

A separate management plan is available for<br />

Stoke Common.<br />

A Legal Duty to Manage<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong>’s open spaces are<br />

protected under <strong>the</strong>ir own Acts <strong>of</strong><br />

Parliament, brought in to acquire land for<br />

<strong>the</strong> recreation and enjoyment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

public and to protect <strong>the</strong>m from<br />

development and enclosure by<br />

maintaining <strong>the</strong>ir natural aspect.<br />

As a public body managing open spaces,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong> is required by law to<br />

comply with certain duties relating to<br />

conservation as set out in section 28G <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981, as<br />

amended) and <strong>the</strong> Natural Environment<br />

and Rural Communities Act (2006). These<br />

require <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong> to take reasonable<br />

measures to fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> conservation<br />

and enhancement <strong>of</strong> its open spaces.<br />
