Overview<br />

DROP DOCUMENTS<br />

When GET retrieves an SPSS-format data file, or when ADD FILES, MATCH FILES, or<br />

UPDATE are used to combine SPSS-format data files, all documents from each specified file<br />

are copied into the working file. DROP DOCUMENTS is used to drop these or any documents<br />

added with the DOCUMENT command from the working file. Whether or not DROP<br />

DOCUMENTS is used, new documents can be added to the working file with the DOCUMENT<br />

command.<br />

Basic Specification<br />

The only specification is DROP DOCUMENTS. There are no additional specifications.<br />

Operations<br />

Example<br />

• Documents are dropped from the working data file only. The original data file is<br />

unchanged, unless it is resaved.<br />

• DROP DOCUMENTS drops all documentation, including documentation added by any<br />

DOCUMENT commands specified prior to the DROP DOCUMENTS command.<br />

GET FILE=GENSOC /KEEP=AGE SEX EDUC MARITAL CHILDRN MED_INS.<br />

DROP DOCUMENTS.<br />

FILE LABEL General Social Survey Subset.<br />

DOCUMENT This file contains a subset of variables from the<br />

General Social Survey data. For each case it records<br />

only the age, sex, education level, marital status,<br />

number of children, and type of medical insurance<br />

coverage.<br />

SAVE OUTFILE=SUBSOC.<br />

• DROP DOCUMENTS drops the documentation text from file GENSOC. Only the new<br />

documentation added with the DOCUMENT command is saved in file SUBSOC.<br />

• The original file GENSOC is unchanged.<br />
