EXAMPLE NO. 2. ARMORED CAVALRY TROOP<br />

OPERATION ORDER-RETROGRADE (ORAL)<br />

Note. The following order of the <strong>Troop</strong> Comm<strong>and</strong>er, <strong>Troop</strong> B, is issued to<br />

all subordinate leaders, including the artillery forward observer. Time permitting,<br />

it should be issued from a vantage point overlooking the troop sector.<br />

Paragraph numbers <strong>and</strong> letters are usually omitted when the order is issued<br />

orally. The troop comm<strong>and</strong>er refers to the terrain as he issues the order.<br />

1. SITUATION.<br />

a. Enemy forces. Elements of the 201st Fusilier Mechanized<br />

Rifle Regiment, 4th Fusilier Mechanized Division, oppose us. They<br />

currently occupy that ridge (point).<br />

b. Friendly forces. 1st Battle Group, 1st Infantry, withdraws at<br />

2100 hours tonight to a new defensive position west of the STREU<br />

River. 1st Reconnaissance <strong>Squadron</strong>, 31st <strong>Cavalry</strong>, covers the<br />

withdrawal of the 1st Battle Group, 1st Infantry, employing <strong>Troop</strong>s<br />

A <strong>and</strong> B abreast, <strong>Troop</strong> A on the north (left). <strong>Troop</strong> C will be<br />

the squadron security force initially <strong>and</strong> will occupy positions<br />

presently held by the 1st Battle Group, 1st Infantry, then, upon<br />

withdrawal through first delaying position, will revert to squadron<br />

reserve. 1st Howitzer Battalion, 111th Artillery, is in direct support<br />

of the squadron. This shows planned fires (points to squadron<br />

fire support plan overlay). Elements of Ninth Tactical Air Force<br />

support this operation.<br />

c. Attachments <strong>and</strong> detachments. None.<br />

2. MISSION.<br />

This troop organizes initial delaying positions along this ridge<br />

(points) by 2000 hours tonight; covers the withdrawal of Companies<br />

B <strong>and</strong> C, 1st Battle Group, 1st Infantry; then conducts<br />

delaying action in zone.<br />

3. EXECUTION.<br />

a. Concept of operation. This operation will be in two phases:<br />

first, to organize <strong>and</strong> occupy initial delaying positions to cover<br />

withdrawal of Companies B <strong>and</strong> C, 1st Battle Group, 1st Infantry;<br />

then to conduct delaying action in zone. Fire support is provided<br />

by 1/111 Artillery.<br />

b. 1st <strong>Platoon</strong>. Organize position there (points).<br />

c. 2nd <strong>Platoon</strong>. Organize position here (points).<br />
