The Jewish Women’s
Repertory Company
Young Israel of Century City
The Cast and Crew
Sabina Levine (Sky Masterson)
Sabina is delighted to be a part of the JWRC for the second time.
Since she was a little girl, Sabina has had a passion for singing,
dancing, and acting. She has performed in many stage productions,
including Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey II), Steel Magnolias,
Kindertransport, and last year’s Once Upon a Mattress (Jester).
She has also appeared in national commercials on television and
radio. Sabina would like to thank her neighbors for not filing a claim
of disturbing the peace while she was rehearsing, and her husband and daughters
for their love and support.
Karen Holender (Sarah Brown)
Karen hails from Manchester, England and is so happy to be back
for a third year performing with the amazing JWRC. With experience
on New York and UK stages, Karen started her career at a young
age performing for both music and theater audiences. Her credits
include playing Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Reno in Anything
Goes, and performing West Side Story at the Edinburgh Fringe
festival. She is now a busy mom to two gorgeous little guys, Yehuda
and Yonatan. Karen would like to thank her big guy, Darrin, for his continued love
and support and all the ladies of the JWRC for a fabulous experience.
Yael Ross (Nathan Detroit)
Yael is very excited to return to the stage in her first performance
with the JWRC. Although this is her first performance with this
talented group of women, she is no stranger to the all-female cast
and her fate to play a man. In fact, Yael has only played one female
role since she began performing in the 9th grade, and that lapse in
judgement occurred during college when men were forced to play
men and women forced to play women! She is happy to return to
the natural order channeling her well-rehearsed study of three older brothers into
the role of Nathan Detroit. Yael would like to thank the YULA stage, and particularly
Peter Faber for seeing her deep voice just waiting to escape. She would also
like to thank her family, friends and the JWRC for their support and the opportunity
to act once again.
Amy Ritz (Miss Adelaide)
Amy is so happy to be singing and dancing for a second year with
the JWRC. Amy has been performing in musicals since high school,
but playing Adelaide in Guys & Dolls is by far her favorite role. A big
thank you to her husband, Jonny, and gorgeous kids, Adam and
Zoe, for their love and support. I love you a bushel and a peck!!!
Also, thank you to Margy and the entire cast and crew for this wonderful
experience.
Batsheva Frankel (Nicely-Nicely Johnson)
As a drama major at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Batsheva (then
known as Susan Hirschman) performed in Semelwiess, Moonchildren,
and Commencement before focusing on directing. After
graduating, she worked in the film industry for eight years, and in
theatre as the artistic director of the Third Rail Theatre Company
for two seasons. Batsheva then gave it all up for a more lucrative
and glamorous career in Jewish education! In addition to teaching
Tanach and English at various schools, she directed The Wizard of Oz and
The Little Princess at Valley Torah High School. Batsheva is grateful to the JWRC
for giving her a chance to perform for the first time in 20 years, and a chance for
women spanning the whole spectrum of the Jewish community to come together,
meet and make friends.
Juli Shanblatt (Arvide Abernathy)
Juli is very excited to be in this production and feels fortunate to
have worked with such a talented and diverse cast and crew. Juli’s
career in “the industry” began with an appearance on Romper
Room at age 6. Since then she also performed in her 6th grade
Spanish class production of Don Enrique Va A Los Estados Unidos
(Don Enrique) and played in the pit orchestra (flute) for Guys &
Dolls and A Chorus Line at MIT. Juli also appears before a live audience
daily at Bais Yaakov School for Girls as a physics teacher. After annoying
her beautiful family for many years with her constant singing of Broadway show
tunes, they (and Chani Weiss) finally forced her to audition for this show. She
thanks Neal, Raizy, Esti, and Mimi for all their support.
Nina Kleinman (Benny Southstreet)
This is Nina’s second year performing with the JWRC and she has
thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Although Nina has performed
in many all-women’s productions before, this is her debut as a man!
Nina would like to thank Margy, Shani, and Rachelle for this wonderfully
challenging opportunity. Thank you for coming and enjoy the
show!
Michele Poltorak (Rusty Charlie)
Michele is excited to be rejoining the JWRC in this year’s performance
of Guys & Dolls. Michele has been involved in several
productions, including last year’s performance of Once Upon a
Mattress and Hebrew University’s presentation of Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. When not performing, Michele is
the mother of two beautiful girls, Hannah and Emily, and is also a
full-time employment litigation attorney, representing both private
and public employers in their labor disputes. Michele thanks her husband Barry
for his continued love and support (and showing all us dolls how to be “dice” guys)
and all the women of the JWRC for their friendship.
