Corrective role of the oocyte<br />

An <strong>in</strong>tact DNA does not appear to be a prerequisite for a successful fertilization as<br />

proven by the ability of <strong>ICSI</strong>, to yield satisfactory fertilization <strong>and</strong> pregnancy<br />

outcomes with compromised semen parameters, or immature spermatozoa such<br />

as those retrieved from the epididymis or result<strong>in</strong>g from a compromised<br />

spermatogenesis such as testicular specimens of non‐obstructive azoospermic<br />

men.<br />

These f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs highlight the role of the oocyte as<br />

more than just a source of maternal DNA <strong>and</strong><br />

nutrients to the presumptive conceptus, but also<br />

a contribut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tricate mach<strong>in</strong>ery that can undo<br />

the damag<strong>in</strong>g effects of a faulty male genome.<br />
