3.8.2 CABLE BURIAL PLOUGHS<br />

Cable types <strong>and</strong> installation techniques<br />

This section <strong>of</strong> the report reviews the various types <strong>of</strong> cable burial plough<br />

which are available for the burial <strong>of</strong> subsea cables. The mode <strong>of</strong> operation <strong>of</strong><br />

each plough is described together with example types <strong>of</strong> each plough including<br />

details <strong>of</strong> manufacturers <strong>and</strong> owners.<br />

The different types <strong>of</strong> cable burial ploughs which are reviewed are as follows:<br />

Conventional Narrow Share Cable Ploughs;<br />

Advanced Cable Ploughs (including Modular Cable Ploughs);<br />

Rock Ripping Ploughs; <strong>and</strong><br />

Vibrating Share Ploughs.<br />

The general principle <strong>of</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> a cable plough is illustrated in Figure<br />

3.10.<br />

It is estimated there are now approximately 30 conventional narrow share <strong>and</strong><br />

approximately 25 advanced cable ploughs (advanced, rock ripping <strong>and</strong> vibrating<br />

share) currently in service around the world.<br />

Conventional narrow share cable ploughs<br />

This type <strong>of</strong> cable burial plough is a passive tool towed from a host vessel. The<br />

plough share cuts a wedge <strong>of</strong> soil which is then lifted by the action <strong>of</strong> the plough<br />
