Message from the Principal
Greetings Parents & Friends of WHHS!
As the first nine weeks of school ends for 2007-2008, I would like to
take this opportunity to update you on a few of the happenings at
Wade Hampton. The students are living the maxim, “Leading Like
Generals” with overwhelming successes in many areas. There is
always something productive and exciting happening at Wade
Hampton High School as we strive for excellence through rigor,
relevance and relationships.
Eastside Week
Congratulations and Thank You to all of the Generals that
participated in our 29th annual Eastside Week. Led by our Student
Council, WHHS raised $137,809.72 for Homes of Hope. This is to
date the largest amount of money generated during Eastside Week in
its history. I am proud of the teamwork demonstrated by our students,
teachers, parents, and community during this event-filled spirit week.
When you see our students, please take the time to congratulate them
on their efforts.
Carolina First Palmetto’s Finest
November is sure to be an exciting month for Wade Hampton High
School as we prepare for the next step in our quest to be named a
Carolina First Palmetto’s Finest school for 2008. I would like to thank
the parents, students, and faculty members who served on the
application writing team and an extra big “thank you” to Mrs. Katie
Allen for the love and polish that she applied to the final product.
Not surprisingly, the selection committee was impressed with our
application and awarded us with a site visit. It will take place on
November 29th.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
Adequate Yearly Progress, the method used by the federal
government to assess our school’s standing with the requirements of
the No Child Left Behind Act, was released on October 30. Letters
were sent home to parents about AYP both before and after the
release date. Additionally, links to these letters can be found on our
school web site. We worked very hard and are very proud of our gains from last year.
Every subgroup showed gains in both ELA and Math. Unfortunately, because one
subgroup did not show a large enough gain in one area, we did not meet the objective.
This year, Wade Hampton High School met 18 out of 19 objectives.
MAP Testing
In this age of accountability, it seems that every month brings with it a testing
window for some area. In September, all freshmen completed the Measures of
Academic Progress (MAP) assessments in the areas of Math, Language Usage, and
Reading. These assessments are designed to measure academic growth in these areas
and provide the teachers with valuable information about their students. Selected
sophomores were tested in Math in preparation for the spring HSAP. MAP testing
will be completed again in March 2008.
SAT Preparation
October brought with it the first SAT test of the year. Students who were scheduled
for the October 6th SAT participated in the 3 hour review session offered at WHHS
on Friday, October 5th. The FREE review sessions are offered every Friday prior to
an SAT administration and this year are scheduled for Oct 5th, Nov 2nd, Nov 30th,
Jan 25th, and Feb 29th. Also available to assist students with SAT preparation is The
Official SAT Online Course provided to us by the College Board. More information
about this FREE online course can be obtained in the guidance office. In addition to
the school-sponsored review sessions and the Online SAT Course, this year
Greenville County Schools purchased a subscription to Learning Express Advantage.
This web-based program is designed to help students improve their scores on highstakes
tests (including SAT and AP) and can be used by all students at home or in
school. All teachers have information about this program as well as usernames and
passwords for the students.
End Of Course Exam Program (EOCEP)
Students who are currently enrolled in Algebra 1, Biology 1, Physical Science, and/or
US History will complete the End Of Course (EOC) exam for the course between
December 10th and 19th. These state-written final exams are taken by all students in
South Carolina who are enrolled in one of the above-mentioned courses. The exams
will count as 20% of the student’s final grade in the course. Students should begin
preparing for these EOC’s now.
2008-2009 Registration
The Student Registration Process for 2008-2009 begins in February.
On February 11th, at 6:00 pm, the annual Parent Curriculum Night will be held in the
WHHS auditorium. During this event, we will share information with you to help you
understand the process and to assist your child as he/she registers for courses for the
coming school year. We hope you will join us for this informative evening.
Beginning on February 14, the counselors will review high school graduation and
college admission requirements in presentations made to all 1st block classes.
Students will receive an updated copy of their transcripts, registration forms and a
course guide. They will also review the student online registration process.
