Experience Queensland’s backyard 

Cape York 

Located on the northern most tip of Australia, Cape York Peninsula is 

a wild and sparsely populated wilderness area that is only accessible 

during the dry months from April to December. Cape York's rugged 

northern coastline faces towards Papua New Guinea while the 

eastern side is fringed by the coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef. 

Cape York is a vast area and a land of extremes; 115,000 square 

kilometres of untouched wilderness, magnificent national parks, 

sacred Aboriginal sites, beautiful rainforest, rugged mountains and 

swampy marshlands. Following the Old Telegraph Track north, the 

dusty tracks contrast dramatically with the abundant rivers, crystal 

clear creeks and spectacular waterfalls. 

You'll be amazed by the 40,000 year old tradition and culture of the 

Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. Trek to ancient Aboriginal rock

How to Get There 

BY AIR 

Cairns is the gateway to Cape York and the Gulf Country and has direct flights daily from 

Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and Townsville. Direct flights are also available on 

selected days from Adelaide and Perth. Weipa and Horn Island have daily flights from 

Cairns with QantasLink. Longreach, in the heart of the Outback is serviced by QantasLink 

daily from Brisbane. MacAir operates flights to Longreach from Townsville via Winton twice 

weekly. Mount Isa has daily flights from Brisbane with Qantas. MacAir operates direct flights 

to Mount Isa daily from Townsville and five days a week from Cairns. Charleville has direct 

flights twice weekly from Brisbane with MacAir. We have access to airfares with Virgin Blue, 

Qantas, QantasLink, Jetstar, MacAir and most other airlines. Ask your travel agent to find 

the best available airfare for you.

Queensland Rail offers a choice of services to Cairns and Queensland’s Outback. The 

Inlander operates between Townsville and Mount Isa, The Westlander connects Brisbane to 

Charleville and the Spirit of the Outback is the iconic rail journey between Brisbane and 

Longreach. The Sunlander and Tilt Train service the coastal regions between Brisbane and 

Cairns. See page 10 for further details on Outback rail journeys.

WHAT TO BRING 

Lightweight clothing is suitable all year round; however 

bring something warm as the temperature drops at night 

during winter. To ensure adequate protection from the sun 

we suggest you bring a broad-brimmed hat, SPF 30+ 

sunscreen, sunglasses and a long sleeved shirt with a 

collar. On your Cape York and Outback Queensland 

holiday it is also advisable to bring comfortable walking 

shoes, a torch, insect repellent and an adequate supply of 

medications. Finally don’t leave home without your spirit 

of adventure! 

WHAT TO EXPECT 

Outback Queensland and Cape York tours often visit 

remote wilderness and outback areas, with access subject 

to suitable conditions. Itineraries may vary from time to 

time. Whether yours is a camping or accommodated tour, 

the isolation of these areas means that facilities will not be 

exactly like home. 

Typically, your tour will be made up of people of all ages and 

all walks of life. Meals will be simple and sourced from fresh 

foods wherever possible. Meals included in touring 

packages are represented by: B = breakfast, L = lunch, 

D = dinner. Most tour operators will ask that passengers 

rotate seats each day, so everyone has a chance to sit near 

a window or occupy a front seat. On camping safaris, you 

may be asked to help with general camp duties – no 

experience necessary… it’s all part of the fun! 

It’s very important that you telephone your tour operator at 

least 24 hours prior to your tour departure time to reconfirm 

your arrangements. It’s also a great opportunity for you to 

ask any last minute questions. 

Some extended and day tours require a minimum number 

of passengers to operate. It is important to note that tours 

may be cancelled at short notice, if minimum numbers are 

not achieved.

MINIMUM AGE AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS 

The minimum age for drivers of vehicle groups X, A, 

B, C and D is 21 years. Drivers aged 21 to 24 years 

inclusive are required to pay a $27.50 per day 

surcharge (to a maximum of $192.50), which is 

payable directly to Avis at the time of rental. For all 

other vehicle groups, the minimum age for drivers is 

25 years. 

Drivers must hold an open licence and have held 

that licence for at least 12 months.

Cape York 

Cape York is a vast area of pristine wilderness, fertile wetlands and rugged mountains, a land 

of extremes where the creeks run dry or ten feet high. If you love bushwalking, four wheel 

driving, wildlife, fishing, bird watching or camping then Cape York is the place for you. 

