North West and Central Coast State and Federal MPs
UNITE on F3-M2 Link
A group of Coalition MPs last week
announced the formation of the missing
link action network to fight for the
prioritisation of the F3-M2 Link.
During the meeting all attending MPs,
including Liberal Party State President
Senator Arthur Sinodinos, Member
for Berowra Philip Ruddock, Member
for Bradfield Paul Fletcher, Member
for Bennelong John Alexander, State
Member for Davidson Jonathan O’Dea,
Member for Gosford Chris Holstein,
Member for Hawkesbury Ray Williams,
and Member for Castle Hill Dom Perrottet
signalled their support for the project
and their commitment to work with the
O’Farrell Government, and any future
Abbott Government, to deliver the best
outcome for the community.
“The F3-M2 connector is the single most
important road connection for the people
of the North-West and Central Coast,”
said Mr Kean. “Coalition MPs from
across the North West and the Central
Coast are united in their support for the
F3-M2 Link. The County of Cumberland
Plan in 1951 planned a highway link from
Sydney to the Central Coast, and 60
years later we still do not have that road.
“The most recently published NSW
Government estimate of the cost of this
new road is 4.75 Billion. A project of this
scale is likely to require funding from
the NSW and federal governments and
would most likely be built in partnership
with the private sector.”
The group also called upon federal Labor
to restore the $150 million of funding
and called upon Infrastructure NSW
to recommend that work on the F3-M2
missing link be the highest priority for the
NSW government.

Berowra Rural Fire
Brigade Thanks Local
Community Groups
Berowra Rural Fire Brigade
recently held its 69 th Annual
General Meeting. At the meeting
members thanked local community
organisations for their ongoing
support and commitment through
the generous donations made to the
brigade over the past year.
The brigade has used these
donations to undertake construction
of a dedicated clean area for
maintenance and storage of
recently acquired specialist
breathing apparatus. In addition
the brigade has also been able to
purchase equipment such a brush
cutters, pole saws and blowers to
help members construct fire breaks
for hazard reductions and lockers to
store members’ protective clothing.
Some funds together with future
donations are also being put aside
to enable the station roof to be
raised to allow the new larger fire
tankers to fit into the parking bays.

The Hornsby Art Prize is an
acquisitive visual arts competition
that offers $5,000 in cash for the
winner. This year, entries will be
displayed at Council’s beautiful new
arts hub, the Wallarobba Arts and
Cultural Centre.
In all there will be six weeks of
cultural events, from October 13
until November 25, at Wisemans
Ferry, Brooklyn, Epping and all
points in between.

Berowra was not going to be out
done when it raised over $1,500
for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai PCYC
‘Time for Kids’ event at Hornsby
Mall on Saturday 14 April 2012.
I arrived at the Florence Street Mall
to see Hornsby Shire A Ward Cllr
Mick Smart of Berowra Heights
behind bars of the mock gaol set up
near the fountain.
“Hey Mick give me some money
for my bail so that I can get out of
here,” the Councillor called out to
me.
“No way,” I replied, “Not until
Council waivers all those parking
fines against me for parking on my
front verge for 20 years!”
So there the Councillor was stuck
behind bars and my Ned Kelly
alter- ego just sitting back smiling.
But not for long, for along came a
pledge of $500 from Berowra Apex
and a cheque from Berowra Lions
for $1,000. What great Samaritans
they were!

Doggie Rescue.

Dear BT,
The Hornsby Homelessness Task Force goes
from strength to strength in its quest to increase
awareness about the homeless plight in the Hornsby
region.
For a second year StreetSmart has awarded funding
to the Task Force with 2012 seeing $2000 as the
donation amount. Last year StreetSmart allocated
$1000 to our work. The latter went straight into the
refurbishment of a shower recess in the Brooklyn
Community Health Centre.
This year the money will be directed to purchase
food to increase the number of times per week
our homeless can access meals. We appreciate
Hornsby Soroptimists for managing our Task Force
bank account.
StreetSmart raises the money by conducting a
project called DineSmart. This means that local
restaurants allocate part of their income to
provide funding for the most disadvantaged in our
community.
Thank you to StreetSmart and everyone who
participated in the fundraising exercise. You have
all made a huge difference to the lives of those who
are some of the most vulnerable in our society.

I am disappointed to report the late night vandalism
of my car on Easter Sunday.
I heard a loud noise at 11pm and the laughter of
a group of teenage boys running away from my
property on Beryl Avenue, Mt Colah. The following
morning I discovered my car had taken a large
impact to the roof requiring costly repairs.
It upsets me that we still have to contend with such
reckless and antisocial behaviour If anyone has any
information please contact Hornsby Police station
where a crime report has been lodged.

