Fly Me to the Moon … or Wherever Ava Is
Sinatra’s Obsession with Ava Gardner
A Tell All Conversation with Lee Wolf & Steven Caras
(A Kravis Center Cultural Society Event)
To really sell a torch song, a singer needs a torch. Frank Sinatra,
master of the love ballad, found his flame in the sultry charms of Ava
Gardner. For three explosive years the crooner and the actress fueled
headlines, fascinated a nation and broke up the furniture with their freefor-all
affair, punctuated by unbridled passion and equal doses of
violence. Forever quarreling over politics, music and, of course, other
lovers, they married in 1951; separated in 1953 and divorced in 1957.
Join Lee Wolf and Steven Caras as they examine this legendary
tsunami of high drama that kept Hollywood gossip columns and fan
magazines humming for years. The lecture will be accompanied by a
video presentation.
Lord of the Dance
Created by Michael Flatley
Described by the New York Post as “fascinating, rewarding and above
all, entertaining,” and by the Los Angeles Times as “a showpiece
extravaganza,” Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional
and modern Celtic music and dance. The story is based upon mythical
Irish folklore as Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal
Lord of Light, the Lord of the Dance. Battle lines are drawn, passions
ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of
dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm.
The action is played out over 21 scenes on a grand scale of precision
dancing, dramatic music, colorful costumes and state-of-the-art staging
and lighting.
Banished: American Ethnic Cleansings
Host: AnEta Sewell
(ArtSmart / Film Offering)
A hundred years ago, in communities across the U.S., white residents
forced thousands of black families to flee their homes or face death.
Even a century later, these towns remain almost entirely white. By
investigating this sad and little-known chapter in American history,
Banished takes a contemporary look at the legacy of racial cleansing.
Through conversations with current residents and the descendants of
those whose land and livelihood were stolen, the film raises the
question of responsibility for past wrongs and what is involved in
righting them. Series concludes on April 4.
A Deadly Deception: The Tuskegee Experiment
Host: AnEta Sewell
(ArtSmart / Film Offering)
Between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service conducted an
experiment on 400 black men in the late stages of syphilis to help
sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, wee never
told they had syphilis, nor were they ever treated for it after the 1940s
validation of penicillin as an effective cure. The utilization of interviews
