combat comm<strong>and</strong> mission <strong>and</strong> control by the squadron is impractical.<br />

b. Infantry Division. The troop may be attached to the brigade,<br />

a battle group, or the armor battalion to perform reconnaissance<br />

<strong>and</strong> security <strong>and</strong> when control by the squadron would be impractical.<br />

c. <strong>Armored</strong> <strong>Cavalry</strong> Regiment. The troop may be attached to<br />

another squadron of the regiment to augment its reconnaissance<br />

<strong>and</strong> security capabilities.<br />

Section V. EMPLOYMENT OF SHORT RANGE GROUND RADAR<br />

153. General<br />

a. In the armored cavalry troop, the short range ground radar<br />

will usually operate under control of the armored cavalry platoon<br />

best suited to perform the mission in which the device is required.<br />

It is usually operated by trained personnel assigned to that armored<br />

cavalry platoon. <strong>FM</strong> <strong>17</strong>-1 contains additional information on the<br />

short range ground radar.<br />

b. For security, the radar should be located normally within or<br />

near the position of the platoon with which it is working. In the<br />

event that the mission or terrain conditions dem<strong>and</strong> a location for<br />

the radar that is not near the platoon, it may be necessary to<br />

assign scouts or riflemen the mission of providing for its security.<br />

c. Positioning of the radar is based on an analysis of the mission<br />

<strong>and</strong> capabilities of the set. Its location <strong>and</strong> employment should be<br />

coordinated with other ground radar equipment in the squadron<br />

in accordance with the squadron surveillance plan.<br />

154. Missions<br />

The missions assigned to the short range ground radar derive<br />

from the troop surveillance requirements. It is used to monitor,<br />

scan, or search a specified area. The specific mission assigned<br />

should include the type of radar surveillance to be conducted, an'<br />

irregular operating schedule, duration of mission, area to be<br />

covered, <strong>and</strong> reporting of information.<br />

155. Employment<br />

a. The primary requirement for effective employment of the<br />

radar is that it be situated for line-of-sight operation. It must<br />

be oriented in azimuth <strong>and</strong> located on the map to enable the<br />

operator to accurately locate targets on the ground.<br />

b. In defensive <strong>and</strong> retrograde operations, the short range ground<br />

radar may be used to monitor the main enemy avenue of approach<br />

<strong>and</strong> to scan critical areas <strong>and</strong> gaps between strongpoints. It is<br />