The parent/student Portal will open on February 25th to allow parents and students to
make course selections online. Students and parents will be able to view the courses
the teachers have recommended and to make their selections for their elective
courses. If you do not understand the recommendation of your child’s teacher, you
will want to contact that teacher for more information about the recommendation. If
after talking with the teacher, you disagree with the teacher’s recommendation, it is
your prerogative to complete a Parent Override form and have your child placed in
another course. Your child’s guidance counselor can discuss this procedure with you.
Starting February 26th, the counselors will meet individually with students during
their first block classes to discuss course selections and the specific requirements that
remain for the student’s graduation. It is important that students make selections that
will best prepare them to reach their goals.
On March 17th, a finalized copy of your child’s registration form will be sent home.
Both student and parent must sign this form and return it as soon as possible to the
guidance office. Schedules can not be finalized until the signed registration form is
turned in.
If you need access to a computer for this online process, there are several options. All
public libraries offer free computer online access. Additionally, the WHHS Guidance
Department is open between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm, and has computers that you can
use for registration. Access is available at other times by appointment.
Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s guidance counselor for assistance or if
you have questions about the student registration process for the coming school year.
Principal Intern
Principal Intern Experience
Someone once said that perception is reality. In hindsight, I now know that old adage
of not judging a book by its cover is unquestionably true. When I arrived at Wade
Hampton High School on August 1, 2007, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard
several things through the grapevine about Wade Hampton, and most of those things
did not accentuate the positives of the school. I can vividly remember my second
(2004) Eastside versus Wade Hampton High School football pre-game ceremony.
Both student bodies converged on the football field to form a human tunnel to usher
in each school’s team. As I stood at mid-field on the Eastside Eagle logo to keep the
student bodies separated, I was pre-judging the nameless student faces of Wade
Hampton. As they jumped up and down and chanted G-GE-GENE-RALS, I was once
again pre-judging them in my mind based on things I had previously heard about the
school and its students.
Currently, I serve as the principal intern of Wade Hampton High School. This is a
new District initiative designed to provide future administrators with a year-long
work internship. As a principal intern, I work closely with the supervising principal,
Mr. Radford, to learn the ins and outs of how to become not only a manager of a
school, but also the instructional leader of the school. As Dr. Peake (Assistant
Superintendent for Schools) has said on many occasions, assistant principals must
move away from being the “sheriff to becoming the mayor.” Formerly, I served as
assistant principal at Northwood Middle and Eastside High Schools. As an assistant
principal, my responsibility was limited to items delegated to me by the principal. As
a principal, I must become the ambassador of my school. It is the principal’s charge
to take a holistic approach to improve every aspect of teaching and learning. This
internship has opened my eyes in many ways.
I am honored to be a Wade Hampton General. Instead of seeing nameless student
faces screaming at the top of their lungs (2004) as they form a human tunnel to usher
their football team on the field, I see Emerson Allen falling to his knees with joy after
hearing that Wade Hampton raised close to $138,000 for Homes of Hope (Eastside
Week 2007). I currently see a parent, Katie Allen, bidding against me for an African
mask during the silent auction. Ms. Allen had the winning bid for the mask but gave
it to me as a gift. I currently see Ms. Gibson dancing “old school” during the Eagle
Bash. I have not seen a better “Snake” and “Running Man” in my life. Most of all, I
currently see that perceptions are not always reality. I was mistaken in my
preconceived views of Wade Hampton High School. The General Nation is
composed of people who come from different walks of life but who truly love and
care about their school and are proud to call themselves Generals. Without hesitation,
I can say that I am also proud to call myself a General.
“National Honor Society members are expected to continue their exemplary
contributions to the school and community,” said Ms. Beth Leavitt, chapter adviser.
The Wade Hampton High School Chapter has been active in community service
projects such as Relay For Life. Last year they raised more than $4,300, to be
honored as a Gold Level group.
The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national
organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in three-fourths of the nation’s
high schools and, since 1921, more than 10 million students have been selected for
membership. Thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior
members since 1945 by the sponsoring organization, the National Association of
Secondary School Principals.
