General<br />
As a major manufacturer providing a complete programme of<br />
towing equipment <strong>for</strong> towing vehicles <strong>and</strong> trailers, <strong>BPW</strong> offers<br />
a comprehensive range of products, from the coupling crossmember<br />
to the drawbar A-frame.<br />
<strong>BPW</strong>’s rigorous quality policy guarantees the consistently high<br />
quality of all its products, ensuring maximum safety <strong>and</strong><br />
reliability.<br />
All <strong>BPW</strong> drawbars <strong>and</strong> towing devices are supplied as<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ard with KTL (cataphoretic dip-coating, jet black<br />
RAL 9005).<br />
<strong>BPW</strong>’s quality assurance system has been certified by Lloyd’s<br />
Register Quality Assurance on the basis of the ISO 9001<br />
quality st<strong>and</strong>ard.<br />
To assist vehicle manufacturers, <strong>BPW</strong> provides appropriate<br />
installation <strong>and</strong> operating instructions <strong>for</strong> all products currently<br />
available.<br />
Centre-axle trailers<br />
The EC design <strong>and</strong> approval criteria <strong>for</strong> towing equipment <strong>for</strong><br />
towing vehicles with <strong>centre</strong>-axle trailers, from EC directive<br />
94/20/EEC, have been adopted into national legislation as<br />
compulsory requirements.<br />
<strong>BPW</strong> has now also implemented this directive <strong>for</strong> mechanical<br />
towing equipment <strong>for</strong> <strong>centre</strong>-axle trailers <strong>and</strong> towing vehicles,<br />
to complete its range of running-gear components. This means<br />
that that the towing equipment is now approved in all EU<br />
member states, thus simplifying inspection <strong>and</strong> approval of<br />
vehicles.<br />
As is already well known in the case of drawbar A-frames,<br />
<strong>BPW</strong> provides installation <strong>and</strong> operating instructions <strong>for</strong> all ECapproved<br />
towing equipment.<br />

Fifth wheel trailers<br />
All <strong>BPW</strong>’s st<strong>and</strong>ard drawbar A-frames <strong>for</strong> fifth wheel<br />
trailers from 12 to 48 tonnes have EC approval. In the<br />
case of special designs, the drawbars have type-approval.<br />
As the D-value <strong>for</strong> horizontal <strong>for</strong>ce is needed when<br />
designing <strong>and</strong> obtaining approval <strong>for</strong> fifth wheel trailers,<br />
the D-value is given <strong>for</strong> all <strong>BPW</strong> drawbar A-frames. Any<br />
design that may be required can be supplied, <strong>for</strong> example<br />
with a straight or angled towing-eye, or with adjustable<br />
length <strong>and</strong>/or offset.<br />
Height-adjustment devices<br />
For height-adjustment devices <strong>BPW</strong> offers not only the<br />
normal spring <strong>and</strong> turnbuckle arrangement, but also, in its<br />
advanced Klemmfix 72 design, a user-friendly heightadjuster<br />
<strong>for</strong> the drawbar A-frame.<br />
Where heavier drawbars are used, this can also be<br />
supplemented by the compression spring unit if required.<br />

<strong>BPW</strong> towing equipment with KTL<br />
(cataphoretic dip-coating)<br />
Perfect surface protection –without painting<br />
The cataphoretic electro dip-coating process is one of the<br />
most sophisticated <strong>and</strong> environmentally friendly surfacecoating<br />
processes. Its applications include the coating of body<br />
<strong>and</strong> underside components in car production. Compared with<br />
conventional coating processes, it involves considerable<br />
investment costs. But this expense provides definite benefits<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>BPW</strong>’s customers.<br />
Cataphoretic electro dip-coating (KTL) also satisfies the most<br />
dem<strong>and</strong>ing requirements in terms of corrosion resistance. KTLcoated<br />
<strong>BPW</strong> towing equipment withst<strong>and</strong>s the 504-hour saltspray<br />
test without any difficulty.<br />
KTL-finished surfaces provide outst<strong>and</strong>ing protection against<br />
mechanical influences, <strong>and</strong> as a result scratches do not impair<br />
the resistance to corrosion. The appearance of the finish is<br />
equally outst<strong>and</strong>ing: the thickness of the coating is even over<br />
the whole of the surface <strong>and</strong> it is free from bubbles <strong>and</strong> runs.<br />
Unique complete protection against corrosion<br />
During the cataphoretic electro dip-coating process the<br />
pigments in the KTL paint (positive pole) are deposited on the<br />
electrically charged components or assemblies (negative pole)<br />
in an even layer across the whole surface.<br />
Even geometrically complicated structures <strong>and</strong> cavities are<br />
coated over their whole surface area.<br />
The whole process is automatic <strong>and</strong> computer controlled, <strong>and</strong><br />
can be reproduced at any time.<br />
Can be overpainted with ecologically friendly finishing<br />
coats<br />
Additional finishing coats are unnecessary, but the<br />
manufacturer can accommodate individual requirements in<br />
terms of colour <strong>and</strong> gloss, without any special preparation, by<br />
covering the KTL coating with st<strong>and</strong>ard paint finishes, including<br />
low-solvent <strong>and</strong> environmentally friendly systems.<br />

