Greetings Parents and Friends of WHHS!
Welcome to the beginning of another successful year at Wade
Hampton High School. As the 2007-08 year begins, I am looking
forward to the successes and challenges that will become a very
memorable year, especially for our senior class. They are the first
graduating class to have the benefits of the Freshman Academy, and it
has made a tremendous impact on their success.
The academic, arts and athletic improvements continue each
year, making Wade Hampton the high school of choice for many
Greenville County students. While pushing forward with our goals for
high standards, we want students and parents to feel secure in the
consistency of a positive common school culture that continues to
create the same high expectations of students each year. In fact, we
believe Wade Hampton High School is deserving of Carolina First
Palmetto’s Finest recognition.
We continue to be proud of our new building and the many
improvements that have been made in our landscape. The Fine Arts
Center has been a great complement to our already outstanding arts
program. Our academic standing and test scores have reached new
heights in many areas, and our teacher and student attendance has
also climbed. Our Athletic Director will serve on a national level this
year, bringing more recognition to our great athletic program.
Wade Hampton not only started the school year with a
beautiful building and grounds, but we also have several new faces on
campus. Over the summer we were able to add several highly talented
teachers to our already excellent faculty. We are fortunate to have
Janet Peebles and Margie Thomas in English, Leslie Casey in French,
Jayson Aviles in Special Ed., and Beth Schach and Nathaniel
Swindall in Science. We have Nichelle Newton as a part-time
Guidance Counselor and P.J. Mauro as a part-time Freshman Success
teacher. We also have a new SRO Reuben Black, ISS teacher
Christopher Nall and Assistant Principal Jada Kidd. These new
teachers and staff members, as well as our existing faculty members,
will serve our students and our community well.
Our parents and community play an important role in
maintaining the high expectations. I encourage parents and our
community to become involved at Wade Hampton. Please support our
students during the school year as they participate in academic, fine
arts, athletic programs and competitions.
President’s Message
The 2007-2008 school year is already off to a tremendous start! For those
families returning to Wade Hampton High School, welcome back. If you are new to
WHHS, I hope the first few weeks for you have been exciting, fun, and not-toostressful.
Whether you are brand new or have been around for years, I encourage all of
you to get involved at our school and in the PTSA. On the state and national level,
PTA’s mission is as follows:
• To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the
community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make
decisions affecting children;
• To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their
children;
• To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation.
Right here at WHHS, our PTSA is hard at work bringing parents, students,
school staff, and the community together to share ideas about programs that benefit
our children. We are very proud that the PTSA at WHHS is strong, active, and very
relevant.
And that is actually where each of you comes in. Joining the PTSA is a great
start (see page 3 for more on membership). But I encourage you to each give a little
of your time. Get involved in the WHHS family. We have many, many ways you can
get involved and make a difference—and most only take an hour or two. You can
complete a volunteer form (sent home earlier with students), or if you prefer, just
contact Tammy Foster, our Volunteer Chairman (ensemom@yahoo.com) or me
(hite@nuvox.com) and we’ll help you get started!
Another way to get involved is to attend a PTSA board meeting. All meetings
are open to all PTSA members (you don’t need to be on the board!). If you’d like to
join us, our upcoming fall meetings are October 29th and November ____. All
meetings begin at 5:30 pm in the Media Center.
Last, thank you to everyone serving on the PTSA board this year. I am
fortunate to work with such an outstanding group…all working to make WHHS an
even better place for our kids.
Warmly,
Susanne Hite
Let’s Spread the ‘Shine…
Do you know somebody who needs a little sunshine in their life? If so, email
Lydia Scharlau at lscharla@greenville.k12.sc.us or lydia203@charter.net indicating
“sunshine request” in the subject box giving the name and a reason (not detailed) so
an appropriate card may be sent to this individual or individuals. Really bad day,
injured, hospitalized, death in their immediate family, great accomplishment, award,
etc…these are all great reasons to spread a little sunshine around Wade Hampton.
Over 100+ happy customers to date and still going…
Guidance Corner
Note from the editor: Some of the following information is outdated, for which we apologize.
The newsletter was delayed due to circumstances beyond our control.
The guidance department would like to welcome Nichelle Newton, Elbert
Parks and Tonya Vaughan.
