CAMPUS NEWS
Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends of Old Trevertonian Brendon Lee, a pilot with
SA Express who passed away on Saturday in a flying accident whilst training for his Instructor's
Rating. Brandon, a School and Campbell House prefect matriculated in 2003, was a keen cricketer
and one of the fastest bowlers to have graced Treverton fields at 130km/hr. He also played first
team rugby and was a great athlete. Brandon will be remembered for his kindness and for being a
great source of encouragement to junior pupils who respected and looked up to him.
The funeral will be held at 14h00 on Thursday 4 August at the Bikers' Church, 126 Kruger Ave,
Midrand.
We are very proud of one of our Grade 12 College pupils, Nikita
Raciti, who was privileged to be part of the KZN Youth Choir
which was invited to participate in the 15th International Antonio
Vivaldi Choir Festival and the 9th International Choir Competition
'Anthonio Vivaldi' in Karpenisi, Greece during the June/July
holidays. The choir was awarded first prizes in Category C
(Mixed Youth Choir), Category E (Sacred Music) and Category F
(Folklore). They were also awarded gold medals for the choir with
the highest percentage in the competition and for the most
popular choir. The conductor of the choir was awarded a gold
medal as the Maestro Conductor (best conductor of the
competition). They received a standing ovation. After the
competition, the choristers had the privilege to do some sightseeing
in Greece, visiting Delphi, Kalumbaka, Corinth and Athens
Boys Berg Hike – Mr Derek Brown
The hike to the Mnweni area last weekend was well attended, with 14 boys and Ross
Marshall, a Post Matric. We have not had a school trip to this area before so it was an
exploratory trip to a fair degree. We spent the first night in the chalets at the community centre
because of the long trip to get there, and there being also very little time for hiking.
The aim was to try to summit the outer Mnweni Needle, a rather formidable peak of almost
2900m free from the escarpment. Unfortunately, when a group is big, there is often a large
amount of time spent waiting. We ran out of time for the actual summiting, with us getting to
about 2600 odd meters before a decision was made at 2:00pm to return. Also, not being a
formally protected area and with this being a seldom done peak, there were no distinct paths
other than cattle paths in the lower areas and we found the going slow because of the unsure
footing provided by tussocky grass.
We headed to an un-named cave up a deceptively steep hill for the night. This was a cave
where Basutho would occasionally overnight, and it afforded a fair view. This was a tough trip
but it was graced with great views such as of the north and south peak that make a
spectacular arching saddle on the escarpment, and of the jagged spires of the rockeries with
their general, Mponjwane peak, at one end.
Soccer
Girls Soccer vs Michaelhouse – Mr Steve Whitfield
On Wednesday 27th July the junior girls travelled to play soccer on the hallowed grounds of
Michaelhouse against Michaelhouse boys U15 E and F. History was made and the A’s scored
a convincing loss but had the Michaelhouse boys rattled. The B’s put in 2 goals with a cracker
from Julia Guthrie, but still lost 2-6.
Junior A Boys Soccer vs Michaelhouse – Mr Lance Duffield
On Wednesday 27th July the Junior A boys met Michaelhouse at Treverton for our first game of the
season. The coach and the players were keen to see what the freshly selected team could do
under the leadership of Captain Devon O’ Brien and Vice Captain Andrew Tilbury. Because the
team had only had two practices for the season so far, the team had not yet become familiar with
each other or their positions. Despite this the boys played well and ‘held their own’ for the first half
of the match despite many attacks at goal from Michaelhouse. Goalie, Devon O’ Brien made some
spectacular saves and kept the half-time score to 0 – 0. We came back in the second half with
enthusiasm and had far more opportunities at scoring. The game looked like it was closing to be a
0 – 0 draw until 10 minutes before the final whistle. Michaelhouse managed to capitalise on a gap
in the midfield and score. This left the full-time score at a 0 – 1 loss. Well done to Devon O’ Brien
for being man-of-the-match.
Karting
Mitchell Licen raced in a National event on the 9th of July, at iDube, KZN. He competed in the very
quick Super Rok class. There was some spectacular racing, with a few past SA champions in this
class. Mitchell managed to finish with two 3rds, and an 8th place in the last race. (His engine
started spluttering, as there was a problem with the spark-plug.) This gave him an overall 4th for
the day. Mitchell is not in the running for this Championship, as he missed the first 2 events. T.V.
coverage for this event will be on SS2 today, 17h00-18h00.Rapid Motion. Mitchell's class: Super
Rok # 221.
