Robert A. (Bob) Bryan
honored at reception

Robert A. (Bob) Bryan was honored at a reception on October 22, 2011 for his
contributions to the George A. Smathers Libraries Leadership Board. Bryan, former
interim president of the University of Florida (1989-90), joined the leadership board
in 2004 and continued to provide leadership and service to the libraries through
2010. His contributions to the board included lobbying and advocating the vital role
of the UF Libraries in academic success and excellence. His long-time association
with UF and the libraries are greatly valued and appreciated.
Bryan viewed his service on the library leadership board as an avenue to find people
who want to support the libraries. “I’m impressed by the quality of the people on
the board. It’s one of the most impressive boards that we have (at UF). I’m very
optimistic that we will do some good,” he said while serving on the board.
The reception was attended by Bryan’s friends and family members who paid tribute
to him by sharing anecdotes and memories of him through the years. The libraries
presented him with a plaque to be placed under one of the restored windows in the
Smathers Library Grand Reading Room.
Bryan’s children Lyla and Matthew initiated the Robert A. & Kathryn W. Bryan
Library Fund in April 2011 to honor their parents. The fund supports the purchase
of library research materials and books for English literature to benefit UF students,
faculty, staff and researchers.

Speaking out

But wait! There’s more to be done!!!
We have all been opportuned – usually
on TV and now more recently through
the Internet – to buy into what is
claimed to be a bargain: Two for the
price of one; new and improved and
double the quantity; just pay shipping
and handling. If not completely
satisfied, (double) your money back!
Too good to be true? Too often not
true enough to be even partially good.
In this, my first essay as the Library
Leadership Board’s ‘president,’ I want
to begin by acknowledging all the
good and positive work that the Dean
of Libraries, the Associate Dean for
Advancement and Development
and other members of the libraries’
staff have garnered for the Smathers
Libraries. Having been both a former
administrator within the libraries as
well as its interim Development Officer
on several occasions, I understand only
too well the metaphor that if the head
does not lead, the body will not go
where it should. I also believe strongly
that leaders can only be successful if
they are willing and able to do what
they ask others to do.
Library student assistant scholarship winner
Kristina Wilson, a senior from Miami, Florida, was awarded the fall 2011 James and
Leslie Rutherford Library Student Assistant Scholarship. Wilson works at the Auxiliary
Library Facility (ALF) in a variety of capacities including cataloging, copy cataloging
and upgrade cataloging.
She is an English major with a minor in art history. Wilson curated the exhibition
“Anomalies and Curiosities of the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature”
in the Special Collections gallery of Smathers Library August 1-September 15, 2011.
The $500 scholarship is awarded during the fall and spring semesters to a student
assistant employed by the Smathers Libraries.

We are looking right into the face of
the conclusion to the University of
Florida capital campaign. With little
more than a year to go, the libraries are
standing on a precipice for our portion
of the campaign: do we stop where
we are, almost make our goal and
rest content, avoiding a drop into the
precipice of failure? Or do we gather
speed and leap the gap that separates
us from our success?
We are the many friends of the libraries
who have contributed time, influence
and substance to help us reach our goal
of $20 million: members of the board
(past and present), members of the
libraries (staff and librarians), faculty,
students, alumni and many other
supporters have enabled us through
monetary and in-kind gifts to reach at
present 82 percent of our goal. We have
achieved this level of success because
we have honored and memorialized
family and friends by naming windows
in the Smathers Library; some of us
have created endowments that support
not only the collections but the services
that our students, faculty and friends
have come to rely on for their work; we
have used the books of honor program
for family,
friends and
those we admire.

administrators,
alumni and
collectors have
generously
given us gifts of

resources would be much the poorer.
Tom Woodell, our board’s immediate
past president, included in his final
report the words: “…continuing efforts
and annuity-like support are critical
to the ongoing ability of the libraries
to meet the needs of the other various
academic programs on the campus of
the University of Florida.” It will be my
goal, in concert with the board and the
libraries, to bridge the gap that remains
and achieve a successful conclusion
to the libraries’ part of the capital
campaign.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF
Alfred Browning Parker

