(2) If the <strong>of</strong>fender is armed with any dangerous or <strong>of</strong>fensive weapon or instrument, or is in<br />
company with any other person or if, at or immediately before or immediately after the time <strong>of</strong><br />
the assault, he uses personal violence to any person, he is liable to imprisonment for life but, in<br />
any case, to a term <strong>of</strong> imprisonment for not less than fifteen years with corporal punishment.<br />
288. Assault with intent to steal<br />
Any person who assaults any other person with intent to steal anything is guilty <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fence<br />
and is liable to imprisonment for a term <strong>of</strong> not less than five years nor more than fourteen years,<br />
with corporal punishment.<br />
289. Demanding property by written threats<br />
Any person who, with intent to extort or gain anything from any person and knowing the<br />
contents <strong>of</strong> the writing, causes any person to receive any writing demanding anything from any<br />
person without reasonable or probable cause, and containing threats <strong>of</strong> injury or detriment <strong>of</strong><br />
any kind to be caused to any person, either by the <strong>of</strong>fender or by any other person if the<br />
demand is not complied with, is guilty <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fence and is liable to imprisonment for fourteen<br />
years.<br />
290. Attempts at extortion by threats<br />
(1) Any person who, with intent to extort or gain anything from any person–<br />
(a) accuses or threatens to accuse any person <strong>of</strong> committing an <strong>of</strong>fence or <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fering or<br />
making any solicitation or threat to any person as an inducement to commit or permit<br />
the commission <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fence;<br />
(b) threatens that any person shall be accused by any other person <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fence, or <strong>of</strong><br />
any such similar act; or<br />
(c) knowing the contents <strong>of</strong> the writing, causes any person to receive any writing<br />
containing any accusation or threat referred to in this subsection,<br />
is guilty <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>fence and if the accusation or threat <strong>of</strong> accusation is <strong>of</strong>–<br />
(i) an <strong>of</strong>fence for which the punishment <strong>of</strong> death or imprisonment for life may be inflicted;<br />
(ii) any <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fences defined in Chapter XV, or an attempt to commit any <strong>of</strong> those<br />
<strong>of</strong>fences;<br />
(iii) an assault with intent to have sexual intercourse with any person against the order <strong>of</strong><br />
nature, or an unlawful and indecent assault upon a male person; or<br />
(iv) a solicitation or threat <strong>of</strong>fered or made to any person as an inducement to commit or<br />
permit the commission <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fences referred to in subparagraph (i) to (iv) <strong>of</strong><br />
this subsection,