On the 24th July, Mitchell came 1st overall for the KZN Regional event. The racing was intense,
with the top four guys only fours hundreds of a second between 1st - 4th in qualifying!
He now leads the KZN Championship with more than 40 points.
PREP NEWS
Hockey
KZN Inlands and Midlands Team Representatives - Mrs Michelle Pieterse
During the June/July school holidays, a number of prep pupils participated in hockey festivals for
their province.
Tanaka Chivaviro played for the KZN Inlands (Girls) team and Franco Erasmus for the KZN Inlands
(Boys) team. Their teams came first and third respectively and both had very good tournaments.
Nolwazi Mabizela played for the KZN Midlands A team and landed up coming first in their pool after
a penalty shoot out in the final where Nolwazi did her team proud. Megan Weavill captained the
KZN Midlands B team and they came third in the same pool as the KZN Midlands A team. Tihan
van Zuydam played for the KZN Midlands B team (boys) and they too came third in their pool.
Bophelo Seoe took part in the U/12 tournament and she represented the KZN Midlands A team.
This team topped their pool at the end of the tournament, scoring a number of good goals.
Well done to all of the children on being excellent ambassadors for Treverton.
U/13 South Coast Hockey Tour - Mrs Michelle Pieterse
Mrs Michelle Pieterse and the U13 girls team
The U13 A girls hockey team enjoyed a very successful hockey tour at the South Coast on the
weekend 22 – 24 July 2011. After driving for 3 hours in the bus, we arrived at Creston College to
play our first opponents. We had a quick warm up and then started playing against the Ugu U14
team in a practice match. The Treverton U13 A’s felt that they had nothing to lose, playing against
an older age group and managed to score their first goal within a few minutes. This set the tone for
the rest of the game and we won the match 3-1.
Our competition on the Saturday were both U13 teams. We started at 9am against Creston
College U13A team and after just 17 seconds our first goal had been scored. The second goal was
in the box before the second minute was up. The Creston girls then gathered themselves together
and it wasn’t until the second half that we managed to slot another 2 goals. The end score being
4-0.
The Treverton girls then had a short 10 minute break before going onto the field to play another full
match, this being against South City U13A team. We managed to score 4 goals in the first half and
another 3 in the second half with 1 goal being disallowed. The final score of this match thus being
6-0 to Treverton. Well done to all the girls on a fantastic, unbeaten season. You played well
and definitely finished strong.
A great deal of fun was had during the remainder of the weekend, with much time being spent on
the beach. Thank you to Debbie Meyer for hosting us at her house and organising the fixtures and
to the KZN parents association for the funds that were raised and made available to us for this mini
tour.
Hockey
U9 Boys vs Cowan House and Howick Prep - Mrs Michelle Pieterse
U9 Boys playing Cowan House
The U/9 hockey boys have had a superb start to their hockey season. They began the term with a
convincing 7-1 win against Cowan House.
This last weekend the boys participated in a festival at Howick Prep school where they won 3
matches and lost 1. They beat Howick A 4-2, Howick B 6-0 and Bisley 5-0. They lost to Winterton A
2-1 in a very closely contested match.
Well done, boys and keep up the hard work.
U10 Boys vs Cowan House, Wembley and Howick – Mrs Michelle
Chaperon
On Saturday 23 July the Under 10 Mini Hockey boys travelled to Cowan House to play in their first
hockey match of the season. Unfortunately they lost this match, but played well and never gave up
till the very end!
U10 boys in action!
On Wednesday, 27th July they played their first match on the Treverton Astro. Once again they
played with determination, and beat Wembley 2 / 1.
On Saturday, 30th July the boys played in a festival at Howick Prep. They played four matches,
beating Winterton 2 - 1 and Athlone 3 - 0, they drew to Howick 1 - 1 and lost to a very strong
Pelham team.
Well done to Daniel Durham, Rhys Grobler, Chris Williams, James Taylor, Luthando Ndawo,
Gavin Veenstra and Thando Zungu who have all played hard and are improving with every
match.
U13A boys hockey results – Mr Marc Schulze
On Friday 22 July, our U13A hockey team had their first match of the term against H.C.A. We
started off a little rusty but managed to secure a 3-1 win in the. A screamer of a goal by Tihan Van
Zuydam secured the victory in the end.