On September 23, 2011 the
Architecture Archives in the
Department of Special and Area
Studies Collections hosted a special
event and reception honoring the
architecture of renowned architect
Alfred Browning Parker. Parker’s
architectural career spanned seven
decades and he was one of Florida’s
most prolific and influential midtwentieth
century modernist
architects. He was greatly influenced
by Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Organic
Architecture” and was the only
architect Wright recommended as an
American Institute of Architects (AIA)
Fellow—an honor that “recognizes
architects who have made a significant
contribution to both architecture
and the greater society, achieving a
standard of excellence in architecture
at both a local and national level.”
The celebration featured a lecture
and book signing by Randolph C.
Henning, author of the new book, The
Architecture of Alfred Browning Parker:
Miami’s Maverick Modernist, and a
special viewing of Our Pacesetters, a
Members of the Alfred Browning Parker family stand to be recognized.
documentary film by Holly du Rivage.
Two special exhibitions were also
featured: “Alfred Browning Parker:
A Life’s Work,” and an exhibition by
graduate students from the UF School
of Architecture, “Digital Interpretations
of the Regional Architecture of Alfred
Browning Parker.”
The author, Randolph Henning,
delighted the Parker family, friends and
architecture students with his personal
memories of Alfred Browning Parker
during their eighteen year relationship
while writing the book, and filmmaker
Holly du Rivage spoke of her family’s
relationship with Parker as he designed
her family home and the lasting impact
he made in their lives. Especially
memorable were the personal accounts
from family members who spoke of
the lasting legacy of Alfred Browning
Parker as an architect and beloved
husband and father.
The Director of the School of
Architecture, Martin Gold, and
professor Guy W. Peterson spoke
of Parker’s architectural influence
on the next generation of architects
and invited the audience to view the
detailed analyses done by the students
in the exhibition. John Nemmers, the
descriptive archivist who worked closely
with Parker in processing his collection,
shared the importance Parker placed
on the education of future architects by
providing them access to documents of
our built heritage.
Parker was instrumental in establishing
the Architecture Archives in the
Smathers Libraries when he deposited
his architectural collection at UF, and
the Architecture Archives has now
become the leading repository in the
state of Florida for the preservation
and scholarly research of Florida’s
architectural heritage.

Cruise the Caribbean with
the Panama Canal Museum
The Panama Canal Museum, which is in the process
of transferring its collection to the University of
Florida, is sponsoring two fundraising cruises in early
2012 and invites the University of Florida community
to come along.
An 11-night cruise on Holland America’s Zuiderdam
on January 16-27 will depart from and return to Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida, visiting the Bahamas, Aruba,
Bonaire, Curacao, Panama and Costa Rica. $100 off
group fare prices is being offered museum members,
and family membership in the museum is only $26.
The 7-day Exotic Western Caribbean cruise on NCL’s
Norwegian Star leaves from Tampa, Florida on March
4 and returns on March 11. Excursions to Mayan
ruins will be available in several of the ports, which
include Roatan, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; Costa
Maya, Mexico and Cozumel, Mexico. Onboard events
are being planned. Fares begin at only $469. Special
prices are available to AARP members and retired
military personnel on a space available basis.

Library supporter Richard Carris talks
about his passion for the libraries
Richard Carris (UF ’79), an avid Smathers Libraries
supporter, suggested the Academic Sport Challenge program
for football and basketball to the Smathers Libraries in 2009.
Chapter One editor Barbara Hood asked him recently about
his enthusiasm for the libraries.
Chapter One: How did the idea of the Academic Sport
Challenge begin?
Carris: It was during the Florida/Ohio State BCS National
Richard Carris
Championship game that my son asked why not have alumni
contribute money to the library every time the Gators score a
touchdown. I thought about this for a few seconds and said, “well, that is a great
idea”. This gave birth to a football campaign challenge, Pay-for-Performance,
where one pledges any dollar amount per touchdown. (It has subsequently been
renamed the Academic Sport Challenge.) We have had support from Urban Meyer,
Will Muschamp and for a similar basketball three point challenge, Billy Donovan
and Amanda Butler. It is teamwork between the UAA and UF Libraries.
Chapter One: What was the stimulus for you to become involved with the UF
Libraries?
Carris: It actually goes back to the days I was a student in the late 1970s. For
more than 30 years, while working in NYC financial services, I have continued
an investment in my own human capital via education…this all began in Library
East (now called Smathers Library).
The most important contributor in my pursuit of continuing education has
been the hours invested at the UF libraries. The memories of being engaged in
study, research and meeting other students while enjoying the ultimate collegiate
experience is why I became involved with UF libraries.
Chapter One: Why do you have a passion for UF and for the libraries?
Carris: I view the libraries as the other Swamp. In this sport of learning the
competition takes place every day in the classroom with the championship
during final exams. You ask why I have a passion for the UF libraries; well think
of it compared with Gator football:
The duration of the sport I talk about is actually more extensive than any other
Gator sport. It includes thousands of hours of practice (study) over years until
one reaches the ultimate end zone – graduation.
Chapter One: What are some other ways that you support the UF Libraries?
Carris: I am an active member of the George A. Smathers Library Leadership
Board and will fulfill a five year pledge. My other way of supporting the
libraries is via active in-person participation such as trips to Gainesville to the
Stakeholders Weekend.
My father-in-law, Irving Glass, recently began translating Yiddish newspaper
titles to English for the Price Library of Judaica under the leadership of collection
head Rebecca Jefferson.

