Heading into his fifth season<br />

leading the Golden Bears, Mark<br />

Mauer, the 2005 NSIC Coach of<br />

the Year, has accumulated a 25-20<br />

overall record while guiding CU to<br />

a 17-13 mark in the Northern Sun.<br />

Mauer was able to lead Concordia<br />

to a Northern Sun championship in<br />

just his second year at the helm of<br />

the program as the team finished<br />

tied for a school record in wins,<br />

finishing 9-3 overall while going 6-<br />

1 in the conference. The season<br />

was highlighted by the program’s<br />

second trip to the Mineral Water Bowl. The Northern Sun title and the<br />

Mineral Water Bowl berth were each accomplished for the second time<br />

in three years in 2005.<br />

In his first season with Concordia, Mauer led the team to a 7-4 overall<br />

finish, including a 4-3 mark in Northern Sun action. The final record<br />

doesn’t tell the complete story of the success the team enjoyed, as<br />

Mauer had the Bears a win away from their second consecutive bid to<br />

the Mineral Water Bowl, as they fell a touchdown shy in their final game<br />

against conference champs Winona State in the Metrodome Classic.<br />

The Golden Bears have recorded at least a .500 record in the NSIC<br />

seven times since they joined the league eight years ago in 1999, a<br />

streak carried over by Mauer’s teams in his three seasons with the<br />

program.<br />

Mauer became Concordia’s ninth head coach prior to the 2004 season.<br />

He took over a program that was the defending Northern Sun<br />

Intercollegiate Conference Champs. Mauer's storied career has taken<br />

him from the front steps of St. Paul Harding High School to Nebraska<br />

to Indiana to New Mexico and back to Minnesota again.<br />

At the University of Nebraska, he was a two-sport athlete as a standout<br />

in both football and baseball. He played three years of quarterback for<br />

the Cornhuskers, earning Tom Novak Most Valuable Offensive Player<br />

Award as a team captain in 1982.<br />

His coaching experience began in 1984 as a quarterback and receivers<br />

coach at Ball State (1987-1991) in Muncie, IN. From there he moved<br />

on to the receivers coach position at the University of Wisconsin. He<br />

took on much of the recruiting efforts, covering much of the east coast.<br />

In 1992, Mauer stepped off the<br />

sidelines and onto the state capitol<br />

floor, where he worked for six years<br />

as a Minnesota legislative<br />

assistant. During that time, he<br />

worked to research and present<br />

legislature. In 1997 he was named<br />

a city council member in St. Paul.<br />

Aside from serving the city by<br />

managing a 350 million budget, he<br />

oversaw legislation that negotiated<br />

safer streets and schools in the city<br />

of St. Paul.<br />

Mauer returned to coaching in 1997<br />

at North Dakota State University, in<br />

Fargo, N.D. There he served as quarterback and receivers coach as<br />

well as taking on offensive coordinator duties for the Bison. In 2000,<br />

Mauer was named the receivers coach at New Mexico State University,<br />

in Las Cruces, N.M.<br />

In 2003, Mauer accepted the head coaching position at Concordia<br />

University. His coaching staff blends several previous coaching<br />

colleagues from New Mexico State and Nebraska, as well as other top<br />

coaches from the coaching field.<br />

Mauer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1977. He earned a<br />

degree in education from Nebraska in 1982. He graduated from<br />

Harding High School in St. Paul, Minn., in 1977 where he competed in<br />

football, basketball and baseball. In 1997, Mauer was inducted to the<br />

St. Paul, Minnesota Hall of Fame.<br />

He is married to the former Jennifer Graham of Omaha, Neb. They<br />

have three daughters, Mia, Marlo and Macy.<br />
