PREP
Prep Boarding
On Saturday the boarders had a 'make-up and hair' day. They collected old make-up and
then had great fun beautifying one another and enjoyed competing for the best look - Abigail
Reeves featured as the winner!

Inter Prep Athletics
Schools including Cowan House,
Clifton, Wembley, St Gregorys,
Winterton, HCA, Hamilton Prep, St
Mary’s, Lynford and Treverton took
part in the Inter-Prep athletics day
held at the Prep on Friday. It was a
busy afternoon with a high level of
competition and our Prep Athletes
making us proud!

Hockey
Gr 1 & 2 Boys vs Winterton (Coach: Mr M Chaperon)
Our boys took part in matches against Winterton’s Grade 1 and 2 boys on Tuesday afternoon at
the Winterton Sports club. Each of our teams played 4 games against a different group of boys
from Winterton and stood their ground very admirably. Both teams recorded results of 1 win
and 3 draws. The level of commitment to the game and improved teamwork and individual skill
was evident throughout the afternoon’s fixtures. I would like to thank the faithful band of
parents who travel with us to fixtures and lend their support from the sidelines. There is
no doubt that the boys take great encouragement from their moms and dads being there.
U10 Boys Festival (Coach: Mrs M Pieterse)
On Saturday, the U/10 hockey boys played in a festival at A B Jackson Astro in
Pietermaritzburg. They played in the A pool and again did Treverton proud. They played four
matches, winning 3 against Athlone A (3-0), Laddsworth A (3-0) and Bisley A (4-0).
Unfortunately they fell asleep a little in their third game against a physically strong Scottsville A
team who beat them 2-0.
Well done to all the boys on their great level of hockey. The boys were complimented by a
number of people on their skill and their manners.
U11 vs Laddsworth & Underberg (Coach: Mrs A Msimango)
On Saturday, the U11 girls played 2 matches at Treverton. Our first match we played against a
very strong Laddsworth team. We fought hard to protect our goals but they sneaked past with
three quick goals and we lost that game 3 - 1. Our second game was against Underberg and
with great sportsmanship, we drew the game 3 - 3. It was a hard game and both teams were
very evenly matched. Well done to the girls and we look forward to the rest of the season.
U13 Treverton Festival (Coach: Mr M Schulze)
Our Treverton hockey festival this last Saturday went off beautifully. Our U13A team played 5
matches, won 4 of them and lost 1. The last match was particularly satisfying as we only
scored right at the death to win 1-0 against a strong Laddsworth team. Great hockey, chaps!
Prep Tennis (Coach: Mrs C Elliot)
On Thursday afternoon last week our boys team played against Clarendon at Treverton. This
was the first time that Clarendon had entered the league, and our boys did very well. They won
the match decisively and then went on to play a social match afterwards. Well done to
our
boys.
Soccer
U9 Girls Soccer Festival (Coach: Mrs G Palmer)
The U9 girls played soccer in a triangular on Saturday on the Jeff Fetting Oval. We played
Laddsworth first. We played really well and had many chances going wide, however, managed
to put a goal in, in the dying seconds of the game. We won that one 1-0. We then played
Underberg and managed to put 2 goals past them. We won that game 2-0. Well done to the
girls. A good start to the season.