Traverse the rugged Bloomfield Track to historic Cooktown and on to Lakefield National Park 

with its abundant lagoons, billabongs and river systems, home to fresh and saltwater 

crocodiles. Discover ancient Aboriginal rock art at Jowalbinna, the epicentre of Quinkan Rock 

Art. Get off the beaten track and cross crystal clear creeks, open woodland country and pass 

giant termite mounds. Swim in the many rock pools and waterfalls including Fruit Bat Falls or 

Twin Falls and camp at an old telegraph station as you journey along the Old Telegraph Track. 

Cross the mighty Archer, Wenlock and Jardine Rivers on the way to the very tip of Australia, 

Cape York and watch as the sun sets over the Torres Strait in a dazzling blaze of colour. Take 

a boat trip across the Torres Strait and explore Thursday and Horn Islands.

Just a few hours drive west of Cairns, lush tropical rainforests give way to an ever-changing 

landscape of open woodlands and savannah grasslands, dramatic volcanic landforms, 

rugged escarpments and cool, fresh-water gorges. Try your hand at fossicking, enjoy 

Barramundi fishing, view the incredible diversity of bird life or enjoy the preserved history of 

the frontier towns. 

At Undara, see the world's longest and largest lava tubes. Explore the historic mining towns 

of Einasleigh and Forsayth, and visit the breathtaking Cobbold Gorge to the south. Tour the 

historic gold mining town of Croydon and travel on board the Gulflander train to Normanton.

Transfer from Weipa Airport north to the Aboriginal 

community of Mapoon, then by 4WD to Camp

by 4WD up and down the 24 kilometres of beach, 

stopping frequently to spot turtles, watch them lay

tenders and going off to harvest native bush honey, or a 

swim in a stunning natural waterhole complete with

Day 1: Cairns to Jowalbinna 

Travel west into the savannah, a 4WD track takes you into 

Jowalbinna, the epicentre of Quinkan Rock Art. Learn of 

the significance of these artworks with an afternoon Rock 

Art Walk. Later relax with a refreshing swim in a bush 

creek. Overnight at Jowalbinna Rock Art Safari Camp and 

relax in the evening around the campfire. (LD) 

Day 2: Jowalbinna to Archer River 

Rise to the morning chorus of Kookaburras, 

Butcherbirds and Blue-faced Honeyeaters. After 

breakfast in the bush visit the historic telegraph station of 

Musgrave before travelling on to Coen. Overnight camp

Day 3: Archer River to Twin Falls 

Travelling north, cross the Wenlock River at the historic

Day 3: Fruit Bat Falls and Bramwell Station

Cross the Wenlock River and head to Weipa on the shores 

of the Gulf of Carpentaria. This afternoon is an optional tour 

Moreton Telegraph Office. 4WD Cape York’s rugged 

Telegraph Track – cross rivers and creeks, see 

prehistoric palms, giant termite mounds and 

carnivorous plants. You'll be enchanted by the magic 

of Twin Falls – swimming here, in pristine spring-fed 

pools landscaped by nature, will be a life long 

memory. Camp here tonight in the company of

Day 4: Twin Falls to Cape York 

Onward across the mighty Jardine River to the 

beachfront campsite on the tropical shores of Torres 

Strait. This afternoon a fascinating visit to the beautiful 

Lockerbie Scrub, an isolated pocket of monsoon 

rainforest before an emotional walk to the very top of 

Australia – Cape York! (BLD) 

Day 5: Cape York to Cairns 

Your adventure safari ends with a flight from Bamaga 

back to Cairns. (B)

Continuing south stop off at Archer River and the

Heading south through the wilderness cross the Wenlock

This morning visit Old Laura Homestead, then step 

back in time at the old gold port of Cooktown. Visit

Travel through Heathlands Reserve and pause at Captain

through the pristine Mungkan Kandju National Park

world. Travel via Moreton Telegraph Station to Bramwell

Range, featuring brilliant colours with views of over 

700 square miles of country. Onto Lark Quarry to see the 

tracks of the only recorded dinosaur stampede in the

HOW TO BOOK 

Call into or phone your Licensed/AFTA/TAANZ/Bonded travel 

agent. We recommend booking as far in advance as possible 

especially for school holidays and other peak periods. 

