STORYBOARDING
A storyboard is the visual script of a project in picture form.
A storyboard is a series of images that simply illustrate the movie’s key sequences and scenes.
Each drawing should visually describe a key shot of your sequence (scene part).
The Process ...
1. Work out a concept or idea for your movie
2. Discuss your ideas with your production team
3. Visualise the characters, location and type of shots in your movie
4. Break your story up into parts
5. Discuss and choose the types of shots you will use
6. Think about the length of each shot and how it will work in each sequence of shots
7. Combine the shots to make up the shot sequences in the scene (*see Shot, Sequence, Scene)
8. Draw a representation of each shot on a grid (stick figures are fine)
9. Add a third dimension to your drawings by adding ...
• Symbols – direction arrows, motion strokes
• Speech bubbles
• An indication of the depth and dimension of each shot
• An indication of zoom, pan, dolly, tilt
Check ...
1. Your storyboard against the pitch
2. You have a variety of shots
• Wide (WS)... establishing shots
• Mid (MS)... interaction shots
• Close Up (CU)... emotion, expression shots
• Point of View (POV)
• Action and reaction shots
3. You have a variety of shot angles
• High
• Mid
• Low
4. Action shots are followed by a physical or emotional reaction
5. Against a predetermined set of criteria for evaluation... eg a rubric