Social Studies Department
All of the Advanced Placement social studies department offerings have been
submitted to the College Board for approval and have received approval from the
College Board for AP accreditation. AP Human Geography, AP World History, AP
US History, AP Macro- Economics, and AP Government were part of the nationwide
course audit and all of the courses teachers were approved and their classes given the
AP designation. Mr. Blackmon, Mr. Nance, Mrs. Bamonti, Mrs. Williams, and Mr.
Zeller all are designated by the College Board to take this accreditation with them to
any school where they teach.
In a continuing effort to improve the departments teaching efforts, several teachers
attended a Southern Regional Workshop in Spartanburg on October 26th. Mr.
Blackmon attended the AP Human Geography workshop, Mrs. Bamonti and Mrs.
Williams attended the AP US Government workshop and Mr. Zeller attended the AP
US History workshop. Mr. Zeller also attended a workshop on Nov. 9th and 10th for
the National Humanities Center’s Toolbox for Teachers to help with instructional
practices for preparation of the students for the EOC US History test.
Mrs. Bamonti is currently working with her Youth in Government club to get bills
ready to attend the Model General Assembly in Columbia soon. There are currently
18 students participating in this outstanding program. They will be attending the
Model General Assembly from Nov. 29th though Dec. 1st. This is truly a hands on
experience to learn about how state government works and how our democratic
system functions.
Any student that is going to be going to be 18 before the next election in 2008 can
register to vote now and participate in the South Carolina Presidential primaries in
January. This opportunity to have your voice heard is coming soon. Please see the
Wade Hampton government teachers to get information.
WHHS Book Club
Wade Hampton High School has inaugurated a Book Club this year for all those
Generals who love to read. The Club meets monthly in the Media Center during lunch
to discuss a book and enjoy lunch. The first selection was “Jude” by Kate
Morgenroth. Students and faculty alike enjoyed reading
this novel and discussing its merits. Plans for future
meetings include choosing books from different genres, a
Book Swap, and a Book Fair. The next meeting will take
place on November 29.
The Book Club is part of a school-wide Reading Initiative
taking place this year. New members are welcome at any
time!
Thanks PTSA!
I want to share with everyone my utmost thanks
for funding several of my grant requests over
the past several years at WHHS. The rock and
mineral sample sets are still in use in Earth
Science, the demonstration models for
Astronomy, and most recently the topography
kits. The students are very thankful as well.
Their classroom experience is much richer with
these and other additions. Here are some
pictures we took just a few weeks ago as they
drew contour lines around a volcano model.
Continue the great work and thank you for your
What’s Happening in Room 220?
Students in Mrs. Atkins classroom are about to begin work on an electronic exchange
with the American International School of Bamako. Students are taking photos of
Greenville, writing about them, and sending them to the students in Bamako, Mali in
Africa. These students, in turn, have sent their photos and writing to Mrs. Atkins’
students. The exchange is called Place, Space, and Position: A Conversation with
Photography. The students will answer such questions as:
How does space relate to individual and community identity?
How do my experiences cause me to see things differently than others?
How does language affect the process of seeing and understanding?
What steps create the most effective way of seeing and understanding?
What steps create the most effective and authentic writing?
Students at the American International School of Bamako are taught by Mrs. Allison
Holsten, a teacher that Mrs. Atkins has known since 1993 when they both began The
Bread Loaf School of English. They have worked together on other projects. The
students are taking their own photos and sending them to Mrs. Atkins via email. To
see the students’ work, check out Mrs. Atkins’ teacher website (follow the link from
the school website), where there will be a link to the photos from both locations as
well as the writing and responding.
Homeless French Students Need Your Help!
Leslie D. Casey
24 high school students (ages 16-17) are coming here from France in February, 2008.
We need to help these young people find homes for their 2-week stay (Feb. 13 - 27).
They will be shadowing their host student while attending a couple of days of classes
at WHHS and they will be going on excursions in the Greenville area (zoo,
Upcountry museum, art museum etc). As a host family, you would make this young
person feel welcome and speak English to him/her, provide a bed or bedroom, meals,
and transportation to and from school on a daily basis for 2 weeks. On the weekend,
the French student would be part of your family, speaking as much English as
possible and would love to visit the area, go to the mall, go bowling, see a movie, or
just do what typical American teenagers do. Please contact Mrs. Casey (355-01444 or
Student Council would like to give a big thank you to the Wade Hampton community
for your support during Eastside Week. We could not have surpassed our goal
without the help of all of our students, teachers, parents, and community members.
