News –January 2013
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy New Year!! It is amazing how fast
2012 went by. Our interest groups had a
busy year full of fun and social connections.
I was very sorry to miss the fantastic
Holiday Party. My father, who is living with
me, had a health crisis and we had to rush
him to the hospital that evening. I heard
from many members that the party was a
great success. Ellen McAndris, her
committee and the dessert bakers did an
outstanding job. Our events keep getting
better every year. Your comments and
suggestions help us to accomplish this so,
keep them coming!
I am not a person who makes New Year’s
resolutions, but this year I am praying for
good health for my family and all of my
Hampton Lake friends. Without our health it
is hard to take advantage of all the
wonderful activities available to us here in
Hampton Lake.
Our community is always ready to help
anyone in need. The new Hampton Lake
is a great addition to communication within
our community.
Have a happy and healthy New Year!
My husband, Tony, and I moved here from
southern New Jersey in late December
2008. I can hardly believe we are
completing our fourth year here in
Hampton Lake!
Our extended family has been vacationing
PROFILE (cont’d)
When the Hampton Lake Women’s Group was first
started, it became evident fairly quickly that in order to
reach out to working women, some interest groups
should be held in the evening. The board invited me to
meet with them and talk about what might be appealing.
We decided on a Dinner Group and a
Theatre/Performing Arts Group, and I agreed to chair
both. Since that time I have truly enjoyed the opportunity
to meet and get to know so many wonderful neighbors!
There has been tremendous growth in the HLWG, which
is just wonderful. With more people to help out, it didn’t
seem necessary for me to chair two interest groups any
more, and, just recently, Darice Ahrnsbrak graciously
agreed to take over the Dinner Group. The Performing
Arts Group keeps me busy, and I enjoy organizing the
outings. Before we left New Jersey, I managed a 1500seat
performing arts center, so that experience with
theater has been helpful.
Approximately every other month we attend a play,
musical or concert, usually in Savannah or on Hilton
Head. HLWG members, spouses, friends, etc. are all
welcome. We are so fortunate to have lots of venues
and performance types to choose from. I try to pick
events that have broad appeal, and I always welcome
ideas and suggestions, so please feel free to e-mail me
at any time with your ideas. Hope to see you at the next
event!
ART GROUP
At our meeting in December, Pat Roth led the discussion
about women artists during the Baroque Era. At last,
there are women making a mark in the art world and just
beginning to get recognition that extends beyond their
local areas and into the courts of the monarchies of the
17 th Century.
On Tuesday January 8, Carol Morse, Betsy Rudd and
Marsha Morgan will continue the discussion into the 18 th
Century with the host of new styles and approaches that
came with the larger, more affluent middle classes,
along with enormous societal influences that slightly
opened doors for progress of women artists.
On Friday, January 11 we will join Pat Roth’s Day Trip
Group tour of SCAD. Museum admission is $10 ($8 for
2
seniors). Contact Pat with your reservation by
December 28. Those who sign up for this trip will
receive an email with more specific information.
On Tuesday, January 15, we will have a docent-led tour
of the Uffizi Gallery Exhibition at the Jepson Museum in
Savannah.
On Tuesday, Jan. 22, Jacque Rosen will give a
demonstration of her pastel and ink techniques for the
Studio Group. Members of the Discussion Group are
also welcome to come to the demonstration and to try
the technique if they wish. For information on any of
these events, contact Carol Morse.
AMERICAN MAH JONGG (co-ed)
The group meets every Wednesday at 6:00 pm in the
Lakeview Room. RSVP’s are encouraged to make sure
given to new members, and it usually takes 3 lessons to
be comfortable with the game. A 2012 Mah Jongg card
will have to be purchased ($7 - $8) at
www.nationalmahjonggleague.org in order to play the
game. Join the League (it’s free) and receive free
shipping.
To join the Mah Jongg Group, to RSVP, or for more
information contact Joan Grayson.
THEATER/PERFORMING ARTS GROUP (co-ed)
Approximately every other month we attend a musical,
concert, play, etc. in the Bluffton/Hilton Head, Savannah,
or Beaufort area. So far, we have enjoyed several
musicals at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton
Head, a tribute to Bobby Darin at the Jazz Corner, and
“Riverdance” and “Southern Nights” in Savannah. We
had 32 Hampton Lakers at our last event, “The Beat
Goes On” in Savannah, and a good time was had by all.
Our next outing, on Friday, February 22, will be to see
“I Hate Hamlet” at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
This side-splitting comedy is described by the Arts
Center as “the funniest ghost story you'll ever see! This
raucous comedy tells the story of a successful TV actor
who moves from L.A., confronts the New York stage
scene, rents a fabulous apartment in the Village and is
offered the role of a lifetime…Hamlet! He soon finds
himself not only haunted by his decision but by the ghost
of the legendary Shakespearean actor John Barrymore.
Relentlessly imposing his "advice," Barrymore instigates
a duel with the young man over art, success, his
4
girlfriend…and even the apartment. See the show the
NY Times called "…hilarious."
Tickets (group rate) are $37. Keep an eye out on your
email for full details!
On March 7, we will see comedian Jerry Seinfeld in
Savannah. There are no tickets left in the original
reserved block of seats, but if you are interested in
purchasing your own tickets, e-mail Holly for box office
information. You are more than welcome to join us for
carpooling and dinner before the show! Remember –
spouses, friends, etc. are most welcome to join us! For
more information about the group, or to join and be on
the e-mail notification list, contact Holly O’Brien.
WINE DINNER EVENINGS (coed)
If you are interested in sampling some of the local
restaurants’ wine/dinner pairings, Barbara Hege will be
your guide to elegant evenings of fun. There will not be a
regular monthly evening since it will depend on the
restaurants’ schedules.
Our first wine dinner will be scheduled for late January.
No date has been set since the restaurants haven’t
scheduled their after the holidays events yet. To be
notified as soon as the dinner is scheduled, for more
distribution list, email Barbara at brhege@hargray.com.