College Equestrian report by Roxanne Hanson
Two week ends ago, Laura Allardyce competed in the Sappi Derby at Shongweni. She placed
5th in the speed accumulator, and third in the Sappi 2012 Derby Championship on My boy Sting
with four clear rounds on Real Cool.
This past week end Emily Yeo and her horse Samson competed at Canterbury. She won her
1m class thus giving her enough qualifying points to compete in CA.
Julia Tiffin and Rivervales Always Romantic travelled to Johannesburg this week end to
compete in The Northern Farms Eventing Champs. She placed third in the 90cm class, giving
her points to go to 1m.
Congratulations to all our riders on these great results!
COLLEGE
Capital Climb
Five learners tackled the very steep Capital Climb 15km in Pietermaritzburg last Saturday.
Running against a very strong wind up to World's View was no easy task but our runners
enjoyed the challenge and some of them even came in skipping and smiling (Kelly and
Jonathan). For most of them it was their first 15km race. Our younger runners did us proud with
their achievements.
Christopher Bartlett
(Gr 9) finished in an
excellent time of
1h28 and Benjamin
Stiller(Gr 8) finished
in 1h34. Sam Arnell
ran well under two
hours and Kelly
Cosgrove and
Jonathan finished
the race
comfortably. Well
done to our runners!
Tennis
U15 Boys vs College (Coach: Dr K Matchett)
The boys U15 A and B tennis teams played against College B and C teams respectively on
Tuesday the 14 August. Both teams played hard and tried their best but lost their matches.
Soccer
1st team Girls vs St Annes (Coach: Mr J Hyam)
On Thursday the 16th of August The Treverton 1st team Girls soccer took on St Annes 1st team
soccer. The game started with a bang as the Treverton girls put loads of pressure on the St
Annes girls, but a few shots on goal went wide. Eventually the girls radar locked onto the target
and the Treverton girls scored 2 goals before half-time, firstly through Londeka Mchunu, and
then through Elizabeth Pappas. The second have saw more of the same as the Treverton girls
pushed hard and created opportunities, unfortunately many shots going wide.
The fate of the St Annes girls was sealed with 15 minutes to play as Sne Gumede finished of
a great move by scoring with a powerful shot to help the Trevrton girls to a 3-0 win.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Pappas for being player of the game, and to the team for remaining
unbeaten thus far this season.
RUGBY REPORT 2012
2012 has been another good year for Treverton rugby. I quote one of the players from the 1st
XV team dinner: “Sir, we came into the team this year as boys and we left as men.” The Sharks
had a 60% win rate to make the quarter finals in the Super rugby playoffs – our boys had a 58%
win rate and came out as one of the top co-ed rugby sides in KZN.
Front row forwards in rugby are not known for their intelligence and during a Geography lesson
one of the props was asked to name the 2 of the 4 seasons to which he replied “ the rugby and
the cricket season”! Our front-row was actually very young (and intelligent) this year and really
stepped up to the plate as we moved sides backwards in the field. This year is the first in living
memory that we have managed to beat Weston twice in a row – so Grade 11s no pressure for
2013!
52 Games were played by all the teams in the season of which 26 were won and 24 lost.
Thus % wins was 50%. This is a great achievement considering that 8/9 opposition
schools are much bigger than us.
The problem with handing out awards is that because there are 15 men in a team you run the
risk of overlooking someone. We have tried to be fair in our assessment of player skills and their
contribution to the team. Mr Steve Whitfield
Presentation of the trophies
Norman Holford Cup for the BEST RUGBY TEAM. Highly commended were the 1st XV who
won 7/12 games.
But the trophy this year goes to a side which won 8/12 games (67% win rate) and scored 265
points for and only 164 against – THE U15As.
The Case Shield for the MOST PROMISING JUNIOR was a one horse race and goes to a
player who has great skills as well as leadership – DON PATERSON.
The trophy for the MOST IMPROVED RUGBY PLAYER had a lot of nominations from different
teams. They were: Wiehan Weber, Michael Masella, Lindo Sithebe, Vezi Mthembu and Tristan
Pickering. The trophy goes to someone who scarcely played rugby last year and made a
quantum leap this year – not known for his ball handling skills but well known for his big heart –
MATTHEW CLINTON.
The Andy Boesch Trophy for the BEST GOAL KICKER of the season was a very close
affair. It is decided by the seasons kicking results together with a goal kicking competition at the
end of the season. Rikus van der Westhuyzen and David Stanley shared the kicking roles in the
1st XV this year and they tied in the Interhouse kickoff. A difficult decision but kicker of the year
goes to the man who kicked the victory penalty against Voortrekker – RIKUS VAN DER
WESTHUYZEN .
The Hambly Trophy for the TACKLER OF THE YEAR had 5 nominations: Nic Butler; Don
Paterson; Wiehan Weber and Etienne Van Zuydam. They say that dynamite comes in small
packages. This player is totally fearless, cleans the fringes and is also a great closer of the
scrum half and flyhalf channels – SHANE COETZEE.
The trophy for the BEST 1ST TEAM RUGBY PLAYER OF THE YEAR is the most difficult to
decide and there was long debate over this one. The nominations were:
Rikus Van der Westhuyzen whose calm leadership and solid play at fullback were a big factor in
the success of the team this year.
However the man who always kept the side going forward as a great ball carrier and could
always be counted on when the match got physical - Rugby Player of the year for 2012 goes
to RUSSELL WEAVILL.
The Conradie Shield for the INTERHOUSE COMPETITION. Harland won the kicking
competition but this is a combination trophy and you also need to play the game. Second on
21,3 points was Jonsson House and the winners for 2012 on 35,7 points – for 2nd year in a row
- Campbell House
Vote of thanks to the following people:
To the coaches for hours spent on and off the field looking after your teams.
To the players for your commitment and heart and very good discipline - only 4 yellow cards and
no reds this season.
To our two Union referees: Mr Buchanan and Mr Bubb – thank you.
To Mr Hyam for the hours spent setting up the Sports Festival and juggling the fixtures.
To our match video cameraman and 1st team accessories manager –Jason Kobusch – thank
you.
Our nursing sisters, Sis Peter and Sis Ash and your dedicated 1st Aiders.
Two our official cheerleader – Cale Hartslief for his enthusiasm and perseverance to get all the
non-singers to sing.
Finally thank you to all the supporters who sit on the stands Saturday after Saturday – that’s you
– give yourselves and all the others mentioned a round of applause!

POST MATRIC
G.A.P. Year Post Matriculation Programme
Weekly Report
We started this week off with a 10km run! The furthest I have ever run before, but some of us
were given the option to just run 5km. We were training for the capital climb on Saturday
morning which was 15km, 8km uphill and the rest downhill. We needed to do some more
training for our expedition which is fast approaching. So Mr Davies planned for us to go on a two
day cycle which was about plus minus 60km.
The first day was quite easy as it was only 25km; we travelled through the Kean’s farm, whose
son was at Post Matric last year. We stayed the night on their farm. Our tents consisted of a fly
sheet, two bicycles as tent poles and pegs to hold them down, an ingenious idea from the
Posties last year. But what Mr Davies and Mr Neil didn’t tell us was that it had never been tested
by them personally! But thankfully we slept undisturbed. The next day we rode back to school.
That evening we went to Toastmasters. The also fast approaching Bundu Bash needed some
work so we all did some admin on it during the morning. It consisted of people building the track
for the race, designing signs and other minor details.
In the afternoon we had the Grade 10 boys and girls for a fitness session in preparation for their
higher berg hike. On Friday we had the Grade 9’s for OP. The two themes for the day were
basically teaching them about tents and leave no trace. We got everyone together and split
them into girl/ boy groups. Then the two posties that were with each group demonstrated and
checked tents with them for their hike they are doing later on the year. They were then sent
around the school doing various activities and solving riddles.
After Saturday the rest of the weekend was really relaxed, much needed after another busy and
exciting week!
Dancing