Mrs. Nichelle Newton completed her internship with us this past spring and is
a new ½ time counselor. She will be working with students taking virtual classes,
twilight classes and students that need homebound services. Her phone # is 355-0229.
Mr. Elbert Parks is our new Career Development Facilitator. Mr. Parks will be
working with ninth grade students in completing career assessments, choosing a
career cluster and, in the spring, a major. His phone # is 355-9184.
Mrs. Tonya Vaughan is our new clerk. She began working this summer and
will assist us with school records and enrolling new students. Her phone # is 355-
0104.
From Mrs. Salahudin-Bolden, our freshman counselor:
Hello, parents and Wade Hampton High school alumni! All freshmen attended
the "Making High Schools Count" assembly on Friday, Sept.7th during 4th
Block. This program highlighted good study habits, the rewards of working hard
academically, and getting involved in activities during the four years of high
school. Later in the month, Mrs. Salahudin-Bolden will be going into Global Study
and AP Human Geography classes to review high school graduation requirements as
well as eligibility criteria for state funded scholarships. Freshmen will learn the
importance of high school courses and GPA as it relates to post-secondary education
opportunities. Please monitor your freshman's school work and assignments to help
ensure their smooth transition into high school. My phone # is 355-0121.
From Mrs. Angela Massingille, our sophomore counselor:
Students need to begin looking at colleges and making sure they are taking the
correct classes for the college they wish to attend. Parents are requested to call Mrs.
Massingille for an appointment to meet with me and make a four year plan with their
student. This will assure the student is on the correct path for his/her future. My
phone # is 355-0118.
From Mrs. Jane Gay, our junior counselor:
In September, I visited English 3 classes to orient students to the SAT exam,
and the PSAT National Merit Competition. The PSAT exam is scheduled for Oct.
17th, 2007 and costs $13.00 for juniors. Juniors who wish to take the PSAT need to
go by guidance and pay. (Please have exact change or a check payable to Wade
Hampton High School). The deadline to register is Friday, October 12 th . The College
Fair will be held at McAlister Square on September 30th and is open to parents and
students. We will take 11 th and 12 th grade students to the college fair on Monday,
October 1 st . I look forward to working with you and your student. My phone # is
355-117.
From Mrs. Louise Jordan, our senior counselor:
For seniors everything goes very fast this year. We are already right on one
important deadline and that is taking the SAT or ACT to get that score you need to be
accepted to college or earn that scholarship. Sept. 10th is the deadline to apply for the
Oct. 6 th SAT and Sept 21st is the deadline to apply for the Oct. 27 th ACT. Remember
any college will accept either test. Don’t put this off. Many colleges require that you
apply with full qualifications by Nov. 1st to be eligible for their more prestigious
scholarships. That means that you should be getting your applications in order and
asking your teachers and others for letters of recommendation when it is required.
I will be sending a letter home very soon to give you more information about
timelines. Students should also check their school email to keep up to date with
current information about deadlines and scholarships. If parents will send me their
emails, I will put you on my distribution list to receive information. My email is
lojordan@greenville.k12.sc.us and my phone # is 355-0196.
Welcome to WHHS
Hi, I am Beth Schach. I teach Biology. I graduated from
the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Biology, and I received my Certificate of Teaching from
Clemson University. In my spare time I enjoy reading and
spending time with my friends, my husband, and my dog. I love
to play games and watch sports, especially college football! I
am an interactive teacher and I like to use a variety of teaching
methods in my classroom. My goal is to teach science and to
allow students to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Please
visit my website at http://teachers.greenville.k12.sc.us/sites/jschach.
Hi, my name is Nathan Swindall. I teach chemistry and
physical science. Before I accepted my job here at WHHS
I received my BS in chemistry and teaching certification
at the University of Virginia's College at Wise in Wise,
VA. I just moved to the Greenville area from rural
southwest Virginia. This is my first year at Wade
Hampton High School and thus far I am having a
wonderful experience. When I'm not teaching I really enjoy outdoor activities such as
hiking, camping, backpacking, fishing, ...etc. I also sing and play guitar. I feel my
responsibility to my students is to provide encouragement and inspiration along with
instruction. While taking one of my courses you can expect a mix of traditional and
inquiry teaching styles. As I am a brand new teacher at WHHS, my website is still
under construction. Once it is completed, you may visit it to find out more
Eastside Week
Leading Like Generals 1960-2007 7

Eastside Week
Eastside Week History
Eastside Week will be here before we know it! The dates this year are
October 19th through October 26th. WHHS will host a spaghetti dinner, silent
auction, Bingo night, "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" and many other fun and
exciting events. Of course, we want to BEAT EASTSIDE, but did you know how all
of this got started?
