I already knew the Hogg arms well as I had painted versions of them for Lincoln's Inn, where all three Viscounts, including the current one, and his sister Dame Mary, have been Benchers. Because of this it was agreed that the gift should be painted as if it were a panel from the walls of Lincoln's Inn's Great Hall. The client told me he remembered his friend talking as a boy about his maternal grandfather, Richard Martin's arms. I could find no published record of these so the client decided to approach the College of Arms to make sure one way or the other. He was told that Ulster Pedigrees 2. 238 in the College records listed the arms in question and that they had been confirmed in 1907. As Richard's daughter was an only child the herald told my client that the current generation of Hoggs were entitled to quarter their mother's arms. This was a fact quite unknown to them and was kept secret until the arms were presented. The Martin arms are azure a cross Calvary argent the dexter arm terminating in a sun in splendour the sinister in a decrescent both or. Remarkably both Hogg tinctures were repeated as well as one of the charges, NEW ARCHBISHOP of MALTA by Rev Geoffrey Attard After the thirty year episcopate of Gozitan born Archbishop Mgr. Joseph Mercieca, the archdiocese of Malta has passed into the hands of Dominican friar Mgr. Pawlu Cremona OP. Mgr. Cremona was ordained at Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, once the conventual church of the Knights of Malta on the island, on the 26th of January 2007. The new coat of arms for the newly ordained archbishop comprises a shield party per pale for his family arms and a chief representing the Dominican Order, a black cape on a white habit. To the dexter the arms featuring three flowers with four petals each represents the Archbishop’s paternal surname ‘Cremona’ while the sinister bearing the image of a dolphin is a reflection of his mother’s surname ‘Cauchi’. The rank of archbishop is denoted by the Pallium bearing black crosses (granted to new archbishops every year on the feast of St Peter and St Paul on the 29th June) and the green Galero (ecclesiastical hat with ten tassels representing the grade of archbishop). The Maltese motto of Archbishop Cremona is ‘Hejju t-triq ghall-Mulej’ which in English is translated as ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’. making for a visually perfect quartering of the arms. I chose to lighten the blue I used for the shield and crest in an attempt to give them emphasis over the blue of the mantling. This is less effective in the photo than it was on the painting and was never meant to be as dramatic a difference as bleu celeste. The shield is the only departure from a Lincoln's Inn panel, which all have variations of heaters. The quarters fitted nicely into this shape, whereas a true heater squashed the lower quarters unacceptably. The mantling is the modern version, developed from that used for the Inn in the 1960s by their artist at the time, Frank Newsom Berry. James Hogg not only ended up with an unexpected painting of his arms for Christmas but equally unexpected proof that he and his family were entitled to quartered arms. In this generation James may be the only one to use them though, as his brother and sister have decided to remain with the unquartered arms they have used all their lives. This is an irony readers may appreciate as there are many modern armorists who would do anything to add quarters to their own shields. Visit the website at www.theheraldrysociety.com
an heraldic weekend CAMBRIDGE 2008 The Council and the Congress Committee are pleased to confirm that the Society’s next heraldic weekend will take place at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge over the weekend 5th-7th September 2008. The topic of the weekend is to be ‘Knights and Knighthood’. The format of the weekend will be, as usual, with delegates arriving for registration in the late afternoon on the Friday and departing after lunch on the Sunday afternoon. The Congress Committee are presently putting together a full and varied programme of lectures, together with an excursion that should be of interest to all delegates. There will be a formal dinner on the Saturday evening to which members are encouraged as per usual to bring their Table Banners. As with previous weekends there will be an opportunity for delegates, who wish to be nonresidential, to attend on a daily basis. We shall be running throughout the weekend an exhibition of heraldic artwork and for next year we are requesting delegates attending to bring with them items of heraldic interest which they would be happy to exhibit. Please find within this mailing the initial booking form for the event. The Congress Committee looks forward to receiving your bookings, remembering that there is a discount of £10 per delegate if the form and £25.00 deposit is received before 31st December 2007. On receipt of the booking form, delegates will be sent a form requesting them to supply dietary, mobility, car parking and other administrative requirements that will allow all delegates to have an enjoyable weekend. Please note that although there are more than adequate parking spaces on Fitzwilliam’s campus, we will need to know how many delegates intend driving to Cambridge in order to give warning to the college.
