12 search for an indexer We were much obligated to the late Captain Barrie Kent for undertaking the task of indexing the subject matter of “The Heraldry Gazette”. We are now looking for someone to take up the job. If you think you have the right skill (and temperament!) for this important task please drop a note to the Hon.Secretary at the Heraldry Society address or send him an e-mail at honsec_heraldry@excite.co.uk. It will help if you have a complete set of the “Gazette” from the beginning of 2004 to date. institute events The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies is arranging two events which will be of interest to members. The first is on 27th October at the Institute in Canterbury, when a Study Day will be held on the subject of Heraldry for Family Historians. It will start with a general introduction to heraldry and go on to cover marshalling and cadency, and how to identify an armigerous family. The second is a conference in collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University College at the College over the weekend of 7th - 9th December, entitled “Cathedrals, Communities and Conflict, 1000-1350”. This will include matters of chivalry and heraldry in the period. Further details can be obtained from Dr Charles Insley, Dept of History and American Studies, Canterbury Christ Church University, North Holmes Road, Canterbury CT1 1QU or by e-mail charles.insley@canterbury.ac.uk or telephone 01227- 454700. photographic competition The 2007 Photographic Competition was announced in the March issue of the “Gazette" and an entry form was included with the June issue. Please remember that the closing date is 30th October. The judging panel hopes that there will be a good number of interesting and amusing entries, so please do your best! HIGH SHERIFF of LANCASHIRE by Alan Fennely On Friday 25 May 2007, the High Sheriff of Lancashire, Mrs Ruth Winterbottom, presented her shield to Mr Gordon Johnson DL, the Constable of Lancaster Castle, prior to hanging it in the Shire Hall, alongside the shields of previous High Sheriffs. Mrs Winterbottom’s shield of arms with its border checky reflects her distinguished career spanning 30 years with the Lancashire Constabulary. It is placed in pretence over the arms of her husband Mr Max Winterbottom, who is a former Chief Executive of Lancashire County Council and Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire. This year’s event was attended by the Hon Mr Justice Patten, Vice-Chancellor of the County Palatine of Lancaster, and Mr Thomas Woodcock, LVO DL, Norroy and Ulster King of Arms. Items for inclusion in the Gazette: post to the Editor, The Heraldry Gazette, at the address given on page 15 or by e-mail to heraldry.gazette@mac.com

e afraid . . . Members of the cast of ‘Orvin’, (featured in the last issue of the Gazette). Are they presenting a show of force to point out to the editor that St Mary’s School is in MELROSE and not MONTROSE? The editor is suitably shamefaced and apologetic.
