DEFENSIVE OPERATIONS, ARMORED CAVALRY<br />

SQUADRON<br />

318. General<br />

Section I. GENERAL<br />

a. The armored cavalry squadron may be required to conduct defensive<br />

operations in the performance of reconnaissance, security,<br />

or economy of force missions. In conducting defensive operations,<br />

the squadron may employ the techniques of either the mobile or<br />

the position defense, depending on the situation.<br />

b. The squadron may conduct or participate in either a mobile<br />

defense or a position defense as part of a larger force.<br />

c. When operating on a reconnaissance or security mission, the<br />

squadron may be forced to adopt a perimeter defense, in which<br />

case the techniques of both the mobile defense <strong>and</strong> the position defense<br />

are employed.<br />

d. The armored cavalry squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er organizes <strong>and</strong><br />

conducts the defense through application of the following basic<br />

considerations (see <strong>FM</strong> <strong>17</strong>-1 for a discussion):<br />

(1) Proper use of terrain.<br />

(2) Security.<br />

(3) Mutual support.<br />

(4) Defense in depth.<br />

(5) All-round defense.<br />

(6) Fire support plan.<br />

(7) Strengthening of defensive area.<br />

(8) Flexibility.<br />

(9) Maximum use of offensive action.<br />

(10) Maximum dispersion against nuclear attack consistent<br />

with the mission.<br />

319. Employment of <strong>Armored</strong> <strong>Cavalry</strong> <strong>Squadron</strong> in Defensive<br />

Operations<br />

a. The armored cavalry squadron, by reason of its equipment<br />

<strong>and</strong> organization, is best suited for employment on reconnaissance<br />
