i. Keep informed of the progress in preparation of the next<br />

delaying position.<br />

j. Maintain communication with all elements.<br />

k. Control the fires of all elements.<br />

1. Direct the withdrawal of elements from the delaying position;<br />

accompany the last elements to withdraw.<br />

m. Upon arrival at the next delaying position, check organization<br />

of the position, make necessary adjustments, <strong>and</strong> repeat the<br />

same procedure followed at the initial delaying position.<br />

n. Keep higher headquarters continuously informed of the<br />

situation.<br />

8. RECONNAISSANCE<br />

a. Obtain mission, including what, where, <strong>and</strong> when.<br />

b. Make detailed study of maps covering area of operations.<br />

c. Make estimate of situation; formulate plan.<br />

d. Assemble subordinates; issue order.<br />

e. Receive subordinate unit reports on readiness to move.<br />

f. Keep comm<strong>and</strong> group centrally located in unit formation.<br />

g. Personally move to most critical point in area of operations,<br />

if the situation warrants.<br />

h. Keep continuously informed of developments in the situation.<br />

i. Make rapid decisions based on a continuous estimate of the<br />

situation.<br />

j. Maintain the flow of information to higher headquarters.<br />

9. FLANK GUARD<br />

a. Study map of area involved for likely avenues of enemy approach,<br />

key points of observation, good routes, alternate routes,<br />

<strong>and</strong> distances.<br />

b. Obtain schedule of march for main body. Plan movement to<br />

cover it. Issue orders.<br />

c. Plan for security of flank guard itself.<br />

d. In rolling or rough terrain, occupy comm<strong>and</strong>ing terrain. In<br />

open terrain, march parallel to main body.<br />

e. Keep higher comm<strong>and</strong>er informed of the situation.<br />

f. Delay large hostile forces; destroy or drive off smaller ones.<br />

10. COVERING FORCE (OFFENSE)<br />

a. Study map <strong>and</strong> terrain for likely enemy positions, routes of<br />

advance, possible natural obstacles, key terrain features.<br />

b. Obtain from higher headquarters: axis of advance, frontage,<br />

phase lines, adjacent units, available supporting fires, action de-<br />
