Days Out By Bus in Angus
Angus, Tayside and the surrounding areas have always been
popular destinations for the tourist and traveller, with some of
the best examples of the oldest history, the most beautiful
scenery, and the most fascinating heritage in the UK. Take in
the historic towns, seaside villages and rural settlements, and
find out about the vastly different heritages of each area, from
the Picts to rural land workers, from fishing to the textile
industry. Castles, country parks, lochs, rivers, harbours and
museums are just some of the attractions this region has to
offer.
This booklet is designed to show a selection of the places you
can easily visit in one day using buses or trains. These are
listed alphabetically and for each destination a selection of
public transport times are given from each of the Angus towns,
further information can be obtained by phoning any of the
numbers at the back of this booklet or visiting local Tourist
Information Offices. Service numbers and timetable leaflet
numbers are shown for journeys. These timetable leaflets are
available from ACCESS Offices, local libraries, tourist
information centres and council offices or by contacting Angus
Council Transport Team. Whilst fares and times shown are
current at the time of publication it is advised that information
is checked with the operator before travelling.

1 ABERDEEN
The majority of the ‘Granite City’ lies between the Rivers Don
(to the North) and Dee (to the South). The city centre has
excellent shopping facilities, but this is blended with impressive
architecture and historical districts. There are several
museums, kirks and art galleries to visit around the city centre,
but don’t forget to explore some of the other outlying areas,
such as the Harbour, the West end, old Aberdeen, and the
beach front and esplanade.

2 ALYTH
Alyth is a town with an ancient history, and local legend has it
that Pictish King Mordred held Queen Guinevere captive at
nearby Barry Hill. However the origins of Alyth can be dated
back to the 11 th century when a church, whose remains can still
be seen in the current churchyard, was built. Evidence of the
old town can still be seen including the packhorse bridge that,
on foot, takes you across Alyth Burn. Follow the burn to Den of
Alyth, a small deep-set rocky glen, with trees said to be
descended from the original deciduous woodland of lowland
Scotland. Providing habitat for woodland birds and red
squirrels, this interesting walk also passes a working sawmill,
showing Alyth’s more recent industrial past, the history of which
can be seen in Alyth museum.

3 ARBROATH
The origins of Arbroath can be dated back to Pictish times;
however it was the drafting of the Declaration of Arbroath at the
Abbey in 1320, which put Arbroath on the historical map.
Arbroath Abbey is over 800 years old, the distinctive ‘Round O’
window being the focal point of the remaining site. The Abbey
has a visitor centre where other surviving remains such as the
gatehouse and the Abbot’s House can be seen from the
viewing gallery. The Abbey is within easy reach of the town
centre for shopping or a bite to eat.
Arbroath Harbour was founded in 1394 at a site with the
worrying name of ‘Danger Point’; however this did not hinder
Arbroath’s reputation as an important trading and fishing port.
Within the vicinity of the harbour traditional fishmongers and
smokehouses sell the local delicacy the Arbroath ‘Smokie’;
where pairs of haddock tied at the tail, are smoked in large
barrels over hardwood chips giving a distinctive taste.
In July the Arbroath Seafront Spectacular provides a family day
out, with aerial displays from the Royal Air Force and visiting
guest pilots (past years have included a preserved Hawker
Hunter bomber and the Team Guinot wingwalkers).
In August the SeaFest, celebrates the local marine heritage and
history of the sea. Regular features of the festival are
traditionally-smoked fish (i.e. 'Smokies'), boat-dressing
competitions, fishing displays, modern and traditional music
shows, competitions, and many other stalls, exhibitions, shows
and displays.
Just minutes from the harbour is the Signal Tower Museum,
which began life as the shore station for the Bell Rock
Lighthouse (both built by Robert Stevenson). With free entry,
you can find out about the fascinating history of the feat

of engineering that is the Bell Rock lighthouse and the Signal
Tower itself, visit the outhouse to see the massive lens of the
last manually operated lamp and hear the keeper talk about his
day. In addition the museum displays reflect the past lives of
the keepers’ families and the wider community of Arbroath and
district. Other displays tell the story of Arbroath’s fishing
heritage and of its great Industries of textiles and engineering.

4 AUCHMITHIE
Once popular with smugglers who made use of local caves in
the red sandstone cliffs this picturesque village is now popular
with those who enjoy the pastime of fishing. Auchmithie was
used by Sir Walter Scott as the inspiration for the village
‘Musselcrag’ in his novel ‘The Antiquary’. There is a moderately
steep walk down to the tiny harbour, where the area’s fishing
industry originated before migrating down the coast to Arbroath,
and where Creel fishing is still practiced. Smokies and the fish
smoking industry also originated here, but soon followed the
fishermen to Arbroath.

