b. In defensive <strong>and</strong> retrograde operations, the medium range<br />

ground radar may be used to monitor the main enemy avenue of<br />

approach <strong>and</strong> to scan critical areas or gaps between strongpoints.<br />

It is most effectively used during periods of limited visibility to<br />

augment other battalion security measures.<br />

c. In offensive operations, the radar may be used to assist in<br />

providing flank security or to scan beyond the line of contact. It<br />

should be positioned well forward during the attack to allow scanning<br />

of the objective prior to <strong>and</strong> during the assault. Once the<br />

objective is reached, the radar may be used to maintain surveillance<br />

on likely enemy avenues of approach <strong>and</strong> thus provide early<br />

warning of a counterattack.<br />

d. <strong>FM</strong> <strong>17</strong>-1 contains additional information on the employment<br />

of the medium range ground radar.<br />

Section VI. SCOUT PLATOON, RECONNAISSANCE MISSIONS<br />

33. General<br />

a. For a general discussion of reconnaissance missions see chapter<br />

14.<br />

b. In executing reconnaissance missions, the scout platoon obtains<br />

information by stealth, infiltration, <strong>and</strong> observation. When<br />

employed on a reconnaissance mission as part of a larger force,<br />

the scout platoon often executes its assigned mission while being<br />

overwatched <strong>and</strong> supported by other elements of the force.<br />

c. The method by which the platoon performs its mission is determined<br />

by the mission, enemy situation, terrain <strong>and</strong> weather,<br />

<strong>and</strong> specific instructions received from the battalion or other appropriate<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er. The type of reconnaissance <strong>and</strong> the specific<br />

information desired also affect the method employed.<br />

d. The medium range ground radar set may frequently be employed<br />

by the platoon during reconnaissance missions.<br />

34. Route Reconnaissance<br />

a. General. The scout platoon is particularly well suited to perform<br />

route reconnaissance missions for the parent battalion. It<br />

may perform reconnaissance on one or more routes simultaneously.<br />

b. Type of Information. All information obtained during the<br />

conduct of a route reconnaissance should be reported regardless<br />

of its apparent value.<br />
