General
As a major manufacturer providing a complete programme of
towing equipment for towing vehicles and trailers, BPW offers
a comprehensive range of products, from the coupling crossmember
to the drawbar A-frame.
BPW’s rigorous quality policy guarantees the consistently high
quality of all its products, ensuring maximum safety and
reliability.
All BPW drawbars and towing devices are supplied as
standard with KTL (cataphoretic dip-coating, jet black
RAL 9005).
BPW’s quality assurance system has been certified by Lloyd’s
Register Quality Assurance on the basis of the ISO 9001
quality standard.
To assist vehicle manufacturers, BPW provides appropriate
installation and operating instructions for all products currently
available.
Centre-axle trailers
The EC design and approval criteria for towing equipment for
towing vehicles with centre-axle trailers, from EC directive
94/20/EEC, have been adopted into national legislation as
compulsory requirements.
BPW has now also implemented this directive for mechanical
towing equipment for centre-axle trailers and towing vehicles,
to complete its range of running-gear components. This means
that that the towing equipment is now approved in all EU
member states, thus simplifying inspection and approval of
vehicles.
As is already well known in the case of drawbar A-frames,
BPW provides installation and operating instructions for all ECapproved
towing equipment.

Fifth wheel trailers
All BPW’s standard drawbar A-frames for fifth wheel
trailers from 12 to 48 tonnes have EC approval. In the
case of special designs, the drawbars have type-approval.
As the D-value for horizontal force is needed when
designing and obtaining approval for fifth wheel trailers,
the D-value is given for all BPW drawbar A-frames. Any
design that may be required can be supplied, for example
with a straight or angled towing-eye, or with adjustable
length and/or offset.
Height-adjustment devices
For height-adjustment devices BPW offers not only the
normal spring and turnbuckle arrangement, but also, in its
advanced Klemmfix 72 design, a user-friendly heightadjuster
for the drawbar A-frame.
Where heavier drawbars are used, this can also be
supplemented by the compression spring unit if required.

BPW towing equipment with KTL
(cataphoretic dip-coating)
Perfect surface protection –without painting
The cataphoretic electro dip-coating process is one of the
most sophisticated and environmentally friendly surfacecoating
processes. Its applications include the coating of body
and underside components in car production. Compared with
conventional coating processes, it involves considerable
investment costs. But this expense provides definite benefits
for BPW’s customers.
Cataphoretic electro dip-coating (KTL) also satisfies the most
demanding requirements in terms of corrosion resistance. KTLcoated
BPW towing equipment withstands the 504-hour saltspray
test without any difficulty.
KTL-finished surfaces provide outstanding protection against
mechanical influences, and as a result scratches do not impair
the resistance to corrosion. The appearance of the finish is
equally outstanding: the thickness of the coating is even over
the whole of the surface and it is free from bubbles and runs.
Unique complete protection against corrosion
During the cataphoretic electro dip-coating process the
pigments in the KTL paint (positive pole) are deposited on the
electrically charged components or assemblies (negative pole)
in an even layer across the whole surface.
Even geometrically complicated structures and cavities are
coated over their whole surface area.
The whole process is automatic and computer controlled, and
can be reproduced at any time.
Can be overpainted with ecologically friendly finishing
coats
Additional finishing coats are unnecessary, but the
manufacturer can accommodate individual requirements in
terms of colour and gloss, without any special preparation, by
covering the KTL coating with standard paint finishes, including
low-solvent and environmentally friendly systems.

The BPW AB 20-1/G offset coupling cross-member has EC
approval (EC no. e4*94/20*1867*01) for a noseweight (N) in
each case of 1000 kg and 2000 kg. This design permits a
steering lock of approx 90°.
The BPW AB 20-1/G coupling cross-member is intended
for external fitting to the towing vehicle. This design enables
overall heights of up to 350 mm, which can be combined
with any internal width (IW) between 758 and 916 mm.