PRICES AND CONDITIONS 

The prices featured in this brochure are valid from 

1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010, unless otherwise specified. 

Prices are provided as a guide only and may vary due to peak 

demand periods, changes in surcharges, fees, taxes or 

currency fluctuations. You should check all prices, conditions 

and information with your travel agent before making a 

booking. 

Any verbal quote given is an estimate only of the price, which 

will be subject to change until written confirmation of the 

reservation. 

The price of your holiday may change at any time up to 

30 days before your departure if any new surcharges, fees or 

taxes are introduced or if any existing surcharges, fees or 

taxes are varied, even after you have paid all or part of the 

quoted price of your holiday. If we have to change any part of 

your booking for reasons beyond our control, for example, an 

Accommodation Supplier overbooks accommodation, we will 

notify you. If any such changes result in your holiday costing 

more or otherwise being materially different from that originally 

booked, then you may cancel the holiday and we will refund 

any monies already paid less any charges levied by Suppliers. 

Prices are in Australian Dollars and include GST where 

applicable, but do not include transport from your home port to 

holiday destination and return, items of a personal nature, 

meals, transfers and existing or proposed taxes and 

government charges, unless otherwise indicated. 

Prices shown in this brochure are for payments made by cash. 

An additional credit card service fee will be applied to the 

dollar amount paid by credit or charge card. You should ask 

your travel agent to advise you of this fee at the time of 

booking. 

Some Suppliers may impose conditions that vary from the 

conditions stated in this brochure. You should ask your travel 

agent at the time of booking if different conditions apply.

room photographs are representative only and actual rooms 

occupied may vary in décor and inclusions from those shown.

brochure is accurate at the time of printing, Sunlover Holidays 

disclaims and will be exempt from liability in respect of anything 

misleading, false, incomplete or inaccurate and any errors, 

misdescription and all associated disappointment, loss, expense, 

damage, inconvenience, delay, death, shock, illness or injury, 

however caused. 

Sunlover Holidays does not control the manner in which 

Products featured within this brochure are provided. Sunlover 

Holidays disclaims and will be exempt from liability for anything 

to do with the supply of such Products. This includes liability 

(whether as a matter of contract, tort, statute, restitution, or 

otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss, liability, 

claim, cost, expense, proceeding, demand, penalty, 

disappointment, death, injury, illness, shock, inconvenience or 

delay. This limitation of liability also applies irrespective of the 

cause, including negligence of us or a Supplier, withdrawal, 

cancellation or failure to provide a Product, delay, any variation 

in the Product, the provision of substitute Products or a change 

in the Supplier. Without limitation, we will not be responsible if 

the Product is not available due to inclement weather 

conditions or other Acts of God, civil disturbances, fire, floods, 

acts of Government or any other authorities, accident to or 

failure of machinery or equipment or industrial action. 

DEPOSITS AND FINAL PAYMENT 

IMPORTANT BOOKING CONDITIONS 

Excluding the Outback Rail Tour 

Deposit 

A minimum deposit of $55 per adult or $110 per booking, 

whichever is the greater, is required within 7 days of 

confirmation of your booking, unless otherwise advised at the 

time of booking. Some Suppliers may impose deposits in 

addition to the minimum deposits stated in this brochure. A 

deposit holds services but does not guarantee prices. 

Final Payment 

Full payment of your holiday cost must be made no later than 

45 days prior to travelling for Heritage 4WD Tours, Oz Tours 

Safaris and Wilderness Challenge, and no later than 30 days 

prior to travel for all other tours and accommodation, or by sale 

end date, or by the payment deadline specified in individual 

package conditions, whichever is earliest. For bookings made 

inside these dates but more than 7 days prior to travel, full 

payment of holiday cost must be made within 24 hours of 

confirmation of your booking. If the booking is made 7 days or 

less prior to travel, full payment of holiday cost is required at 

the time your booking is confirmed. 

Outback Rail Tour 

Deposit 

A non-refundable deposit of $220 per person is required 

within 7 days of confirmation of your booking. A deposit holds 

services but does not guarantee prices. 

