abbey by the family of the Roches, in the beginning of
the twelfth century, in 1796', when the late John
Anderson became its possessor, by purchase, it con-
sisted of only a few mud cabins and the ruins of the
old abbey; but in a few years, by the exertions of its
enterprising and spirited owner, it became not only one
ot the prettiest inland towns in Ireland, but, during his
proprietorship, one of considerable manufacture—and
industry, comfort and respectability was soon apparent.
In consequence of the unfortunate failure of Anderson's
bank, the place subsequently became the property
of Sir Robert Abercromby, Bart,, who is highly
respected as a landlord, albeit, it is to be regretted, a

Dtmtovp. FERMOY &c; Jtttmster.
non-resident. The improvements in the town, however,
progress satisfactorily under the intelligent superintendence
of Sir Robert's agent, Matthias C. Hendley,
Esq. Several handsome houses have been recently
built—two in the Elizabethan style of architecture, in
Abercromby-place, are really elegant; and near the
same site Ftederick Bell, Esq. has erected a beautiful
residence. The site, too, of the extensive brewery ( f
Messrs. Perrott and Co. has, by the happy means of the
total abstinence movement, been appropriated to the
erection of sober and comfortable dwellings, shops, and
warehouses. The bridge of seventeen arches, connecting
the northern and southern portions of the town,
is a noble structure. The staple trade of Fermoy is in
com aud butter, of which considerable quantities' are
sent off. There are three flour mills. The National
Bank of Ireland and the Provincial Bank have branches
here, and there is a savings' bank aud a loan fund. The
government or the town is confided chiefly to the
county and resident magistracy. General se sions of
the peace are held twice a year, and petty sessions once
a fortnight, in the court house, a well arranged building,
at the east end of the town. The barracks are
remarkably commodious ; a portion of the new barrack
has been converted into a workhouse.
There are four edifices for public worship, namely,
the chuich of the establishment, erected in 1802 ; the
Roman Catholic chapel in 1811 ; the Methodist chapel
in 1820, and that for Presbyterians in 1837. The
church ii rather an elegant structure, with a square
tower, formerly surmounted by a spire, which, becoming
insecure, was taken down some years since, but is
about to be replaced by subscription. The late Mr. An
dersoti gave the site for this church, and nearly £3,000
towards its erection. The Roman Catholic chapel is
likewi>e a handsome building, lately enlarged and embellished.
The Methodist and Piesbvterian chanels
are small but neat buildings. The late Rev. Dr. Wm.
Adair endowed a school for teaching the useful
branches of education ; the present master has ably
conducted this establishment for more than twenty
years; there is also a school for females attached,
juperinteuded by the ladies of the town. There are
lational and infants schools and several private academies.
A convent for nuns of the order of Presenta-
tion has been built in a handsome style, on the brow
of a hill, to the south of the town, consisting of a
centre and two wings ; in one of the latter is a chapel,
in the other a school-house for girls, who are carefully
and gratuitously instructed by the ladies of the establishment.
The environs of Fermoy abound with charming
scenery, and numerous villas and mansions of the
opulent. The market is held on aturday. Fairs
June 21st, Augu>t 20th, and November 7th. The
populatinu of the parish, in 1851, 6,750, aud the town
5,844 of that number.
BALLYHOOLY, a neat, well-built village, in the same
parish of its name, on the left bank of the Blackwater,
four miles N W. of Fermoy, and on the main road from
that town to Mallow, joining the domain of the Earl
of Listowel, to whom the village belongs. The parish
church, the remains of a former one. and the ruins of
an ancient castle of the Roches, crown the summit of
a rock immediately over the river, and across which
was a handsome cut-stone bridge, with several arches,
but it was entirely canied away, like many others in
this couuty, by the flood which occurred on the night
of the 3rd of November, 1853. In the village is a
Roman Catholic chapel, a national school, a dispensary,
and pidice barracks. Population in 1851 was
1,520, aud of the village 419 of that number.
CLONDULANE, a parish, partly in the barony of Fermoy,
but chiefly in that of Clotidons and Clongibbons,
contains a parish church, which is a small neat buildiug,
situated between two and three miles from Fermoy.
At GLENDULLANE are extensive flour mills, built by
the late Karl of Monntcashel. Population of the parish
in 1851, 986.
LITTER, or Castlehyde parish, which lies contiguous
to that of Fermoy, is intersected by the Blackwater
river, by which it is divided info two nearly equal
parts. The principal seat is Castlehyde, beautifully
situated on the northern banks of the Blackwater, in
the midst of a highly picturesque and richly-wooded
demesne, extending on both sides of the river ; and
within its precincts are the ivied ruins of the ancient
castle, which, at a former period, gave to the parish
its name. The church of the parish is a small but neat
building. The population of the parish in 1851,1,071.
