Moonlight Passage - ENTERPRISE Dep<strong>art</strong>s Cleveland in 1834 12 x 16, Oil on canvas RAYMOND MASSEY Fellow, ASMA The ENTERPRISE was built in Cleveland in 1825 and was instrumental in accelerating the growth of Cleveland as she brought immigrants west to this booming town. By the mid-1830s the ENTERPRISE was an old boat for the Lake Erie passenger trade as a few years earlier numerous larger, faster steamboats came into service. This view shows her dep<strong>art</strong>ing the Cuyahoga River, looking towards the foot of Superior Street. 39
40 JOHN STOBART Fellow (Emeritus), ASMA Sacramento: The Celebrated River Steamer CHRYSOPOLIS Leaving for San Francisco in 1870 20 x 32, Oil on Canvas This painting shows Sacramento in 1870. The town had already burgeoned into what is now Old Sacramento in only 30 years and this reaches some eight blocks in from the riverfront. The CHRYSOPOLIS turns in midstream to begin her seven-hour passage to San Francisco. To the right a working towboat maneuvers a barge with its own wheelhouse and laden with sacks of farm produce to an upstream wharf while square riggers and schooners rest at their berths.