5 BARRY
Barry Mill is an excellent example of the industrial heritage in
Angus. Barry village provides a tranquil backdrop for the 19 th
century water mill, one of the last water powered meal mills to
work in Angus - the mill produced oatmeal until the late 1970s.
The mill building has been conserved, and its machinery has
been restored to working order. Pre-booking is advised
(National Trust for Scotland, telephone 0844 493 2140 or
email barrymill@nts.org.uk). Buses serve Barry village only,
Barry Mill is approximately ½ mile north of the village.

6 BLAIRGOWRIE
Blairgowrie and its sister town, Rattray, sit either side of the
River Ericht, a major tributary of the River Tay. The woodland
walk along the banks of the Ericht leads you to Cargill’s Leap, a
narrow waterfall flowing through a dramatic gorge. Also along
the riverside you will find Keathbank Mill, a huge old jute mill
which has a steam turbine driven by the largest waterwheel in
Scotland. Other interesting riverside attractions include the
Cargill visitor centre, which is a renovated corn mill, an antiques
warehouse, a picture gallery and bistro.

7 BRECHIN & PICTAVIA
Brechin is one of the oldest communities in Scotland, and is
traditionally an ancient market town, with significant Pictish
origins. The ancient history of the Pictish tribes is told at
Pictavia, a local museum that delves into Scotland’s Celtic past,
situated at the Brechin Castle Centre Country Park and garden
centre.
An 11 th century Round Tower, one of only two surviving on the
Scottish mainland can be visited at the Cathedral, which is in
itself famous for it’s stained glass windows. The restoration of
the Cathedral dates back to 1900, and many 20 th century
artists, including William Morris and Edward Burne Jones
contributed their talents to the beautiful stained glass. The
Church is open every day between 9am and 5pm in the
summer months.
On Sundays there is the opportunity to travel back in time on
the Caledonian Railway Company’s steam train. Important for
the thriving textile industry in the 19 th century the railway was
closed in 1981 after 130 years of service, however after
extensive restoration the 4-mile section to Dun was reopened in
1992.

8 BROUGHTY FERRY
The former fishing village of Broughty Ferry is home to a 15 th
century castle, now a museum revealing the town’s ties to local
textile, fishing and whaling industries. The town centre has an

9 CARNOUSTIE
Once promoted as the ‘Brighton of the North’, Carnoustie is one
of the youngest Angus burghs at just over 200 years old. The
town is renowned for golf, and of the three courses here, the
Championship Course is said to be one of the most challenging
in Scotland. Carnoustie first hosted the Open in 1931, and
champions crowned there include Tommy Armour, Henry
Cotton, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tom Watson, before Paul
Lawrie and Padraig Harrington won the title after play-offs in
1999 and 2007.
Carnoustie also offers a wide range of other sports such as
sailing, windsurfing, fishing, horse riding, quad-biking and
tennis, plus the local leisure centre provides a variety of indoor
sports. Throughout the summer there are family events and
entertainment including Carnoustie Gala Day. There is also
range of shops, cafes, restaurants, parks and recreation areas
throughout the town. The beach is fine sand and a walk towards
Westhaven offers a look at some interesting wildlife amongst
the rock pools.

10 DUNDEE
Proud of its history and heritage, Dundee is home to many
museums and exhibitions. The McManus Art Gallery and
Museum is easily accessible in the City Centre; Verdant Works
is a 19 th century jute mill recording the history of the textile
element of the famous ‘jute, jam and journalism’; and Discovery
Point, on the waterfront, houses an exhibition, relating to their
biggest exhibit, Captain Scott’s research ship RRS Discovery,
docked alongside. Sensation Science Centre is a must for kids,
taking them into an interactive world of the human senses, or
you can put your eye to the telescope if you visit the Mills
Observatory in Balgay Park.
The Dundee Rep Theatre and Dundee Contemporary Arts are
within walking distance of the city centre. Regular musical
events are hosted in local venues; including the Blues Bonanza
held in July, which involves the whole city centre. The Food
and Flower Festival is held in September at Camperdown Park.

12 FORFAR
The Royal Burgh of Forfar has an interesting history including
royalty, Picts, linen manufacture and witches. ‘The Forfar Story’
can be seen at the Meffan museum, where a full history is told
through lively exhibitions starting with Forfar’s Pictish origins
and journeying through the Forfar witch-hunts, to more
industrialised times. There are also regular contemporary art
exhibitions.
You can’t visit Forfar without trying a traditional Forfar Bridie, a
half moon shaped meat-filled pasty, best ‘walked off’ with a
wander round the banks of Forfar Loch, where a whole host of
wildlife can be seen along the parkland trails.