Then the next day we had a big game against Cowan House. Apparently this team of ours,
throughout the years, has never prevailed against Cowan House. Well, we ended that statistic in
fine style on Saturday with a 2-0 victory; and it was almost 3-0 on many occasions.
Great start to the term; lets’ keep it up boys!
U13A vs Howick
On Wednesday the 27th of July, our U13A hockey team played on the Treverton Astro against
Wembley. A far too one sided game resulted in an 11-0 victory for us. Then on Saturday the 30th,
we had a much more challenging game against Howick Prep, at Howick Prep, on grass! Our boys
played out of their socks and ended up winning 2-1 even though we were missing some of our
usual U13A players. The boys who filled in the spaces from the B team can be very proud of their
efforts, as well as the regular team members. A great week's results.
U13B Match Results – Mr Stephen Meyer
The U13B team played Howick on the weekend. We played a well structured game which helped
us to score two goals. They were scored by Edward and Brandon. Howick could not penetrate our
solid defence leaving them goalless. If a man of the match could be awarded it would go to Chad.
On Monday we played Kings. We managed to draw 3 – 3. There was some lovely playing by our
team with special mention to our goal scorers, Edward, Brandon and Iviwe. Chad has been
promoted to the A side and thus Sam filled his position with great enthusiasm.
A special thanks to all our parents who were there to support our team.
Hi
U13 boys warm up on the astro
U11 Girls hockey report – Mrs Gail Palmer
The U11 girls had a good term and grew from strength to strength. The A side played in two
festivals and 3 games, coming away with 6 wins, 5 loses and 2 draws. Although the B side didn't
have many games and some of them had never having played before, they did very well only losing
1-0 to Clifton. The A side ended their season off on a very high note beating Clifton on our astro
4-0. Well done to all the girls on a good season.
Girls Soccer
U13A vs Cowan House - Mr Nick Robertson
The U13A Girls Soccer team played against Cowan House on Saturday. The girls loved playing the
game but unfortunately they were outclassed in the U13A and B team. The U13C team won their
game, playing good soccer. The girls’ enthusiasm for the game is wonderful to see!
U11 vs Cowan House – Mr Heinz Venter
On Saturday we played our first match against Cowan House. It was a very exciting game. Cowan
House managed to score 2 goals in the first half. However our girls came back strongly playing with
great determination. We held them in the second half and no goals were scored. The final score
was 2 - 0 to Cowan House. I was very pleased with our girls performance on Saturday. Most
importantly they enjoyed the game.
U9 & U10 vs Cowan House – Mr Daryl Bartels
The U 9 and U 10 Girls played their first soccer match against Cowan House on Saturday. They
had only had two practices but managed to play reasonably well. They were beaten in both age
groups but this can only improve as they get more skilled and have more experience on the field.
The Grade Two’s gave a wonderful Chapel Talk on Water and what it
means to all of us.
And of course all the fun we have with water!
POST MATRIC
Recently the Post Matrics were exceptionally privileged to meet with Dr. May Mhkise (the wife of
the KZN Premier) as part of their Business Communication Skills Training!
Meeting her, listening to her inspirational story and talking with her was a memorable and
unforgettable experience. Many of the Post Matrics left meeting with Dr. Mhkise inspired, humbled,
up-lifted and grateful for the chance to meet such an extra-ordinary person.
OLD TREVERTONIANS
Basketball update from Simphiwe Ngubane – Old Trevertonian 2010
“During the holiday there was a basketball tournament, that took place where the top 13 basketball
teams from various universities, from South Africa. UJ qualified for the tournament.
Before the tournament UJ had a 1 week camp, where we all, as a team stayed together, ate
together and the most important practiced together. The program consisted of two practice games
against a team of graduates, and 2 practice sessions 9am-10am and 6pm-8pm every day of the
week. The camp brought the team close and feeling confident.
It was my first university tournament, and I was feeling very nervous, but I managed to settle in
and played 4 out of the 5 games, which is an achievement as a 1st year (Rookie).
At the end of the tournament we came 3rd, Vaal university beat us 65-64 in the semi-finals, we lost
the game in the last minute because of our fouls, we played CPUT for positions and we won that
game, which put us into 3rd, WITS came 2nd and Vaal 1 st . The tournament was really good, we got
our bronze medals, but next year we are determined to push even harder than this year.”
Simphiwe Ngubane