The permissible V-value of the AB 20-1/G coupling crossmember
depends on dimension CC. The hole pattern for
fitting trailer couplings, according to DIN 74051/74052, can
be 120 x 55 mm / 140 x 80 mm or 160 x 100 mm.
When you have determined the trailer couplings used, you
can then find the maximum permissible V-value for the AB
20-1/G coupling cross-member, in combination with the
commonest trailer couplings, from the table above.

The AB 20-1/G coupling cross-member is prepared for the
fitting on both sides of BPW remote cable operation (BPW
no. 51.98.11.0013). Alternatively, BPW also supplies a
mechanical remote operating system (BPW 51.98.11.0012),
which can be bolted on.

the vehicle chassis by means of bolts, as in the fitting

BPW AB 20-1/L coupling cross-member,
with EC approval

The BPW AB 20-1/L straight coupling cross-member has EC
approval (EC no. e4*94/20*0953*02) for a noseweight 1000 kg
and 2000 kg. This design permits a steering lock of approx 90°.
The BPW AB 20-1/L coupling cross-member is intended for
external fitting to the towing vehicle. This design enables
overall heights of up to 400 mm, which can be combined with
any internal width (IW) between 758 and 906 mm.

or 2500 kg.

BPW’s EC-approved, UFK 100 III folding under-run guard (EC
no. e4*70/221*2000/8*0360*00) with one-sided locking is
primarily designed for use on towing vehicles with drawbars
that are coupled under the vehicle. Other applications include
semi-trailers that are used, for example, for ro-ro operations, or
tipper trucks. It thus satisfies the legal requirements throughout
the EC for towing vehicles with low-coupled drawbars.
The new UFK 100 III under-run guard is available in two
heights, 350 and 500 mm, to accommodate different chassis
heights.

BPW’s ZFL 20 adjustable-length drawbar is fitted with
4 x 400 adjustment operated by a hand lever. If required,
pneumatic adjustment can also be supplied. This can

The most important nominal values for towing devices
according to EC directive 94/20/EC can be calculated
as follows:
The V-value must be determined in the case of vehicle
combinations with centre-axle trailers, and is defined as a
theoretical reference force for the vertical components of the
drawbar force between the towing vehicle and a centre-axle
trailer (unit of measurement – kN).
Maximum permissible V-values are given in each case for
BPW towing devices, such as the coupling cross-member
and the drawbar. The lowest V-value of all the towing devices
used in a vehicle combination is the one that must be
applied.
Mechanical towing devices that transmit noseweight, such as
the drawbar and the coupling cross-member (in the case of
centre-axle trailers), are to be marked with their maximum
permissible Dc-value.
Mechanical towing devices that cannot transfer noseweight,
such as the drawbar A-frame and the coupling crossmember
(in the case of fifth wheel trailers), are to be marked
with their maximum D-value.

Klemmfix 72
The Klemmfix 72 is a height-adjustment device for vertically
tilting drawbars.
When set correctly it is possible to achieve infinitely variable
adjustment of the towing eye extending 300 mm up and down
from the horizontal position (measured at the towing eye). The
drawbar can be set to the required height single-handed,
without the need for any tools or other equipment. A Klemmfix
72 can only be used to a limited extent as a height adjustment
device without the assistance of a height-maintenance device.
For a drawbar weight of over 75 kg, a height-maintenance
device must also be fitted (such as a tension spring with a
turnbuckle, or a compression spring unit), to take part of the
weight of the drawbar (see diagram). For further information,

Tension spring with turnbuckle
The tension spring with turnbuckle can be used directly as a
height-adjustment device. The height is adjusted by turning the
turnbuckle. Depending on the tension spring used, one tension
spring is usually adequate even for heavy drawbars (see
diagram). In combination with the Klemmfix 72, the tension
spring with turnbuckle can also be used as a heightmaintenance
device.

Compression spring unit
The compression spring unit is to be used solely as a
height maintenance device, in support of the Klemmfix 72.
The combination of the compression spring unit and the
Klemmfix 72 enables optimal height adjustment. Use of the
compression spring unit on its own for height adjustment
is not permitted.