Kelila Green (Harry The Horse)
Kelila is honored to be working with such beautiful and talented
women in the JWRC for the second year in a row. She would like
to thank those women who have been there (mothers, friends, coworkers,
fellow cast members) with an open ear, an open heart, and
open arms. Kelila is proud to be continuing the tradition of honoring
the name Harry (Sir Harry in Once Upon a Mattress and Harry the
Horse in Guys & Dolls) and cannot wait to find out what Margy has
in store for next year’s show.
Daphne Orenshein (Lieut. Brannigan)
Jewish, obsessive-compulsive, gleefully married, algebra-teaching,
ranting mother of four seeks perfect fool-proof brisket recipe.
Please e-mail recipe to dorenshein@hillelhebrew.org. Thank you.
P.S. Thank you Jonathan for letting me leave the house to rehearse
on many evenings. Thank you Margy for giving me the opportunity
to develop my dry sense of humor and for being a rockin’ director,
producer, and disciplinarian(!). This was certainly a blast!
Meira Kligman (Big Jule / Gambler)
A native New Yorker, hopeless romantic, and honorary Chicagoan
with lots of relatives from the Windy City, Meira is thrilled to be
playing “Big Jule from Chicago.” At age five Meira was spotted in
the audience of Annie by a producer who offered her an audition for
the role of Molly. Meira’s father declined, but Meira persevered and
took her passion for performing out on her family, forcing them to sit
through monthly plays and musicals that Meira directed and starred
in. A big thank-you to Margy, the JWRC and a wonderful cast for giving her this
opportunity to feel the magic again! Thanks to all of Meira’s friends; she wouldn’t
be on this stage without their support and encouragement. She dedicates her
performance to the memory of her grandparents, Mort and Rose Einbinder.
Barbara Gindi (General Matilda B. Cartwright / Hot Box Doll)
Barbara is very excited to be taking part in the JWRC performance
of Guys & Dolls. After seeing Once Upon a Mattress last year, she
couldn’t wait to try out for the next production. A mother of five,
Barbara wishes to thank her family for pushing her to do this and
for supporting her, practicing lines and dance steps and letting her
leave the house during the hardest hours of the evening to attend
practice. She wishes to send her love to her husband Alan who had
to take over for her and who encouraged her to do this. Barbara is honored to be
working with such a talented and warm cast of women and sends a big thank you
to Margy, Rachelle and Shani for bringing JWRC to the community.
Caryn Malkus (Angie The Ox / Mimi)
Caryn has been dancing since the age of three. Throughout her life
she has performed in many shows, and her favorites include West
Side Story, Pippin, Gypsy, and Chicago. At Tufts University she
sang with an all-female a cappella group. Most recently she was
Ann-Margret in the European tours of the musical Elvis the Legend.
She is excited to be a part of this production, after taking a hiatus
from performing to focus on her teaching career, her choreography,
and her family. She would like to thank her parents for putting her in dance classes
all those years ago, her husband Mitch for his love and support, and her twoyear-old
twin boys, Eitan and Coby, for always singing along whenever she was
practicing!
Janice Tanenbaum (Agatha / Hot Box Doll)
Janice is excited to be part of this production of Guys & Dolls. She
has been involved in all aspects of theater from a young age. At
Beverly Hills High School she sang in the Minnesingers and was
involved in both the musical productions and the Shakespeare festival.
Janice has also sung and danced in numerous family musical
productions. She continued her theatrical talents at the Claremont
Colleges where she produced and directed such plays as Lost in
Yonkers, Isn’t it Romantic and Crossing Delancey. Janice has an MBA and works
as a Major Gifts Officer for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Sarah Crighton (Martha / Hot Box Doll)
Sarah is a preschool teacher at the Garden School. She appeared
in last year’s JWRC production of Once Upon a Mattress and has
participated in Kol Neshama, a performing arts camp for girls. She
is happy to be performing once again with such a wonderful group
of women.
Chana Alisa Simon (Officer Friendly / Gambler)
After many small time gigs at VTHS and Camp Sternberg, Chana
makes her grand début on the JWRC stage. She is currently studying
for a BSc in Microbiology and would like to thank Margy and
the cast for a really good excuse to procrastinate from doing her
schoolwork. She really enjoyed working on this show. As Officer
Friendly she’d like to remind everyone that no gambling is allowed
in the audience and to drink responsibly. Enjoy the show!
Sally Ben-Tal (Hot Box M.C. / Gambler / Cocoanut Grove Waiter)
Sally is delighted to be a part of this year’s JWRC production of
Guys and Dolls. She has appeared in several plays, including
Center of the Star by Yehuda Hyman and A Long Bridge Over Deep
Waters by James Still, and the films Nonfat and The Window. She
has also co-written and directed several plays for her husband’s
religious school classes. She wants to thank her family and friends
for their love and support.
Chava Sigala (Liver Lips Louie / Hot Box Waiter)
Chava is a senior at Valley Torah High School and has been acting
in Kol Neshama since she was eleven. She has also appeared in
several school plays.
