Chasm 14.5 x 14, Oil on Panel This painting was started on location overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Monterey. I developed it to a fairly high degree before leaving the site as I knew that I wanted to develop it into a finished combination en plein air/studio painting. I am adamantly opposed to introducing photographs into my art, so it is important that I leave the location with as much information as possible, giving me the freedom to translate what I have recorded into a work of art. 26 LAURIE REGAN CHASE Signature Member, ASMA Commissioned by the Chicago Yacht Club for the 100 th running of the Race to Mackinac official magazine cover, the painting depicts a blustery finish through the Straits of Mackinac, MI. The winds are often fickle, from the sustained violent storms of 1911, 1937 and 1970, to the expected midsummer’s pleasant zephyrs and drifters.