Battalion A.I.F and had enlisted in May 1915. Whether the reports
of the action at Gallipoli or the news of the casualties spurred them
on to enlist we do not know. All three however had some previous
military experience.
The H.F Kennedy listed on the Berowra War Memorial was most likely
Herbert Francis Kennedy. Herbert’s link to the area is difficult to determine,
although as he listed his occupation upon enlistment as a railway fettler it
is likely that he worked on the railway line crucial to the establishment of
Berowra village.
Herbert was 37 years old and a married man when he enlisted on the 24th
May 1915. He was also an old soldier who had served with the NSW Army
Medical Corps in the Boer War fifteen years previously. Quite why an old
stretcher-bearer would enlist in the infantry is not known, but that is what he
did when he joined the ranks of the newly formed 20th Battalion.
Mr. George Springhall was a successful accountant and insurance loss
assessor who had built a new house in Glenview Road, Mt.Kuring-gai
in 1908, a house that still stands today. George’s eldest son, Victor
Hubert Springhall, and his son in law, Charles Holmes Howard, were
serving members of the Citizen’s Militia Forces. Both had recently been
commissioned as officers with the 21st Woollahra Infantry Regiment when
they enlisted with the 20th Battalion on the 5th May 1915.
Private Herbert Francis Kennedy embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT
Kanowna on the 19th June 1915. One week later Second Lieutenant Victor
Springhall and Lieutenant Charles Howard left Sydney aboard the HMAT
Berrima on the 26th June 1915. Within two months all would be fighting on
Gallipoli.
Officers’ Victor Springhall and Charles Howard both arrived at Gallipoli on
the 16th August 1915. The disastrous August offensives at Lone Pine, the
Nek, Hill 971 and Chunuk Bair were over and the 20th Battalion would
spend the majority of their days on Gallipoli defending Russell’s Top. Herbert
Kennedy did not land until the 31st August 1915.
Victor Springhall was promoted to Lieutenant on the 26th August 1915.
He then fell to one of the major ailments that had plagued the troops since
shortly after the landing- dysentery. Victor was transferred to a hospital on
Mudros the 21st September 1915 and would not return to Gallipoli, the
disease eventually leading to his return to Australia.
Charles Howard was promoted to Captain on the 1st September 1915 and
was later made Adjutant Vice Captain on the 1st October 1915. Herbert
Kennedy was promoted to acting corporal on the 11th September 1915
to replace his corporal. Neither man suffered injury or sickness whilst at
Gallipoli, serving until the 20th Battalion left Gallipoli aboard the ‘Prince
Abbas’ at 0331 on the morning of the 20th December 1915 amongst the
very last Australians to evacuate Gallipoli.
Of the six men five would survive the war and return to Australia. Ernest
Jefferies would continue to fight with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front
and eventually reach the rank of Sergeant. The technical ability that he had
displayed which lead to him becoming a signaller
may well have ensured that he would later be
accepted by the newly established Australian flying
Corps (AFC) for training as a pilot.
He was transferred to the AFC in March 1918 and
was sent to the 6th Training Squadron on the 25th
July 1918. On the morning of the 28th of August
1918 he was killed when his aircraft collided with
another aircraft. Two men crewed the other aircraft
and all three were killed.
His older brother Frederick, who had learned
Morse code with Ernest several years earlier, was in
England with the 33rd Battalion A.I.F at the time and
attended the funeral. Ernest Jefferys was buried at
Leighterton Cemetery in Gloucestershire.

“I’m just ready to
chuck it all in!”
This usually positive individual I was
talking to was now positively negative
about his situation. His frustration was
not difficult to feel and the internal
turmoil that was going on was no
longer able to be contained below the
surface.
When I asked him a few questions it
became apparent that the reason for
his upset was that he had been set a
task that he felt was just too far ‘out of
his league’. He had left school at year
nine and had never enjoyed reading
or writing, he got by, but he avoided
both of these disciplines as often as
he could.
The task he was given was a
challenge but many people (including
the person who set it) would find it
quite straightforward.
So he was intimidated, overwhelmed
and just did not know where to start
and I am sure that we have all felt like
that in the past.
Different people find different things
intimidating: understanding a financial
report; speaking in front of a group
of people; demonstrating sporting
prowess; intimately sharing your
feelings with someone else; or not
knowing how to dress appropriately
for functions… many things that you
might take for granted, others can
struggle with at the most basic level.
For me, reading and writing are
second nature, I am not intimidated
by them at all but this is where I need
to be careful because just because
I find them easy doesn’t mean that
everyone does.
Intimidation is a real thing and it can
stop us in our tracks and cause us to
pull back from the opportunities that
are presenting themselves.
I took a bit of time to help my friend
structure his response to the task
he had been given…with a little
coaching he was able to overcome
the intimidation and move on because
he ‘leant’ on someone else.
When I find myself ‘out of my depth’
that is when I am glad that I can lean
on the Lord and I can gain strength
from Him.

