USS ONEIDA Off Fort Niagara, c. 1813

This is a view of one of the first purpose-built warships manufactured by the U.S. Navy on the Great Lakes. Built in
1810, the ONEIDA was a brig armed with 16 guns and used throughout the War of 1812. She is shown approaching
the mouth of the Niagara River on Lake Ontario, an area guarded by Fort Niagara. She is accompanied by the
USS SCOURGE, a merchant schooner converted to a gunboat.
