103 All gases were taken directly from the commercially available high pressure cylinders. The stated concentration of impurities in the helium tanks was 50 ppm, with N2 being the major contaminant. Interpretation of Data We assume that an excitTd heliyp) species X* reacts with N or O2 to give the electronically excited N or O2 , and the Latter immediately decays by emitting a quantum of light,2as indicated by reactions (1) and (2) 8 +* X + N2 - N2 + x Na* - N+ + hv (2) 2 At this point the id ntity of X remains unspecified.