Your selfless offering of time and money raised $137,809.72 for Homes of Hope,
providing homes for 27 well-deserving families. Not only did we beat the Eagles for
the tenth straight year, we set a new spirit week fundraising record for the county.
English Department News
The English department has had a very busy fall! The Wooden O led lessons in
Shakespearean drama, culminating in a presentation of Romeo and Juliet. Mrs.
Peebles, Mr. Bounds, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Gibson all participated in this annual
outreach program. With special help from Mrs. Mitchell, the English department has
taken part in two new initiatives at Wade Hampton High School to get students
reading. The WHHS book club has started in the Media Center, where students can
come together and discuss a new selection each month. Students who check out other
great titles from the library have a way to share as well. The new Reading like
Generals program offers students the opportunity to submit reviews of the books they
check out in the Media Center. These reviews are placed in a drawing to be read by
Mr. Radford over the morning announcements. All participants can enjoy a light
breakfast with the principal to discuss the exciting things they have been reading.
Could you figure out the height of a tall structure using only its shadow and a
yardstick? If you carry a scale on a roller coaster, do you expect things to weigh the
same all around the trip? What will happen when a lightweight driver in a bumper
car runs head-on into a heavy driver in another bumper car? These questions and
others were answered by over 50 students from Wade Hampton High School on
October 16, 2007, as they explored the physics behind the State Fair in Columbia.
Ms. Leavitt, science teacher, received a grant from WHHS PTSA to take 16 ESOL
students as well. Many new friendships formed between the ESOL students and the
partner they paired up with from physics. Inertia, forces, momentum, and math were
used in a real life situation all while having fun.
Freshman Academy
Four years ago Wade Hampton High School, along with five other high
schools in the district, received a $300,000 grant to create a Small Learning
Community for our freshmen. We call our community the Freshman
Academy. The Freshman Academy at Wade Hampton High School is
intended to raise the academic challenge for and performance of each ninth
grade student.
Frequently Asked Questions about our Freshman Academy:
Q: What is a Freshman Academy? It is a concept developed during the
1980’s to address the high failure rate among high school students.
Q: What are the characteristics of a Freshman Academy?
Isolation from returning high school students
Additional support for freshmen from a team of teachers and staff devoted to
helping the ease of the high school transition and to improving the success
rate of freshmen
Curriculum integration when possible
Q: What are the benefits?
Smaller learning environments Please contact Mrs. Rowan if you
Effective monitoring of students have any questions or concerns about
Improved attendance rate
your student’s progress.
Reduced discipline problems
Increased parental involvement
Increased performance on state assessments
Q: What are the long term benefits and goals?
Elimination of basic level academic classes
Increased graduation rate
Greater feeling of belonging and responsibility for own education
Increased sense of community
Q: What’s the concern about the 9 th grade failure rate? The average
failure rate among high school freshmen is 20%. Research has shown that if a
student fails the 9 th grade, his/her chance of graduating from high school is
only 5%. This is alarming!
Here are a few of the programs/opportunities included in our Freshman Academy:
• The Freshman Academy has its own guidance counselor, assistant principal, and
Academy coordinator who work only with the freshmen.
• Each academy teacher nominates a student each month to recognize academic
achievement. These students are our Freshman Academy Students of the Month.
• After-School Tutoring is offered to all freshmen in math, English, and science several
days after school each week. In-School tutoring is offered to all freshmen enrolled in
Freshman Success in math and English.
• Freshman Academy teachers meet every other week to discuss students’ needs and
strategies for improving academic achievement.
• Mentoring is provided by the Academy Coordinator to students failing classes.
Concentration is placed on communication, such as letters and phone calls to parents
of students with failing grades throughout the year.
• Students receive quarterly incentives recognizing academic achievement/
improvement.
Have we had success
with our Academy at
WHHS?
