<strong>The</strong> distant ship fired a gun to leeward, sending<br />

up a cloud of antarctic skuas from a dead<br />

and drifting whale.<br />

'<strong>The</strong> enemy has fired a leeward gun, sir, if<br />

you please,' reported the signal midshipman.