In the 1970's, Wade Hampton's main rivalry shifted from Greenville High
School to Eastside High School. The "Raider Roast" was replaced with the "Eagle
Roast" and the Generals became rivals with the Eagles, officially. In the late 70's, as
the rivalry grew, it became less and less friendly, with incidents of vandalism and
damage to both schools. What might have been good-hearted pranks escalated on
both sides into damage to both schools. Finally, student leaders and administrators
gathered together to channel the rivalry into a common good--a contest to raise
money purely for charity. That is how it all began. To this day, Eastside Week raises
money for worthy causes every year with recent totals nearing almost $200,000. This
year's charity for Wade Hampton: HOMES OF HOPE.
An interesting bit of Trivia--David Barnett (WHHS SIC Chair) began
something called the crowning of the "Poultry Queen." In 1976, David, then the
Student Body President of Wade Hampton, ushered Buddy Turner out onto the field
at halftime of the JV game to crown him the first "Poultry Queen." Buddy was seated
on a toilet throne and handed a plunger scepter! This concept has grown into the
Poultry Pageant, which now brings in thousands of dollars for our worthy charity.
It is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of Eastside Week. The many
events and activities are terrific. However, when the Generals WIN THE CONTEST
this year, remember that it all started with the purpose of turning what could have
been negative into a wonderful gift for a worthy cause. GO GENERALS!
Attention PTSA Volunteers!!!!
There are a number of containers, platters, crock pot, baskets and bowls in the PTSA
room left by many very nice moms who have baked delicious food over the past three
years. We cannot thank you enough for your help, and we know a great deal of
thoughtfulness and caring went into each and every dish. However, if you would like
to reclaim your dish(es), please see Lydia Scharlau in the office at WHHS. She will
be able to open the PTSA office so you can retrieve your dishes.
Wade Hampton Applies For Carolina First
Palmetto’s Finest Award
Since 1978, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators
(SCASA) has recognized a few schools which offer excellent instruction and
outstanding leaders, augmented by strong family and community involvement and a
supportive business community. Initially presented only to two elementary schools
and one middle school, the award was expanded in 1997, with the support of Carolina
First Bank, to include one high school. The selection process includes a
comprehensive review of a school’s program, focusing on the key question: “What
impact is this school making on the lives of students and the community?”
The initial recommendation for Wade Hampton to apply as a Carolina First
Palmetto’s Finest school came from the School Improvement Council (SIC) during
the 2006-07 school year. The requirements and the application process were reviewed
and discussed with the SIC, the faculty, the PTSA, the students, and with our
community. It was the opinion of all that Wade Hampton High School could qualify
as an award winning school. A committee of 25 members representing all of these
groups was formed. This large committee was divided into sub-groups and began
meeting regularly when school started. Their work has been to gather information and
write about the achievements in the past few years at Wade Hampton High School.
The application is a 20 page document describing these things about our
school:
*General demographic information
*List of awards and recognitions
*Student achievement data and analysis
*School culture information (student involvement and leadership; safety and
physical environment; community involvement and communication)
*Instructional program (core curriculum, instructional methods, innovative
programs, use of technology and career emphasis)
*Faculty and Staff information (staff quality and professional development)
*School leadership (vision, philosophy and the stakeholders involved)
The application is due in October. After submission of the application,
independent readers will evaluate and recommend semifinalist schools for initial site
visits. Members of the SCASA Palmetto’s Finest Awards Committee will visit
schools in November and December. From that visit, finalist schools will be selected
and a second visit from this committee will occur. If Wade Hampton High School is
selected as a finalist, we will be invited to the Koger Center in Columbia in March
2008, for the announcement of winners.
We feel that Wade Hampton High School excels and is deserving of this most
prestigious award. If you have information that could be included in the above areas
of the application, please contact Ginger Stuart (355-0116 or
gstuart@greenville.k12.sc.us).
French at WHHS
Leslie D. Casey
Parlez-vous français?!