Stefanie Etshalom (Society Max)
Stefanie is thrilled to be a part of the JWRC and to be performing
alongside such a wonderful and talented group of women. “Morah
Stefanie” performs during the week at Yeshivat Yavneh and does a
weekly Shabbat “show” at Young Israel of Century City for toddlers,
their mothers, and the men who can hear her through the walls of
the 9:30 Beit Midrash Minyan. While these performances and those
in her car and kitchen are fun (but not for her five children who tell
her to save it for the show), it is a dream come true for a frum woman to sing on
stage in a professional production where the audience members are over 5 years
old and potty-trained. Thank you to everyone in the JWRC for this amazing opportunity,
for their unbelievable dedication, and for having patience with her as she
whipped her two left feet into shape. Thank you to our supporters for making this
show possible!
Ronnie Kaye (Melvin the Rat)
Formerly a math teacher at Hillel Hebrew Academy, Ronnie is now
a psychotherapist in private practice, a published author, and a firstyear
doctoral candidate in psychoanalysis. A veteran of the JWRC’s
first two productions (The Mikado and Once Upon A Mattress), she
is once again happily singing bass as one of the gamblers in the
chorus of Guys & Dolls.
Rebecca Asher (Hot Box Doll)
Rebecca Asher recently moved to Los Angeles after graduating
from Stern College for Women in New York City. She grew up in Atlanta
where she began taking dance classes at age five. She enjoys
all types of dance, especially ballet. Rebecca is currently working at
Maimonides Academy.
Sheila Meyer (Hot Box Doll)
At the age of five Sheila’s mother enrolled her in ballet class, and
she hasn’t stopped dancing since! After graduating from college
Sheila took her childhood dream and made it a reality: she started
her very own dance studio in her hometown of Atlanta, so she could
pass on her love to others. Since moving to LA just three years ago,
Sheila founded A Time For Dance, a dance and fitness studio that
caters to the needs of the Orthodox Jewish community. Her days
are filled teaching classes and spending time with her husband and two children.
Heather Rothman (Hot Box Doll)
Heather grew up in Los Angeles, has been dancing since the age
of five, and is excited to have this opportunity to perform in Guys &
Dolls with such a wonderful cast of dedicated and talented women.
Her other passion is books, and she currently hosts her own cable
TV show entitled “BookTalk with Heather Joy.” Heather would like
to thank the cast and directors for sharing their generous spirit and
esprit-de-corps.
Arleen Tanenbaum (Hot Box Doll)
Arleen’s most important role has been as mother of six and grandmother
of four. Her voice could be heard exhorting her kids from
alley to street and roof to basement. With such lung power she
starred in her family’s well-known, original B’nai Mitzvah and wedding
productions, hospital parodies, her daughter Janice’s MBA
graduation, organizational events, and, most recently, the Beth
Jacob tribute dinner. She is thrilled to be performing with Janice, her
daughter and fellow doll, in this production.
Margy Horowitz (Co-Director / Musical Director)
For the JWRC’s third production, Margy decided to prove that she
could produce and direct a show while simultaneously experiencing
horrible morning (ahem – that’s “all-day”) sickness. Luckily our
fantastic cast and crew helped make sure that this show would be
as great as the last two. Thanks to Rachelle, Shani, Danielle, all
of our choreographers, and a fabulous cast for a job well done. It
was terrific working with all of you! And of course Margy must, as
always, thank her amazing husband Jeremy and 3-year-old daughter Julia for their
continued love and support.
Rachelle Friedman (Co-Director)
Rachelle Freedman received her B.A. in Theatre from Georgia State
University and has taught acting to children across the country. She
has also written and directed plays for various Jewish schools and
camps, including several in the Los Angeles area. After playing King
Septimus in last year’s JWRC production of Once Upon a Mattress,
Rachelle made the transition from a very silent role (literally) to one
just a bit more vocal. She’d like to thank Margy, Shani, and the most
fabulous group of dolls ever, as well as her guy Yacov and her best girl, Hannah
Honey.
Shani Rotkovitz (Producer / Stage Manager)
Shani still remembers when her friend Margy called her up a few
years ago and said “Hey, I have an idea…and I need help.” So
with three degrees and many years of production under her belt,
she said “Sure, why not?” And the Margy/Shani dynamic was born.
Happy to be back producing and stage managing once again for
a fantastic JWRC show, Shani is super excited to be working with
Margy, Rachelle, Danielle and the fantastic cast of Guys & Dolls.
She would especially like to thank the students of BHHS for all their help on the
tech crew. And of course her parents for sending her to art school. Twice. And her
friends and family (and cute neglected cat Ahavi) for giving her up for six months
out of the year.
Congratulations
Daphne!
cheering your performance.