Libraries create
catalog of digital
historical newspapers

The Catalog of Digital Historical
Newspapers (NewspaperCat) is
available at www.newspapercat.org.
NewspaperCat is an online database
providing links to over 1,000 full-text
digital newspapers in the United States
and Caribbean. The project’s current
coverage, which began with the South-
eastern United States, is growing rapidly
and will soon cover all fifty states.
NewspaperCat
improves access
to historical
newspapers
digitized by
libraries, archives,
historical
societies and
other non-profit
organizations that
remain buried within search engine
returns such as Google PageRank.
These newspapers represent a rich
source of primary research material
for researchers, students and the
general public. The project to build
NewspaperCat was funded by the
George A. Smathers Libraries and
developed with the cooperation of
the Digital Library Center of the
University of Florida.
As a free-standing online resource with
a unique web address, it is hoped that
NewspaperCat will be able to improve
access to these important primary
resource materials by collectively
improving their Google PageRank for
online researchers seeking historical
newspaper content.
NewspaperCat will become the first
index of its kind to ingest and provide
access to the Google News Archive as
well as newspaper titles from across
the United States and Canada.

Gator Rocks Jewelry fundraiser for libraries

In August, the George A. Smathers
Libraries hosted a preview of Mark
Loren’s GATOR ROCKS Jewelry
Collection at Cru restaurant in Fort
Myers, Florida. Several Gator fans
braved stormy weather to attend the
kick-off of this collection of custom
jewelry.
There were several stunning pieces,
including this pendant donated by
Loren for a raffle at the event. Loren
is an award winning custom jewelry
designer and will donate a portion
of the proceeds from the sales of all
GATOR ROCK pieces to the UF
Libraries. Several thousand dollars
were raised during the event.
Loren also meets with clients to design
custom pieces. Anyone interested in
seeing more of the GATOR ROCKS

Dean’s message
This year has been an exceptionally
productive and busy year at the
Smathers Libraries. We are excited to
offer new services, new partnerships
and new space to enhance the research
and educational experiences of faculty,
students, staff and researchers. A few of
them I will share with you:
We have joined the HathiTrust, a partnership
of major research institutions
and libraries working to ensure that the
cultural record is preserved and accessible
long into the future. There are more
than fifty partners in the HathiTrust,
and membership is open to institutions
worldwide. Currently, the HathiTrust
has 8.9 million digitized volumes.
Books that are in-copyright whose
owners cannot be identified or located
to give permission for digital access
are called “orphan” works. As a result
of its participation in the HathiTrust,
users of the UF Libraries soon will
have access to digital versions of some
of the thousands of orphan works held
in print by the UF Libraries that are
also available in the HathiTrust Digital
Library. These works will be fully
searchable, viewable and accessible to
UF students and faculty wherever there
is a connection to the Internet, and of

course, the print copy remains in the
libraries if needed.
The UF Libraries have made available
UBorrow, an unmediated interlibrary
loan service that allows current
students, faculty and staff to borrow
books directly from participating state
university libraries when they aren’t
available at UF.
The libraries recently acquired online
access to several collections of streaming
videos that offer a wide variety
of content for academic use. Because
streaming videos are viewed online,
users do not need to spend the time to
check out from the library to watch.
The subjects range from counseling
and therapy, education and opera, to
human culture and behavior. Users can
access the collections 24/7 to watch full
videos or short segments, anywhere an
Internet connection is available.
We have reclaimed a long hallway in
Smathers Library and turned into a
quiet study area with comfortable seating
and tables. We are always looking
for additional spaces for study areas.
An online reservation system is now
available for the 14 group study rooms
in Library West and one in the Educa-
tion Library. The
system makes it
more convenient
for students to
reserve the rooms
in advance and
assure it will be
waiting for them
when they need
to use it.

we are diligently doing everything we
can to optimize our existing services,
materials and facilities while responding
to the needs of patrons to add what
we can to enhance their research and
education. We are coming into the final
year of the Florida Tomorrow comprehensive
campaign at the University of
Florida. The libraries have reached 82%
of our goal of $20 million. We are most
appreciative of those donors who have
helped us achieve this goal and look
forward to realizing it by the end of
