This is the first large-scale effort to articulate the nature of cl<strong>in</strong>ical and<br />

ethical expertise <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g. The project was truly a community effort. We<br />

are especially grateful to Alan Trench and his colleagues at the Helene<br />

Fuld Trust for catch<strong>in</strong>g our vision for this project and fund<strong>in</strong>g it for<br />

4 years. Many doctoral and master’s students contributed to the work at<br />

both the University of California, San Francisco, and the Oregon Health<br />

Sciences University.<br />

At the University of California, San Francisco, students and colleagues<br />

were <strong>in</strong>tegral to the completion of this work. Barbara Habermann,<br />

Daphne Stannard deserves special recognition for her consistent<br />

contributions <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g the project cohere and stay organized dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

latter phases of writ<strong>in</strong>g and manuscript preparation. Kathy Horvath and<br />

Janet A. Secatore also have our thanks for contribut<strong>in</strong>g to long-distance<br />

data-collection efforts. We also had able staff assistance from Karen Allen,<br />