steering lock of approx 90°.<br />
The <strong>BPW</strong> AB 20-1/G coupling cross-member is intended<br />
<strong>for</strong> external fitting to the towing vehicle. This design enables<br />
overall heights of up to 350 mm, which can be combined<br />
with any internal width (IW) between 758 <strong>and</strong> 916 mm.<br />

depends on dimension CC. The hole pattern <strong>for</strong><br />
fitting trailer couplings, according to DIN 74051/74052, can<br />
be 120 x 55 mm / 140 x 80 mm or 160 x 100 mm.<br />
When you have determined the trailer couplings used, you<br />
can then find the maximum permissible V-value <strong>for</strong> the AB<br />
20-1/G coupling cross-member, in combination with the<br />

the vehicle chassis by means of bolts, as in the fitting<br />
instructions. If required we can also provide the maximum<br />

The most important nominal values <strong>for</strong> towing devices<br />
according to EC directive 94/20/EC can be calculated<br />
as follows:<br />
The V-value must be determined in the case of vehicle<br />
combinations with <strong>centre</strong>-axle trailers, <strong>and</strong> is defined as a<br />
theoretical reference <strong>for</strong>ce <strong>for</strong> the vertical components of the<br />
drawbar <strong>for</strong>ce between the towing vehicle <strong>and</strong> a <strong>centre</strong>-axle<br />
trailer (unit of measurement – kN).<br />
Maximum permissible V-values are given in each case <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>BPW</strong> towing devices, such as the coupling cross-member<br />
<strong>and</strong> the drawbar. The lowest V-value of all the towing devices<br />
used in a vehicle combination is the one that must be<br />
applied.<br />
Mechanical towing devices that transmit noseweight, such as<br />
the drawbar <strong>and</strong> the coupling cross-member (in the case of<br />
<strong>centre</strong>-axle trailers), are to be marked with their maximum<br />
permissible Dc-value.<br />
Mechanical towing devices that cannot transfer noseweight,<br />
such as the drawbar A-frame <strong>and</strong> the coupling crossmember<br />
(in the case of fifth wheel trailers), are to be marked<br />
with their maximum D-value.<br />

Klemmfix 72<br />
The Klemmfix 72 is a height-adjustment device <strong>for</strong> vertically<br />
tilting drawbars.<br />
When set correctly it is possible to achieve infinitely variable<br />
adjustment of the towing eye extending 300 mm up <strong>and</strong> down<br />
from the horizontal position (measured at the towing eye). The<br />
drawbar can be set to the required height single-h<strong>and</strong>ed,<br />
without the need <strong>for</strong> any tools or other equipment. A Klemmfix<br />
72 can only be used to a limited extent as a height adjustment<br />
device without the assistance of a height-maintenance device.<br />
For a drawbar weight of over 75 kg, a height-maintenance<br />
device must also be fitted (such as a tension spring with a<br />
turnbuckle, or a compression spring unit), to take part of the<br />
weight of the drawbar (see diagram). For further in<strong>for</strong>mation,<br />
see the assembly <strong>and</strong> installation instructions.<br />

The tension spring with turnbuckle can be used directly as a<br />
height-adjustment device. The height is adjusted by turning the<br />
turnbuckle. Depending on the tension spring used, one tension<br />
spring is usually adequate even <strong>for</strong> heavy drawbars (see<br />
diagram). In combination with the Klemmfix 72, the tension<br />
spring with turnbuckle can also be used as a heightmaintenance<br />

The compression spring unit is to be used solely as a<br />
height maintenance device, in support of the Klemmfix 72.<br />
The combination of the compression spring unit <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Klemmfix 72 enables optimal height adjustment. Use of the<br />
compression spring unit on its own <strong>for</strong> height adjustment<br />
is not permitted.<br />