From the beginning of our 2003-
2004 school year, the number of
our ninth grade repeaters has
decreased by 72%. Our ninth grade
average grade point average has
improved by 1.06.
Although we have more work to do,
we are very pleased with our
success so far.
On the first day of school, each of our
freshmen received a “Starter Kit,”
which consisted of a 3 ring-binder,
notebook paper, dividers, pencils, and a
highlighter. We are glad everyone got
off to a great start!
The JROTC Awareness Presentation Team helped Lake Forest Elementary School
celebrate Red Ribbon Week on 31 October. Our color guard presented the nation’s
and state’s colors as the entire Lake Forest student body recited the pledge of
allegiance. Then the team conducted a skit which emphasized the importance of not
doing drugs, drinking alcohol and
not smoking. After the program
in the cafeteria, our JROTC team
led Lake Forest in an enthusiastic
parade throughout the campus
outside. Our team was
commanded by cadet Captain
Amanda Harper and was
composed of: Ashley Gentry,
Now JROTC has many activities remaining in the semester, including several
Veterans Day activities, a bi-annual inspection from Headquarters JROTC, our
military ball at the Marriott Hotel, and two community service projects for the
Salvation Army just prior to Christmas. In fact, one of those projects is our annual
food drive for needy families in the Greenville area. Our goal is 10,000 nonperishable
food items, predominantly cans. We’ll conduct the drive 10-17 December.
If you would like to donate any non-perishable food item, please give them to your
child and have them bring them to their first period class beginning 10 December.
Thanks all your help on this very important food drive!
Generals Go to the State Capital
Nineteen Wade Hampton students (grades 9-12) will be going to Columbia, South
Carolina, from Nov. 28- Dec. 2 to run our State Legislature. These students will be
participating in Youth In Government (YIG), a statewide mock General Assembly,
along with over 1,000 other students from around the state. It is a wonderful civic
education and leadership development program sponsored by the YMCA. All
students have written bills they must defend while in session. They will try to have
their bills passed through committee on to both chambers then be signed by the state
Student Governor.
The students will use the actual state house chambers for their meetings and debates.
At night the students will meet with lobbyists and candidates for next year’s governor
and other executive department members. They also will attend a dance and “State
Dinner” where students dress up and mingle with other delegates.
This is a well organized and supervised (USC law students) event. This is the second
consecutive year that Wade Hampton has attended. This event provides an intensive,
hands-on learning experience into the mechanisms and subtleties of the state/national
government process. Please look for pictures on the WHHS website when we return
and consider going next year!
Ann Marie Bamonti
Social Studies Teacher/ YIG Sponsor
Alexandria Britt, a senior at WHHS, was awarded the 2007 Student of Integrity
Award by the Better Business Bureau at their annual Torch Awards and Student of
Integrity Awards Dinner on Thursday, October 18th. This award carries a $1,000
scholarship to be used at the school of her choice.
Bill Baker, German teacher at WHHS, gave a presentation at the Annual Upstate
Meeting of the American Association of Teachers of German on Saturday, October
13th, entitled "Tips on Establishing a Successful German Program Through
Communication with Students and Parents." The meeting was attended by college
professors and secondary teachers from throughout South Carolina.
The Academic Team successfully competed in the North Greenville University
Crusader Cup on October 13 th , representing Wade Hampton High very well. WHHS
had wins over Greer High and Greenville Tech Charter, and a close loss to Aiken
High, who ended up placing second in the tournament.
Fall Sports Season Roundup
Our fall sports teams had very successful seasons and represented Wade Hampton
with the qualities of sportsmanship and dignity that we expect of our athletes and
coaches. Here’s a quick summary.
The Girls Tennis team, coached by Dave Linderman, finished the season with a 6-10
record and finished 4th in the region, a marked improvement over the last several
years. The team was led by All Region selection Haley Harteg.
The Boys and Girls Swim teams, coached by Chris Gibbs, qualified 15 swimmers, 7
girls and 8 boys, to the state championships and had a total of 43 competitors this
year, a significant increase in our numbers.
The Girls Golf team, coached by Vicki Wilson, completed an outstanding year by
finishing 3rd in the Upper State Championships and qualifying for the State
tournament. Most of the girls return for next season and we should be very
competitive again.
