Hockey
U13a vs HCA (Coach: Mr Marc Schulze)
Our U13A boys hockey team opened their season with a 3-1 win over HCA. Although the game
was a little flat from our boys we produced a 10 minute purple patch of hockey where we scored
all 3 of our goals and then seemed to slumber again. But a great start nevertheless. Well done
COLLEGE
MUSIC
A group of Treverton College learners attended an afternoon concert at the Marionhill
Monastery on Sunday afternoon. Our learners were very appreciative of the music, a
programme of Baroque music, and also of the lovely church where it was held. The recorder
concerto by Telemann, played by Samantha Goldblatt, was a real inspiration to our recorder
players.
SOCCER
1 st team Girls
On Friday the 27th at 11h45 the girls were packed and ready for their pre-season mini tour to
the south coast. Everyone was very excited, and the team was only carrying one injury with
Megan Blades having damaged her ACL ligaments at practice the day before. After a short
drive to Scottburgh High, the girls started their double-header fixture being matched up with Port
Shepstone girls, it took a while to get into gear, but Treverton scored first , through the boot of
Londeka Mchunu, and there was lot of back and forth until the final minute when Port
Shepstone equalized to win the draw, leaving the final score at 1-1. The player of the game
being Elizabeth Pappas. The second game was against the hosts, and Treverton came out
firing! Scoring the first goal through Mchunu again, unfortunately the girls went to sleep for a bit
allowing the opposition the chance to score 2 goals and at half time the score was 2-1 to the
home side. The second half was all Treverton as the girls played with skill and determination,
scoring 3 more goals unanswered, 2 more from Mchunu as she went to the first hat-trick of the
season, and then the final blow from Tess Hartslief, with 5 minutes to play. The Scottburgh girls
fought back bravely for a consolation goal but Treverton won the game 4-3. Player of the game
was Londeka Mchunu. After the games we moved on to our beachside accommodation in
Margate, and after a meal at Larry's we were off to bed as we had an early rise on Saturday.
After a sunrise breakfast on Saturday it was off to Creston College for our fixture, the girls were
a little tired and some showing war wounds as Tess 'sniffles' Rouillard played with one boot on
due to blisters and Blades was struggling with a sore knee, and this showed in their play as
passes were missed and shots went wide including a wayward penalty strike, however, they
were still strong enough to put sections of play together. The first goal scored through Elizabeth
'bit' Pappas and continued pressure saw 2 more goals, by Londeka 'nunu' Mchunu, who is fast
becoming the go to girl for goal strikes. Creston scored a runaway goal at the end to finish the
game at 3-1 to the Treverton Girls. Congratulations to player of the game, Sabrina Miles. The
side is now fully prepared for the upcoming season, the first structured girls soccer league in the
Midlands. Good Luck to the girls and congratulations on the successful start to the season, the
girls did Treverton proud with their performance and their discipline on and off of the field. Thank
you to Mrs Clare Botha for giving up her time and sleep while accompanying the girls for the
duration of the weekend.
POST MATRIC
G.A.P. Year Post Matriculation Programme
After a well-earned mid-year break the Posties returned to Treverton for the third term of our
year of adventure. Although the holiday was three weeks long, six of the Posties were fortunate
enough to travel to Southern Mozambique for a paddling adventure around Inhaca Island to be
followed by some SCUBA Diving in Ponta Malongane.
We were put straight back in to action by attending Hella Hella leadership camp on the shores
of the Umkomaas River, with the aim to refocus the group for the remainder of the year. We
participated in many team building activities, the most difficult being on the first night which
involved a series of tasks which ended with two of our members being carried across the river
on an improvised stretcher. Other challenges included as few personal challenges such as the
Courage Jump, Small Group Initiatives and an Obstacle Course.
After a short return to Treverton we were sent into the Drakensberg for our first hike without
supervision by Mr Davie or Mr Neal. On Saturday we were dropped in the Cathedral Peak
Area; our route would be to hike to summit Orange Peel Gap overnighting at Sherman's Cave,
contour along to the Dragon and descend via Baboon Rock. This hike was a challenge for us to
tackle as a group after our team building camp and to assess our readiness to lead the Grade
10's on Shakedown next week and on the Excursion at the end of the term.
Lost in Paradise – Report by Lezanne Jacobs
Our time in Mozambique was one of the greatest experiences; I believe many of us have had in
our lives. The trip definitely didn’t go as planned, but it worked out better than any of us
anticipated!
The plan was set to start at Treverton College on Tuesday morning and then to drive to Ponta
Malongane. From there we travelled to Santa Maria by means of a truly African taxi experience.
It was a very long drive through the beautiful tropical country and we even had to push the cars
a few times on the bumpy, sandy Mozambique roads! We slept in a tented camp and enjoyed
each other’s company around the dinner table.
The next morning we packed up and set out to sea on beautiful Pocahontas dubbed boats. We
paddled only a few kilometres, crossing Hells’ Gate, only to reach the stunning Inhaça Island. It
was here where we experienced a rather interesting afternoon and evening. As we set up
camp, we realised that the tent packed for the three girls was as faulty as could be-the one door
had not even one working zip, our tent poles were too short and there was one pole missing!
After some unconventional setting up, that included amazing sewing skills and a few funnylooking
knots our tent was up, the front (and now only) door, balancing on a stick. To test us a
bit further, a minor storm swept through and we were dripping wet, inside our tent! As if nothing
else could go wrong, the support stick slipped and made a huge tear in the fly sheet. It was
interesting.
After our alternative camping experience we set off for a long hard day. We paddled for what
felt like forever on the choppy cobalt sea; the day was very challenging as well as rewarding.
Upon arrival at Inhaça Village we decided not to continue paddling to Portuguese Island and
rather to stay in picturesque rustic and rather tropical huts. We enjoyed a magical lunch at
Restuarante Lucas and we all enjoyed the rest after a hard days’ work! The next day we
paddled a few kilometres to Portuguese Island where we enjoyed an amazing day in paradise
snorkeling, swimming and collecting stunning shells and washed up sea stars; some of us even
enjoyed a siesta on the clean white sand!
By this stage the weather was turning for the worse with a huge cold front pushing in. This
churned the sea up which made it almost impossible to paddle through and the current
increased in strength. As a result paddling back to Santa Maria was no longer an option. After
some negotiation with a local boat owner we chartered a Dhow to take us back to Santa Maria.
From there we
travelled back to
Malongane in our
African taxi! We
stayed in an amazing
luxury tented camp
situated in the heart of
the dune forest, it was
truly magical!
Unfortunately we
could not dive as
planned as a result of
huge swells; instead
we met up with a past
Postie and her family
and enjoyed watching
movies and having a
braai with them! We
also enjoyed playing
on the beach and
shopping in the quaint
Mozambique stalls!
We are truly thankful for the opportunity to go on this trip. It was an amazing holiday filled with
memories we will hold with us forever! A special thank you goes to Mr Greg Simmons who built
the boats we used with his apprentice who is affectionately known as Four-By.