13 GLAMIS
Glamis Castle
Currently home to the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorn, Glamis
Castle is most well known as the childhood home of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the legendary
setting for the Shakespeare play ‘Macbeth’. Guided tours with
an informative and experienced guide start every 10-15 minutes
in order to see the many state rooms that are open to the
public, and learn all about the history and heritage of what is
considered to be the most haunted castle in Scotland. Visit the
exhibitions or take a walk in the parkland, the Italian Garden, or
along the nature trail. Shops and restaurants available, as well
as a picnic area and children’s play park.
The castle hosts the Scottish Transport Extravaganza and a
Grand Scottish Prom in July as well as Scotland’s Countryside
Festival in September.

Glamis Village
The village is home to the Angus Folk Museum, which gives the
visitor an insight into the rural life of Scottish land workers over
the last 200 years. The Life of the Land exhibition shows
reconstructions of a farm courtyard, a bothy, a smiddy

and stables, and displays the social history of the area from the
cradle to the grave. Open weekends and Bank Holidays from
31 March to 31 October and daily in July and August. Also pay
a visit to St Fergus Church, the site of an ancient Pictish stone
said to date from around the 8 th century.

14 GLEN CLOVA
Some of the most unspoilt areas in Scotland; the Angus Glens
are rich in wildlife and traditional heritage. Glen Clova has
cliffs, heather covered slopes and beautiful valley meadows.
Wildlife is abundant here and so are the visitors as Clova is one
of the more popular Glens especially for summer visits.

15 HOUSE OF DUN
This beautiful Georgian house, overlooking Montrose Basin,
was built in 1730 by William Adam. The public rooms house
elaborate plasterwork, a particular and memorable feature; and
there are many examples of tapestry, embroidery and scale
modelling to be seen.
Outside, enjoy the attractive walled garden and woodland
walks. Within the grounds the courtyard has undergone
extensive repairs and re-decoration to restore it to its former
glory. The biggest change has to be the introduction of the
Hutchison collection of Scottish colourists and the Stirling
collection of furniture, ranging from the 18th century to the
1960s.

16 KIRRIEMUIR
J.M. Barrie was born and lived in ‘Kirrie’, and the town has also
become his final resting place. Barrie’s presence in the town is
notable with several attractions bearing his name: there is a
bronze statue of Peter Pan in the Square, his former home has
been transformed into a museum dedicated to his life, and the
Camera Obscura on the Hill of Kirriemuir was donated by Barrie
to the people of Kirriemuir.
Other notable Kirriemuir residents such as Sir Hugh Munro, the
grandfather of hill walking (a Munro is a mountain over 3000ft)
and Bon Scott, the late lead singer with rock band AC/DC, are
celebrated at the Gateway to the Glens Museum. This red
sandstone museum, housed in the Old Town House, also
covers the wildlife, geology, history, archaeology, heritage and
geography of the area. If you like a bit of folk music, an annual
festival of traditional music and song is held in September.

A former reservoir, Monikie Country Park is now an important
area for water birds, wildfowl, waders and other wildlife. As well
as being a notable wildlife habitat the park is a popular site for
recreation and education: the Ranger Services runs a varied
programme of watersports, orienteering, lochside walks, an
adventure playground and special events for children. Monikie
is a popular site for summer picnics and barbeques, with other
refreshments and snacks available from the Pavilion or the
Byzantium Café Restaurant, both open for periods throughout
the summer.
Passengers should note that from Mondays to Saturdays buses
pick up/drop off at South Gate and on Sundays buses serve the
Country Park car park

18 MONTROSE
Montrose is built on a spit of land, which separates a large tidal
basin from the North Sea. Montrose Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
has a visitor centre where you can observe the migratory
wading birds and wildfowl. With its position on a natural
harbour, Montrose has a long maritime heritage, once an
important port for fishing, and the importing and exporting of
wool and timber.

To the north east of the town is the site of the first operational
military airfield in Britain. Now the Montrose Air Station Heritage
Centre, the Royal Flying Corps set up their military base here,
where you can see the local history of military aviation through
wartime artefacts and military aircraft and vehicles. The
refurbished Montrose Museum and Art Gallery dates from 1842
and has some unusual exhibits, and close by the William Lamb
Memorial Studio is dedicated to the work of the local artist who
taught himself to sculpt and draw with his left hand after
suffering a war wound to his right hand.

19 STONEHAVEN
Stonehaven’s picturesque harbour is home to the Tolbooth –
the town’s oldest building. The old town surrounds the harbour
and leads up to the old High Street with its period town houses
and civic buildings. The town is also home to a well-respected
folk festival in mid July, which attracts many visitors.
Stonehaven is locally renowned for its Art Deco open-air
swimming pool – a popular place on warm sunny days and on
Wednesday evenings for midnight swims.
