on noticing and extracting details from artworks and objects to inform creative writing.<br />

Hints and tips:<br />

Describing from memory and describing from looking directly will produce very different<br />

observations, and it is instructive to compare these.<br />

To render vivid ‘real’ details it is best to describe, for example, an actual umbrella in front<br />

of you, rather than describing it from memory.<br />

The ‘Look At This’ exercise is particularly effective with landscapes, or interiors, without<br />

figures or characters within them. The empty landscape urges us to invent figures and look<br />

for evidence of their presence.<br />

They are more suited to older children and adults.<br />
