• Book transportation well in advance—
particularly air travel into Alaska from
the lower 48.
• Book lodging early: dates fill fast,
especially for our peak visitor season
from May through September.
• Ask your hosts or a reservation service
about locations for your lodging and
get advice on transportation options.
pACKinG FOr SOuTheAST AlASKA
Pack casual, comfortable clothing. We’re
not sticklers about fashion up here. It’s all
about suiting clothes to the activity.
• lightweight shirts layer under sweaters
and jackets; light wool and polyester
fleece are good.
• Pants and shorts, a water-resistant coat
with a hood, and sturdy, waterproof
shoes best fit our changeable climate.
• you may want lightweight
gloves and
raingear for hikes or
saltwater excursions.
Sunglasses and sunscreen
are recommended,
especially
if you’ll be on the
water.
• If you’re prone to
motion sickness, see
a physician before
your trip.
Nominal temperatures are
usually mild in the summer, but
sunshine can create sweltering
conditions. Pack and wear
layers to ensure comfort. Bring
water-repellent fabrics just in
case.

Ketchikan International Airport is on
gravina Island, a five-minute ferry ride
from town.
• Ferries depart from the airport on the
hour and the half-hour; ferries depart
Ketchikan to the airport 15 minutes
and 45 minutes after the hour. On
mid-summer weekdays, departures are
every 15 minutes after 8 a.m. Fares are
$5 for adults and $6 for vehicles one
way. Baggage carts are available.
• Rental cars can be picked up at
Ketchikan International Airport and
in town.