Final Payment 

Full payment of your holiday cost must be made no later than 

60 days prior to travel, or by sale end date, or by the payment 

deadline specified in individual package conditions, whichever 

is earliest. For bookings made 60 days or less prior to travel, 

but more than 30 days prior to travel, full payment of holiday 

cost must be made within 24 hours of confirmation of your 

booking. If the booking is made 30 days or less prior to travel, 

full payment of holiday cost is required at the time your 

booking is confirmed. 

Please ensure payments are made within the specified time limits. 

If this does not happen, our computer system automatically 

cancels the booking without notice or liability to you. 

Only upon payment of the full cost of your holiday do you have 

a final booking with the Supplier of the relevant good and/or 

service. In arranging your booking, Sunlover Holidays is acting 

as the agent of the Supplier of the relevant Product and at no 

time do you have a contract with Sunlover Holidays. 

MINIMUM BOOKING REQUIREMENT 

Bookings of less than $150 will incur a service fee of $27 per 

booking. 

AMENDMENT FEES 

Any amendment to your booking is subject to the approval of the 

relevant Supplier. Any approved change to your booking prior to, at 

or after making final payment will incur an amendment fee of $27 

in addition to any fees imposed by the Supplier. 

LATE BOOKINGS 

A fee of $20 will be charged for any late booking which 

necessitates documents being forwarded by Registered Post, 

Express Post or Courier. 

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS 

Prior to final payment: There will be no refund of your deposit in 

the event you cancel your booking prior to final payment. However, 

the deposit less an amendment fee may be used towards a 

deposit on another Sunlover Holiday if booked and travelled within 

12 months from the date of cancellation of the original booking 

(not available for Outback Rail Tour bookings). 

After final payment: There will be no refund of your deposit, 

in addition to any fees imposed by the Supplier, which may be 

up to 100% of monies paid. However, the deposit less an 

amendment fee, may be used towards a deposit on another 

Sunlover Holiday if booked and travelled within 12 months 

from the date of cancellation of the original booking, provided 

the supplier does not impose a cancellation fee. 

For Outback Rail Tour bookings, a 100% cancellation fee 

applies unless the seat is resold. If the seat is resold, payment 

will be refunded less your non-refundable deposit. 

CHILDREN’S PRICES 

In most cases, children’s prices for accommodation featured in 

this brochure refer to children occupying the same room/unit 

with at least two adults and using existing bedding. Additional 

charges will apply if extra beds (including rollaways and cots) 

are required. Prices for any other combination of children and 

adults should be obtained from your travel agent. 

BONDS 

Bonds or credit card imprints are required by Car and 

Campervan Hire Suppliers, Yacht Charters and by most 

Accommodation Suppliers at the time of check-in to cover 

incidentals and fees not included in your holiday cost. Other 

bonds may apply at certain times of the year. Check with your 

travel agent prior to booking. 

AIRFARES 

A number of airfares can be used in conjunction with your 

holiday package. All airfares are subject to availability and 

many have special conditions that apply. In most instances full 

payment of the airfare will be required at the time of booking. 

TRAVEL INSURANCE 

Sunlover Holidays strongly recommends travel insurance as it 

may protect you if you cancel your holiday due to unforeseen 

circumstances. Ask your travel agent for details. 

TRANSFERS 

Some Accommodation Suppliers provide courtesy transfers 

from airports/railway stations. It is essential that these 

transfers are pre-booked. Some Tour Suppliers provide 

complimentary pick up and return to your holiday 

accommodation. This service must be confirmed with the 

Supplier 24 hours prior to departure. 

All transfer prices are subject to increase. 

CHANGES TO THE RAIL TOUR ITINERARY 

Sunlover Holidays reserves the right to amend, change or 

delete portions of the tour itinerary without notice or liability to 

you. We also reserve the right to change the mode of transport 

utilised on the tour. 

TOURS 

Some tours require a minimum number of passengers to 

operate. If minimum numbers are not achieved tours may be 

cancelled at short notice. Additionally, some Suppliers reserve 

the right to cancel departures for other reasons. Some tours 

and itineraries may also vary and attractions may be 

substituted due to seasonal conditions. Sunlover Holidays will 

not be held liable for a service variation, cancellation, delay or 

withdrawal, or a Supplier’s failure to notify you.