This year in French class our focus is on speaking! From day one the students
were hearing and speaking French in situations that mirror real-life uses of the
language! Teaching is focused around 4 thematic units that relate to the real world
and authentic use of the language (Who am I? My friends and I? How have I
changed?). The students are excited and interested in learning French and finding out
about French teenagers and their world!
I have made contact with a school in Rouen, France and another in San Pédro,
Côte d’Ivoire, and students will be corresponding with teenagers from those countries
and will be able to put to use what they are learning in the classroom!
November 5-11, 2007 is National French Week, sponsored by the American
Association of Teachers of French, and is a time to promote the study of the French
language and to highlight the contributions made by the Francophone world in areas
such as food, science and technology, the Arts, and Sports; some interesting and
educational activities are planned for this week!
While Christmas seems far away, I am working out details to have the French
students learn some authentic French carols, learn about the holiday traditions in
France culminating in a visit and presentation at Paris Elementary School and League
Academy. Additionally, I am hoping to be able to visit a local Retirement community
to share some holiday cheer à la française!
Vive le français!
In Mrs. Mitchell’s English I classes,
students have been very busy. English I
Honors students have completed a
biographical writing piece, read The Old
Man and the Sea, and analyzed their EOC
diagnostic tests. In addition, they have
been practicing reading and literary
analysis strategies daily with their poetry
and informational text starters. Several
students have won the weekly journal
award, and winning entries have been
published in a class notebook. English I
students have also written biographical
introductions about their classmates,
practiced sentence combining, and used reading strategies for nonfiction texts. These
students are currently reading Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street. They
presented group research on the author and her background and composed emails
about an article they read called “My Purple House.”
English Department News
Did you kick back and read this summer? The Generals did! Over 200
students participated in the voluntary summer reading program, “Kick Back and
Read.” Students could choose books from a list of recommended favorites or any
other book that caught their interest. Of the students that participated, 114 attained
the Private level for reading one book, 21 students reached the Major level for
reading two books, and 76 students read three or more books to show that they really
are Leading Like Generals. Students succeeding at the Private and Major levels will
receive goody bags in the coming weeks, and all General level students will receive
treats and admission to a very special performance by Wade Hampton’s great
Houdini, Mr. Bounds. Thank you to everyone who participated, and keep Reading
Like Generals!
What’s going on in the English Department?
Seniors in Mrs. Atkins’ classes have been busy already this year, completing
their first major paper and group project. Group skits got the students out of their
seats and into the subject.
Ms. Hall’s English III Honors students have been writing villanelles, and will
soon begin work on their individual portfolios. The subject of the portfolio is “All
About Me.”
The English Department will once again host the Warehouse Theater’s
Wooden O. The Wooden O is an arts integration program that brings Shakespeare
off the page and into the classroom. A team of actors will be visiting Wade Hampton
in October to lead workshops on Romeo and Juliet, giving students a low pressure
opportunity to truly experience Shakespeare’s work.
English teachers Ms. Hall and Mrs. Mitchell have been busy representing
Wade Hampton in the district and in the state. The two worked together on a
curriculum team to develop the Accelerated Reading course this summer, and will be
presenting at the Writing Improvement Network’s fall conference. Ms. Hall will be
presenting “Personality Plus: Using Literary Point of View for Writing Voice
Lessons.” Mrs. Mitchell’s workshop will feature “From Denzell to Dante: 10 Minute
Starters that will Rock Their Socks.” Wade Hampton was the only school
represented by two speakers in the conference brochure that went out to all schools
in the state.
Karen Moyd's Teacher Cadets of WHHS are currently
working working on their "Big Book" project for 3
and 4 year olds. The Instructional Resource Center in
Greer has graciously allowed the cadets to use the
Ellison dye cuts for this project. The theme of the
books is valuing diversity. Soon the project will be
completed so that the Teacher Cadets may share their
productions with the 3 and 4 year olds at White Oak
Kindergarten.
Ms. Leavitt with Mike Fossum, astronaut and
Mission Specialist on STS 121 and 124.
Beth Leavitt, science
department chair, spent 11 days
in San Francisco learning a new
curriculum called Voyages
Through Time. This program
was sponsored by the SETI
Institute, Search for Extra
Terrestrial Intelligence. She did
not find ET but met many
renowned scientists such as Jill
Tarter, the female model of
Jody Foster in the movie
Contact and Frank Drake who
wrote the equation that
calculates the number of
civilizations in the universe we
could potentially “talk” to. Ms.