Following the successful Brooklyn ANZAC & Memorial
Dedication Service on Sun 15 April 2012, I then attended
the Berowra Parade & Service on the following Sun 22 April
and the Hornsby Dawn Service on ANZAC Day 25 April. It
was great to see so many community organisations, youth
groups and school reps attend all these events as many were
during the school holidays. Army cadets from 226 unit at
Normanhurst Boys High attended all 3 services and also the
Hornsby Parade & Service on Sun 22 April.
At Berowra the RSL Sub Branch President Bob Dobson (of Mt Kuringgai)
read the WW1 poem ‘In Flanders Field’ by Lt Col John McCrae,
MD 1872-1918, Canadian Army.
Bob & Shirley’s grandson Ethan Ellis (8) followed with an excellent
confident reading of ‘The Response’ to that poem. Ethan attends Mt
Colah PS and wore his 1st Asquith Cub Scout uniform. Well done
Ethan.
At Hornsby some 2,000 attended the 5am ANZAC Day Dawn
Service followed by a ‘Gun Fire’ breakfast hosted by Hornsby RSL
Club (Pres Colin Bourke).
“I was pleased to see so many of our local WW2 veterans, youth and
schools attend our ANZAC service,” said Rod White, Pres Hornsby
RSL SB.
Senior Prefect from Asquith Boys High, Sam Gibbons (Mt Colah),
read the ‘Prayer for the Nation’. Fellow Navy member CPOMT (Chief
Petty Officer Marine Technician) Andrew Lee RAN (Hornsby Heights)
read the ‘Commemoration of the Fallen’.
Cadet Bugler Nathan Elliott of 226 ACU at Normanhurst Boys
High, sounded the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ on his WW1 great
grandfather’s bugle used on the Western Front. Private Alfred Charles
Elliott served on the Western Front in France, was injured from
Mustard gas, hospitalized in London and returned to the Front as a
messenger and stretcher-bearer. Nathan (16) from Hornsby is a Yr
11 Senior Prefect at St Leo’s Catholic College, Wahroonga and also
wore his grandfather’s WW1 medals and webbing belt with some 60
collected regimental badges.
The Hornsby service was broadcast live by our local Radio station
Triple H 100.1 FM.
At the Hornsby service I met up with fellow Navy Vietnam Veteran,
Harry Farrant (Hornsby Heights). We both served in the troop carrier
HMAS SYDNEY alias the ‘Vung Tau Ferry’ 1971-73. At the time
Harry was an ERA2 (Engine Room Artificer) and I was a POQMG
(Petty officer Quarter Master Gunner). We were also both cross
trained as Ship’s Divers. Harry has a digital copy from an 8mm
camera recording of us both conducting diving operations and scare
charges explosions in Vung Tau Harbour. Where’s my copy Harry?
On the previous Sunday, 22 April at 11am, like Berowra, Hornsby
had held an ANZAC Parade & Service which included a planting of a
‘Lone Pine’ at the Hornsby cenotaph.
After the Hornsby Dawn Service I attended the 7am Wahroonga
Service with 1950s ‘Nashos’ (National Servicemen): Lester Lovell
(Berowra) and my ‘home town’ fellow resident and Neighbourhood
Watch colleague Trevor Courtney (Mt Colah). The 3 of us then went
on to the 8:15am Turramurra Service and from there to the City of
Sydney ANZAC Parade.
Yes, we all survived another ANZAC Day.

RAN who is a Berowra resident
serving in Kabul
On ANZAC day at Kabul air base
the Australian contingent, of around
50 personnel, gathered around a
memorial to pay their respects to fallen
comrades’ and to commemorate
ANZAC day. The simple ANZAC
service was also attended by members
of the NZ, UK, US and Turkish armed
forces. After addresses, on behalf
of Australia by MAJGEN S. Day,
and Turkey by MAJGEN V. Sunal,
Chaplain Thomas led the assembled
parade in prayer. Then, to the faint
sounds of ‘Abide with me’, wreaths
from Australia, New Zealand, The
United Kingdom and Turkey were
laid along with a wreath representing
all serving nations at ISAF based in
Kabul. The ceremony concluded with
the reading of the Ode to the fallen by
LCDR D. Jeffs RAN, the last post and
a two minutes silence whereupon the
Australian National Flag was hoisted
close up.
