G.A.P. Year Post Matriculation Programme
Ocean Sailing Adele Botes
With great excitement and anticipation
the Posties woke up early on Monday
morning for a great new adventure -
ocean sailing! The short bus ride to
Durban harbour seemed to take
forever because all the Posties wanted
to do was start the new course! When
we arrived at the Offshore Sailing
Academy we were welcomed with tea
and coffee. We didn’t even have time
to settle in, because our lectures started as soon as
we got there. The lectures focussed on the rules of
the boat, how to work with the lines, identifying the
different parts of the boat and how to tie knots.
Once we grasped all the rules and basics we
immediately got on to our sailing boats and conquered
the ocean. It was a great experience for all, because
we even saw wild marine life, like dolphins, mantel
rays and sharks. Although nobody wanted to return to
the harbour after the fantastic practice run, we had to
prepare for the Toastmasters course in the evenings.
The toastmasters’ class was really enjoyable and time
flew by, because there were so many new things to
learn. We now know how to do a proper handshake
and how to listen with great interest! Jayne, our
lecturer for toastmasters, was really pleased to see that we are not shy when it comes to talking in
front of a crowd! We are looking forward to our next session with Jayne this week. Unfortunately the
week had to come to an end, but it was a pleasurable week for all. On our last day every Postie
received a certificate of competency to sail a boat. This adventure is surely one of many we will
never forget.

PREP
Inter House Athletics
Our Inter-House Athletics was held on Thursday 23rd August.
Despite having our training programme disrupted by the snow, some fine performances were
recorded.
This was the first year that we awarded a Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum. These were won by
Barrie Ferreira and Jenna Egberink, pictured left and right below.
Senior Victor and Victrix Ludorum was won by
Juan Muller and Bopelo Seoe, pictured below
with Mr Chaperon.
Judson made a complete
sweep, winning both the
Relay and being the house
that won the Sports Day
Trophy.
The only record of the day
was in the Foundation
Phase where Taigh Janse
Van Rensburg broke the
80m record.
Well done Judson on the
fine performance by all
your athletes.

COLLEGE
College Music
A number of music pupils took part in the Eisteddfod that was held in Pietermaritzburg and
organised by the SASMT(South African Society of Music Teachers). Treverton was well
represented in the piano, recorder, voice and instrumental(guitar) categories and a number of our
learners did very well, obtaining A-, A or A+. In the voice category Sne Gumede, Caira Claassen,
Nothando Mazibuko and Emily Stein received and A-, Tutu Zondo and Stefano Raciti (guitar) and
Iviwe Dabula received an A and Reitumtsi Magongoa an A+.
Darren Usher-Jones received an A- for all of his pieces and Shane Geldart also received an A-.
Stefano Raciti got two A's and an A- for
his classical guitar. Julia Guthrie and
Tessa Vujovic sang a duet and played the
guitar and received an A.
Iviwe Dabula received an A for his
recorder solo and Sone van Zuydam an
A+ for a recital, playing all three of her Gr
8 pieces.
Sone and Reitumetsi were chosen to
perform at the Best of the Eisteddfod
Concert in the Tatum Art Gallery. They
have done us proud with brilliant
performances of a recorder concerto by
Sammartini and Gershwin's Summertime
(voice).
Well done to all our musicians,
especially Sone and
Reitumetsi, pictured right with
Mrs Stiller.
A group of Gr 8 learners showed their support of Reitumetsi and Sone (far left) and attended
the concert in the Tatum. They are standing at an art work by one of our parents,

Girls Soccer Inter-District Tournament
For most it was half-term break this past weekend, but for a chosen few Treverton ladies, it was the
Girls Soccer Inter-District Tournament! The regional Trials had been held at Treverton on the 31st of
July.
Congratulations to the following Girls who were selected for the respective Midlands Soccer
teams.
U19 -
Sabrina Miles, Minenhle Mnyandu, Londeka Mchunu, Cloudia Howe, Bali Phasha
U17 -
Tess Miles, Tess Hartslief, Tessa Rouillard, Elizabeth Pappas, Sne Gumede, Megan Blades
U15 -
Thembeni Mlotja-Mthethwa, Megan Weavill, Ayanda Tshuma
On Sunday the 26th of August these girls represented the Midlands Soccer team at the Inter-District
soccer tournament. They started at 8am and played 4 fixtures throughout the day against other KZN
districts. The girls performed exceptionally, not only with their skill, but were an asset to the school
as ambassadors for Treverton through their behaviour and enthusiasm.
Congratulations to the girls and we look forward to hearing the results of the tournament as it
doubles as the KZN girls soccer trials.

2012 Inter House Athletics winners

Congratulations Campbell House – winners of the 2012
Interhouse Athletics trophy.
House captains, Michael Fischer and Sabrina Miles collect the trophy
from Justine Palfarman, Guest of Honour. Justine represented the
South African Youth team at the World Junior Championships in
Singapore in 2010. She represented South Africa at the Junior
Olympics in 2012, breaking the South African record for the 400m in a
time of 51.87s, obtaining 5 th place in the world. She recently spent 10
days in Jamaica training with Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake (the top 2
sprinters in the world, who recently placed 1 st and 2 nd at the 2012
Olympics).

Grade 9 Trash Fashion Bash
The Grade 9’s put together a fantastic display of ‘trash fashion’. A wide range of waste
and recyclable materials were used to create amazing outfits. They were judged on the
durability of the outfits, use of trash and the design of the outfit.

Dancing
Joanne Warren's Dance Studio
will be having their dance concert at Treverton College
on Friday 7th Sept at 7pm.
Joanne's girls will be performing a variety of Modern and Tap numbers.
Midlands Academy of Dance
will also be participating and will be performing their ballet numbers.

All Gauteng Parents - Request from outgoing Chairlady
Please can I call on all Gauteng parents – Prep or College, to consider putting
themselves forward for nomination onto our committee. We are a small dedicated group
of parents based in the North of Johannesburg. I have served on the TGPA for the past 9
years and have really enjoyed it and remained friends with many fellow parents even after
their children have left Treverton. We primarily act as a voice for Gauteng parents to
maintain an open line of communication with the school and we meet informally every
2nd month to raise funds as well. I urge you to get involved and make a difference at
Treverton and in your children’s lives too. Our AGM is on the 22nd October 2012 @ 147
Boundary Lane, Sandhurst at 18h30 sharp. Please attend and come and meet other likeminded