Leavitt also was a special guest of NASA at the launch of STS-118 at Cape Canaveral
this summer. Her association with NASA and her work in the Network of Educator
Astronauts has taken her to many space facilities including Tsukuba, in Japan. The
successful flight of Endeavor carried Barbara Morgan, the first teacher to space.
Expect to hear her students talk about space and watch the ISS or Shuttle Orbiter fly
over at night. You can visit her at Roper Mountain Science Center every other Friday
night giving planetarium talks.
The National Honor Society of Wade Hampton High School would like to announce
the senior executive council for 2007-2008. The 49 seniors voted for Parliamentarian:
Elise Acree, Secretary: Danielle Brower-Lingsch, Treasurer: Sarah Jo Willis, Vice-
President: Kelly Clarke, and President: Alex Britt. All of these fine students are
excellent representations of what WHHS Generals are and are planning to help move
NHS forward. The reasons one becomes a member of National Honor Society are
based on four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service and character.
Students must maintain a cumulative 3.8 GPA. Many of these students have already
proven themselves to be leaders in their church, at scouts, volunteering, in sports, or
in other clubs and organizations. All members commit themselves to at least 10
service hours each school year and many go beyond. In addition WHHS has been
host and NHS has taken the lead at our school in Relay For Life, raising money for
American Cancer Society. Wade Hampton High is only as good as the people that
make up its population. Their character, on and off campus, is a product of constant
action, daily striving to make the right choices. We are proud of WHHS senior NHS
members: Elise Acree, Emerson Allen, Mindy Blackmon, Michael Brigeman, Alex Britt,
High School teachers Jeff Graham of Windsor Forest High, Savannah, Georgia, and
Karen Moyd of Wade Hampton High, Greenville, South Carolina, were selected to
participate in the research grant opportunity "Bottoms Up," written and directed by
Dr. William Savidge. Funds for this endeavor are supplied by the National Science
Foundation. Margaret Olsen, Education Specialist of COSEE, will be working in
coordination with Dr. Savidge overseeing Jeff and Karen's efforts to enhance
educational opportunities in oceanographic exploration for K-12 teachers around the
nation. Thus far, Jeff and Karen worked four days in Dr. Savidge's land lab to prepare
filters, identify specimens taxonomically, and prepare for offshore deployment of
research devices needed for gathering samples. Upon their sail on Monday July 16,
2007, work was bountiful. Benthic samples were gathered from 12 AM until 5:00
AM on Tuesday and Wednesday morning as
well as 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Equipment
utilized included a 6m plankton net and
benthic sled both towed by the 93 ft RV
Savannah owned and operated by UGA.
Additionally on Thursday, core samples were
obtained from a depth of 25 meters. As a part
of the adventure, Jeff and Karen were active
participants in cleaning the Attenuated
Doppler Profiler which was retrieved by Dr.
Harvey Seim of UNC Chapel Hill. There was
never a dull moment as expert Marine
Biologists, Geochemists, and Master divers
graciously shared their knowledge. Jeff and
Karen Moyd preparing the plankton
tow line for deployment
Karen look forward to continuing with the Bottoms Up project with a second at sea
cruise in the summer of 2008 and then sharing their finds with science teachers across
the state.
While many students were on vacation or
relaxing, six students from My Brother’s
Keeper (MBK) Male Mentoring Program spent
two weeks at Clemson for a Summer
Leadership Camp. July 29- August 10, Deon
Rhodes, Michael Roberts, Dylan Suber,
Brandon Gossett, Jabriel Ware,and Garfield
Woods were taught skills regarding certain
character education traits such as loyalty and
teamwork. As part of a new character education
grant (Teen Lead) provided by the State
Department of Education, these students will take these traits and apply them in a
program at Wade Hampton High School.
Beginning in October, MBK and Teen Lead will sponsor “Enrichment
Sessions” each month. These sessions will be open to the student body between 3:45-
4:45pm. Topics such as “How Education Impacts Employment,” “How to Make and
Manage Money” and “Image in the Workplace” will be showcased. Guest speakers
will be brought in to inform the students of issues that are relevant to them and their
future. If you have any questions regarding these sessions or the mentoring program,
please contact Corey Collington.