The Boys Cross Country team, coached by Rick Zeller, finished 2nd in the Region
and County and 4th in the State Championships. Morgan Bateman was an All State
runner. Morgan and Kyle Keene were All County and All Region selections.
The Girls Cross Country team, coached by Rick Zeller, finished 3rd in the region, 4th
in the County and 5th in the State Championships. Charlee Coggins earned All
Region and All State status.
The Girls Volleyball team, coached by Grant Hunter, completed a successful season
with a trip to the playoffs after finishing the season with a 10 – 5 record. The JV team
was much improved and with most of the team back next year, expectations are high
for another successful year. Emily Champion and Jordahn Shiley were All Region
selections.
The Competition Cheer squad, coached by Keli Dehart, completed their season
competing in the Upper State Championships hosted by WHHS. The girls were much
improved and showed great determination and athleticism.
Football season was highlighted by the Varsity Boys team qualifying for the playoffs
and achieving victories over JL Mann and Greer for the first time in years. The JV
team struggled through a long season with injuries and limited numbers of players,
yet still pulled off a season-ending victory over Eastside in a sweep of the Eagles by
our football program. The C team showed glimpses of the future as they powered
through the season with a 6 and 2 record. Coach Haltiwanger and the entire staff are
to be congratulated for a great season. Congratulations to Jerious Cruell who has been
selected to play in the North-South All Star game in December. 5 Generals were
named All Region.
Basketball and Wrestling are on the way!
WHHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes
FCA is up and running again this year. Monday, November 19, 2007, from 8:00 -
9:00 was our first evening FCA meeting. The evening meetings will be once every
other month. Everyone is invited to hear some great music and to fellowship with
other Christians here at WHHS. FCA also meets every Thursday morning at 7:30
a.m. for free breakfast and more great fellowship. The speakers are mainly youth
pastors from the local churches here in Greenville County. The speakers challenge us
to live more like Christ and how to reach others in need of Christ. We also spend a
great deal of time in prayer for each other and for others around us. FCA is way for
students here at WHHS to connect with other students of the same faith and help each
other to grow in their faith. Last year, FCA was able to raise $2,100 to help a family
in need in our community. FCA students also put together bags of candy to encourage
the faculty, staff and many of the sports teams here at WHHS. We hope to find ways
to serve again here at WHHS. Please come and join in the great Christian fellowship
available here at WHHS! Everyone is invited!
Cross Country
The men's and women's cross country teams ended another successful season at the
state championships on Saturday, Nov. 3rd, at Clemson Sandhills Research Center in
Columbia. The men's team finished 4th, even though 4 new runners to the state meet
were in the final top 7. This marks the 17th consecutive top 5 finish for the men's
team and the 19th top 10 finish. Morgan Bateman, Kyle Keene, Greg Coggins,
Tristan Novak, Andrew Spencer, C.T. Crook, and Derek Winslett all ran very well,
with all 7 under 18:15 at the state meet. All seven also finished in the top 69 runners
out of 170 runners in the 3A meet. Morgan finished 6th to make the All-State team.
Interestingly enough, any of the top 4 3A teams would have finished at least 3rd in
this year’s 4A state championship. With Morgan the top returning 3A runner and the
team returning 10 of the top 14 runners; the team looks to be in contention for the
state championship next year.
The Lady Generals took 3 new participants to the State meet and finished in 6th
place. Charlee Coggins, Leah Carver, Jessica Kirkus, Elisabeth Schlaudt, 8th grader
Madelene Tetsch, Allison Bell and Shelly Hawkins made up the top 7 for the
women's team. All 7 finished under 22:20 for the 5K this year at the state meet. This
was the 11th consecutive top 10 finish for the women's team. Individually, Charlee
Coggins finished 15th and made the All-State team. The team does lose 3 seniors of
the top 8 female runners and looks to several younger runners to step into the top 7 to
help the team reload for another run for the state championship next year.
Several team members will continue to train through November and December under
Coach Zeller's direction to get ready to participate in upcoming AAU, USTAF, and
Footlocker cross country races.