AFJROTC
Successful Summer for JROTC Cadets, Now
Ready for 07-08!
Wade Hampton’s Air Force JROTC cadets completed a very busy but
successful summer. Five cadets graduated from the South Carolina Cadet Officer
Leadership School at The Citadel in June. Cadets Adger Brown, Travis Williams,
Ashley Gentry, Kevin Hinnant, and Shanai Leopard successfully passed the week
long crucible in Charleston. Every morning they arose at 5:30 am, performed
calisthenics to include pushups and situps, ran a mile, prepared their room and
uniforms for daily inspections, practiced and commanded marching drill routines,
attended leadership classes and played volleyball. Their “normal” day ended at
10:30 pm each night. Each cadet was assigned to a different flight of about 25
cadets each. They learned even more about working as a team under stress with
many different cadets. The entire class was composed of 250 cadets from as far
away as Singapore in the Far East and all across the United States, including
Minnesota, Florida, Tennesee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina,
Virginia, as well as schools in South Carolina. Adger Brown, a previous leadership
school distinguished graduate from Wade Hampton, was assigned to the upper class
cadre of cadets who were responsible for inspecting and leading the “basic” cadets.
Brown was also assigned to the school’s color guard as the lead rifle bearer. Each
cadet will now assume leadership positions in the cadet corps at Wade Hampton.
Two cadets, Lyle Weed and Kris Durdick, attended Air Force Junior ROTC
aerospace technology honors camps in July. Weed attended camp at the University
of Oklahoma and Durdick attended at the University of New Mexico. Cadets
Durdick and Weed were among 500 cadets selected from 2000 nominees
worldwide and who represent the top one half of one percent of the approximately
110,000 Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) cadets worldwide. Durdick had a
4.26 GPA at the time of his nomination to the selection board and Weed had a 3.94
GPA. The Secretary of the Air Force initiative orients selected AFJROTC cadets to
aerospace technology educational opportunities and aerospace related careers
through a “hands-on” curriculum including visits to college campuses, air and
space operational units, research labs, historical sites, aerospace industries, research
and technology centers, museums, and provide each cadet with an incentive flight.
Additionally, the cadets heard lectures from general officers, astronauts, and pilots,
and participated in simulator and airplane flights. By the way, both Weed and
Durdick also represented Wade Hampton this summer at the Palmetto Boys State
encampment in Columbia! Cadet Weed was also selected for the West Point
Leadership Award at Wade Hampton’s Awards Night last May.
Ten new cadets successfully completed the WHHS AFJROTC Summer
Orientation or SOARS program. The cadets gave up a week of their summer in late
July and early August to receive an orientation in JROTC procedures and cadet
conduct, leadership concepts, drill, sports, and uniform wear and grooming. They
took several tests, including a final exam. They also participated in a drill
“knockout” and they won their volleyball competition against the upper class
cadets! Several cadets won honors in the program. Allie Rodgers was selected
Honor Graduate and received a superior performance ribbon after she finished first
overall in drill, academics and leadership. Cadet Daniel Lee won the drill knockout
competition and a drill competition ribbon as a result. Kristina Bracewell, JoAnn
Griggs and Mary Hill finished first in academics with all perfect scores on their
tests and received an academic ribbon for their performance.
In addition, throughout May, June, and August several cadets gave up their time to
present the national and state colors at Greenville Drive home baseball games. Master
Sergeant Ken Clere and Cadet Lt Col Michael Brigeman led the JROTC color guard
to kick off several Drive home games. Thanks to all those cadets who participate in
the color guard which is really an honor guard. They gave their time last year to
participate in 18 color guard/honor guard events such as Veterans’ Day and Memorial
Day ceremonies and WHHS home football and basketball games.
Our JROTC cadets now look forward to a busy but successful year 2007-2008. They
will be led by a new cadet key staff. Cadet Colonel Lyle Weed is the corps
commander. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Michael Brigeman is the Operations Squadron
commander and Cadet Lieutenant Colonel AJ Brown is the Mission Support
Squadron Commander. All three will lead the corps as it takes on four drill meets
(two this Fall at Clemson and at JL Mann High School), a JROTC Headquarters
inspection in December and community service and many other events and programs
throughout the year. If you have any questions about JROTC please visit our website
at http://www.wadehamptonjrotc.com, or Colonel Varn’s website at http://
